A period of unemployment was the ostensible reason why I went back to college (I say "ostensible" because in actual fact I'd been looking for an opportunity to do so, losing my job just provided that opportunity).

I'm banking on the economy getting better between now and graduation in 2012. Interestingly, the Nevada Society of Certified Public Accountants reports that only about twenty new candidates come into the CPA pool in this state per year---everyone else either leaves the state or doesn't have the wherewithal to pass the CPA exam. Job security is very high for highly skilled workers in the Silver State---mostly because nobody in their right mind wants to raise kids here if they can do so somewhere else (50th in education, high drug use, crime, and teen pregnancy rates, and less culture than a cup of yogurt does not attract wealthy people.)

Without wishing to jinx my current situation, I haven't had any problems finding work.

At 17 I had a McJob where I stayed for just over a year. I then singed on to an agency which got me some temp work and I worked at different places for 3 months before being sent to the place I'm at now. 4 years later I'm full time, unskilled of course, have a couple of licenses for Forklifts under my belt. Others were not so lucky, we did have a tightening of the belt towards the end of 2008 and a few guys who'd been there the same length of time as me were let go.

The annoying part is I get no satisfaction from the job, so untill I can get enough money together to do my Class C and C+E I have another job potentially lined up which should be more stimulating. In this case though it is indeed a matter of "it's not what you know, it's who you know".

Absolutely. I have a Bachelor's degree too.

Luckily I can freelance in the meantime. It would be nice to get something a little more permanent.
Freelance? What's your major and what are you freelancing in?
I have a degree in Graphic Design.

Enormous difficulty. I'm in a small town with no demand for my skills (Japanese translation, creative writing, editing and basic computer stuff. I much prefer being on the "production" end, having neither interest in nor patience for the "business" side of business.) Scouring the net for leads on possible jobs, sending out emails and resumes, followup emails, more applications, with nary a response. I substitute taught for a while, which was absolutely hellish and I refuse to ever do it again. If the options were sub again or get thrown out of the house and run over by a bus, I choose the latter without hesitation.

I've been thinking of applying to JET and going to teach English in Japan for a while. Might be the best thing to do until this economic thingy blows over.

I've never been employed. At 23, and no qualifications to my name, given how people with degrees find it tough, I'm not entirely sure how I ever will be, save if by some miracle my writing manages to get published.
Holy shit, that sounds horribly familiar. You're not me, by any chance?

Well, I've managed to get a job for at least the next 3 weeks, so I suppose it's a start. Doing Temp work is a pain though, but at least it's a start.

Yes. A thousand times yes. It's probably because I don't have a car, so my choice of workplace is extremely limited... In fact, it's limited to a place that doesn't hire you unless you're eighteen or older.
Im 19, have a car, and work experience and i still couldn't get a job over the summer. I'm planning on working my ass of in college this year and trying to find an internship. Would beat the job hunt i went through.

I've been pretty lucky.

I landed a job here like 2 years ago, and it's saved for me whenever I come home between University terms.
£220+ per week, which I'm happy with

I've worked every summer for the last 5 or 6 years and never had to make a proper application or attend an interview. I've always just got the jobs through friends/family.

Definitely helps to have connections

Every job wants experience, no job is willing to give me that experience.

I need a job to get a job, it seems.
That was the most frustrating part of job hunting. If I have no experience, no one wants to hire me. I can't get experience if no one hires me. It's a never ending loop!

Then I came across PetSmart and they were finally nice enough to give me a shot. :)
