No, this isn't some flame thread or a blind rant about hating Yatzee or ZP, I love them both.

I have just finished a ZP marathon, starting at the first episode (yes including the youtube ones) and watching every episode until the latest. One thing really stood out, the comment numbers.

For earlier episodes he was averaging around 200 comments on each video, in the middle up in the dizzying heights or around 400 per episode, now it's barely 100.

So what happened, did people get bored of ZP? Did people keep watching but not commenting? Did the people stupid enough to post in the first 8 comments well before they could have possibly watch the video finally run out against the banhammer?

Also once again not a hate thread, nor a petrol dowsed thread ready for the spark that creates the flame war.

I don't really watch it anymore.
I don't hate it or anything, I just don't get the laughs out of it that I used to.
It's kind of predictable.

Everything ultimately grows stale.

Yahtzee's been doing this weekly for years now... It's no surprise the bloom is off the roses.

I remember those early days when the first 4 or 5 comments under every new episode got a warning.

As Colour-Scientist and Casual Shinji said, it's not that it's bad, but it's been going for a while now and you can't keep the joke running forever. The only real surprise comes from games that don't fit his "usual" tastes, as everything else you can more or less guess whether or not he will rip it to pieces or nitpick as he likes it.

I still watch it every week, but more out of habit than anything else.

I think it's still just as good, it's just that there are a lot more similar entertaining things to watch these days. ZP started, what- 4, 5 years ago? 90% of the channels I'm subbed to didn't exist back then.

I still watch it every week, I just don't post because there's only so many variations of "[Insert Joke Here] made me laugh, good show!" you can say.

I find it most amusing when he gets games that are downright broken, or ones that shock everyone by actually impressing him. In his own (paraphrased) words, it's hard to really get emotional about something that's just average.

I think there was a point where everybody realised that Yahtzee doesn't actually look at what they posted. People rarely discussed what they saw, it was always agreeing or disagreeing with him and expecting him to take notice.

I still watch them, but I don't discuss them. But then again, although it is still mildly entertaining, it is no longer new and fresh, so it is bound to lose a bit of it's edge. Also, games these days are so rarely brilliant, or indeed god-awful for that matter, being churned out to a set format as they are, so it must be difficult to find new things to say about them.

I don't even remember the last ZP that actually made me laugh. Mostly, if I do watch it then it's only out of habit. If I'm on the Escapist and it's one of the only new things to be put up then I'll have a look.

ZP used to be the only reason I ever came here at all but now I think Jim has taken over that role for the most part.

Totalbiscuit has kind of replaced Yahtzee for me. Both do the same things, but TB actually shows me the games, and really goes into why he liked/didn't like it. I still watch ZP, but I don't really care anymore.

I have never watched it as a habit.
There probably are some characteristics in the show that make it unappealing to a bigger audience. Focusing on the negatives for the sake of humour makes the show unfit for customer advice. The comedy may have gotten stale because of repeated usage of the same talking points coupled with never-changing delivery style.
Also, the show is not very accessible to non-native English speakers that I know. I don't know how representative they are of those in general, but the probability is that the fast-paced delievery makes the show harder to follow for many who might otherwise watch it.

I'll agree with you on that. ZP got me on this site in the first place but it's the jimquisition I look forward to the most now.

I treat Yahtzee as a source of entertainment journalism more so than the ha-ha factory it used to be. Yahtzee has an act, and when that act is delivered every week it's bound to lose it's flavour.

I still think the man has valid things to say though, and the quality of his writing is good. He's creative, often witty and Jam was a pretty excellent novel.

I still watch Yahtzee every week. I don't think I'm quite as enamoured with him as I was when I was 18 or so. Might have grown out of his humour a little bit; I don't know.

Then again, I listen to podtoid every week. So my sense of humour might have just gone backwards. (Those of you who listen to podtoid will know what I'm talking about.)

He's just such a damned good writer! I tune in when i notice it.
Also hits it head on with most of his observations. There's enough depth to keep it fresh i find.

Just the stuff like the betrayal ship (aliens: colonial marines) having sailed across the world to return with exotic spices and goods gets a good chuckle going.

I suppose another thing is that he gets his points across alot more quicker then the 20-30 minute video's i see. But otherwise it's still entertaining.

Personally not a big fan of the new poetry stuff...feels like an underdeveloped idea.

This topic pops up here every now and then. Nothing's changed: he still gets big numbers and plenty of money, and people keep watching. Oh, and the number of comments is a very poor way of gauging the success of a show: oftentimes people are happy with the show and have nothing to say. I have been like this for the most part with almost every episode.

I realize number of comments isn't the greatest metric, it just seemed an obvious trend is all which I sought to explain be it a loss of popularity, apathy or people not commenting the way they used to.

Just see it as the scientist in me, I've noticed a trend in a data set so I must compulsively seek a reason for that trend.

I've only commented once, and have seen all of the episodes, but lately I don't really bother. The concept is starting to feel pretty old and for the past year or more I often find myself not even listening to the words. Just watching the pretty pictures. Assuming it's because the episodes doesn't make me giggle anymore.

Well personally, I still enjoy it pretty much the same since I first was introduced to it. Most of the time, I'm happy with them and laugh a fair amount, but there's no point on my saying that in the comments each week.
