Have you ever admired another player's gaming skills?

Do you ever admire the skills of other players? The days of the arcades are long gone so gaming is not quite the spectator sport it used to be.

I used to admired people who could play the old arcade game 'Defender' well. It looked incredibly hard to me. And even in my prime of gaming skill I was never that good at it.

I also remember standing in a Japanese arcade a few years back in awe of the 'Virtua Fighter 4' players.

In modern games I'm impressed by people who can play 'Left 4 Dead 2' well. I'm pretty good but there are some people who just never seem to go down at all. Shooting hunters mid-air etc... I'm very impressed.

Do you ever admire other gamer's skills? Or do you only get annoyed by people better than yourself?

I don't think I'd use the word 'admire', but I can appreciate when another person is playing a game well. I only get annoyed by it if they try to rub it in my face or be generally douchey about it.

online, no not really. In person yeah myself and my friend have an epic back and forth stalemate starting from Soul Calibur on dreamcast and up to SCIV on 360. we have a lot of respect for each-other.

Sure. I was invited to join a clan on Halo 3 and was soundly beaten by a "professional gamer." I envied him then and I still do, but I don't really believe in professional gaming.

But we're talking about skill. Spend enough time doing something and you'll get good at it. Simple as that. I admire those who are better than me, seeing as I consider myself low on the totem pole of Halo: Reach skill.

Most of my friends hate me for my hours of online experience. I may be a lousy online player, but put me in a game of players with little or no online experience and I will wreck them.

I think I have more respect for players when we are against each other. Recently the University bar held a tournamnet night, and despite the 30 players for the Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament coming from all areas and not really knowing each other, everyone respected who won and lost, shook hands, smiled and there wasn't any douchery what so ever. (BTW I came in the top 8)

I'm always in awe of professional StarCraft players. How they get that fast is a mystery to me.

Good old StealthAssassin on the xbox. Back when WaW was new me and him (#1 team deathmatch player in the world) had some epic battles. I told myself that if I could beat him no one would be able to stop me. And one day I did and I was happy.

You mean somebody like OMFGNinja?
Pro Spies never cease to amaze me. SubtleArt (aka Lt. Cindi Lauper) was another great one. Sadly he passed away recently.

I can only admire someone's skills if I also admire their personality. Basically they can be the best person in the world, but if they're a douchebag or an idiot, I won't admire or respect their ability one bit

It depends what you mean. I sometimes respect a player's ability to play, but don't really admire them due to the way they act.

A good example is the SC2 player Idra. Really good Zerg player, but has a nasty habit of losing his cool in a big way. (To put this into perspective, when you type "idra" into YouTube, the first suggestion is "idra rage".)

I very rarely respect people I meet online, however, just because when someone's in the winning position it's quite uncommon to receive any courtesy - they normally call you a noob, a scrub or whatever even if they're only winning by a really small amount. That added to the recent air of hostility in all online games leads to a general lack of admiration for players. That's not to say I don't think they're good.

Admiration is a mix of seeing they're a good player and seeing that they're at least a little bit of a nice person. It's difficult to admire someone's skills if you directly dislike the person behind them.

Hmm, no.

Games will always be a source of entertainment to me, and seeing someone who is very skilled in experiencing this entertainment doesn't impress me in the slightest. That's why that whole King of Kong documentary went completely over me head.

Cliff Blezinski whenever he does the live playthroughs. How do the man have the capacity to play the game, talk to the crowd and be so damn awesome? If only I could be as cool as that.

Absolutely. As a fighting game nut, I'm constantly coming across players that I admire the skill of. Some level of admiration, though it's not always openly admitted, is integral to the fighting game scene.

I'm usually in a private party on Xbox Live so I've never actually told someone in the lobby that they're awesome, but me and my friends will acknowledge someone elses playing ability. I played a Left 4 Dead versus game with a guy who could crown witches with the pump-action shotgun, and he didn't even seem to make a big deal out of it.
