Don't worry otaku culture is focused on a very small set of anime, If you watch good stuff then you will find it's shockingly mature (you are already on the right track with the works of satoshi kon, paprika and perfect blue). But there is lots lots more, try:

Ghost in the Shell; start with the movie. Fascinating sci-fi

Basically these are all anime that are just too good for the stupid fan culture to reach, things you want to avoid if you don't want to see that side; long shows like bleach and especially Naruto. "Moe", cutesy girls doing cutesy stuff, much of it is retarded, it takes a while to find the gems in the rough and most of the time it is not worth it.
.
it was the "elevator representing different sections of a persons mind" that stood out to me most

but yeah...thanks for the suggestions! I was going to look into paranoia agent but didt bother to mention (as it is a series, albeit a short-ish one)

Ive been mean to see AKIRA but even that might be a bit much for me

I have a pretty healthy liking for anime. I suppose being purely a dubbed viewer helps me separate myself from Otakus or Weeaboos.

Not that any subbed fan is automatically either of those. I'm just Saying, it helps.
hahah....yeah, I actually prefer subs, mainly personal preference....I don't see why people are so adverse to subs (not just anime) but I guess it can be distracting for some

Definitely.
I like plenty of things with terrible fanbases (Silent Hill is a big one), but I liked that and THEN I found out about the fans. It's a lot harder to get into something when you know PRIOR that a lot of really awful fans are associated with.
For example, Mass Effect.
I know it's probably good, but frankly I don't want to be grouped in with people that try to find a chemical compound for a fictional character's sweat.
I know that not all of the fans are like that, but there are quite a few.
Oh, and I avoid anything that's Homestuck related like the plague thanks to the fans.

I lasted about three seconds into watching that haha. I'm pretty much the same way with a lot of anime, for pretty much the same reason. There's some really [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0464804/] quality [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0594503/] Japanese animation out there, but you wouldn't know it if you were just looking at how the American fanbase responds [http://www.google.com/search?q=anime+room&hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ZAMLUK7iCqfY6wH6372HCg&ved=0CE8QsAQ&biw=1680&bih=63] to it [http://www.justmanga.com/jmcover/NARUTO-HEADBLAC.jpg].
so sad Satoshi Kon is dead :(......

and I'll admit my room can look kind of like that at times (excpet non anime related stuff)

Oh god, I feel like killing myself now. Someone making themselves.. that.. saying "kai" all the time like it MAKES them Japanese.. yeah, you like Japanese culture and anime.. I do too.. but please, don't make yourself a social disgrace.

I feel like crying now.

So, Halo. Honestly, I hate the fanbase. Like all of COD's fans got high on meth and got really rowdy. It's just.. *sigh*

And when I did play the games I hated them.

And Portal, all the cake-jokes. Sometimes they're funny, most of the time, they're not. But, it's the opposite of Halo. I really liked Portal, massively. I liked the fun platforming, the story, and putting turrets into an infinite drop.

I watched this again yesterday (for amusment) and I realised...

thats like me....but with Anime

I'd say I stopped caring about the crazy fans of anything I liked, such as games and anime, when I was about 13. Why should I be turned off of something I enjoy because of a few freaky fans or weirdos?

If I really am interested in something, I will still partake despite it's fans.. however, there are definitely two things that have fanbases which do bother me: Apple and Valve. For Apple, it's the obnoxiously zealous fans who flock to and defend an often inferior and overpriced product line. For Valve, it's the obnoxiously zealous fans who flock to defend often decent but overrated products and will never admit that, if nothing else, actual competition is a good thing.

I use to when it came to WOW, hearing all the lives that game ruined and time completely destroyed. I played once when I was smaller and did not anything about MMOs and PVP I was playing on my friends account and was horribly destroyed by a Orc Hunter and I thought if this how the game was going to be through the entire game. I said F-that! So I never played again until a little while back when. Now that I have much more experience playing MMOs I am having a lot of fun playing as my little Worgen Mage blowing up any little dumb horde members I see. And I love it.

Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith. All of their shit.

I've seen a few, and it's okay. Sometimes even decent. But they've got those rabid, cling-on fans that think they're the Second Coming, to the point that I feel I have to aggressively hate their stuff just to keep balance in the universe.

Kingdom Hearts. The reason I only have the first three games ever made for the series. After the Nobodies and Organization XIII were introduced, 90% of the vocal fandom became raging fangirls that believe "every guy is gay, and het is eww." And draw/write untold amounts of smut and porn about them. Screaming hatred for every character that could possibly get in the way, or DOES get in the way of their OTP.

I love the series, but if I were to play anymore, I'd want to find out more from the fandom. I just can't take that risk.

Yeah I know what you mean some of the those fangirls are out of their mind. I can't seem to find anything about the game that doesn't lead them mention that crap.

I used to ignore MLP because I didn't want to be involved with a show that appeared to have a large adult male fanbase, because I thought it was a little creepy, but then I started thinking about it. First of all, I read TvTropes a lot, so I understand the concept of a vocal minority, and low and behold, in only a few minutes of research, (which is apparently more than some national news programs feel like doing) I discovered the real community, which isn't nearly as bad as you might think. Yeah, there are some crazies, but thats mainly because they have problems accepting the fact that they're watching a show like that, so it sorta fries their brain. Secondly, I decided that, "well there's this huge fanbase for this new show, and nearly everyone in it says they don't like the original MLP series, so clearly something different must be going on here." So I figured I should probably give it a shot. However I still didn't watch it until I happened to wake up really early one day and the first to episodes of the show just so happened to be on TV that morning, and now here I am, a complete fan of the show. Basically I've learned since then to not judge a book by it's cover, OR by it's readers. For instance, just because Adolf Hitler read a certain book, does that mean that the book was bad? if anything that probably means it was really good if someone at his level of power set aside the time to read it. So yeah, I prefer to base my opinions on stuff on my own experience, rather than what people tell me to think, or what I "should" think. For instance, I used to insult games like CoD all the time for being repetitive and have a fanbase consisting of 12-year-olds that yell a lot, but now I usually just try not to comment on it, since I have no actual extended personal experience with the games.

So.
Many.
Ponies.
And they're evil little bastards.

OT: probably anime, I like occasionally watching Full Metal Alchemist/ One Piece(Y'know, the ones that everyone likes), but some of the fans I've spoken to...They scare me.

Thanks for the compliment (I think)
Are you talking about real ponies? Those things are pricks, they shit everywhere and then get ridden on by spoilt brats. I hate them too. But My Little Ponies on the other hand, they're awesome.

I suppose I avoided League of Legends because I heard it had a pretty awful community. If that counts.

I play League of Legends now. I haven't seen anyone that mean though. Maybe I'm just average enough to avoid all the scorn =P.

I love MLP, but I absolutely detest the fanbase culture it created. The simple solution? Avoid the fanbase.

Understandable, but I would just like to say that I don't think the bronies as a whole deserve the rep they get. Of my 12 years on the internet, I legitimately think that's one of the better fandoms I've partaken in. I know someone who used to rail against the MLP fanbase all the time, but about a month or so ago he was forced by a friend watched the show of his own volition and ended up joining the fanbase. Now the guy has gone back on his words because he loves the fan-created content so much. The whole development was rather damn amusing, actually XD

Yes, there are still some very aggravating bronies out there (Just this morning, even, there were a few I wanted to throttle), and the less I say of cloppers the better. Don't understand the latter, and I don't want to understand the latter.
It is a fairly nice fanbase... most of the time. As said I do love the show and a fair amount of the fan-created content, but more often then not the fans will irritate the hell out of me by taking the series a little too seriously for my liking, i.e. the Derpy Fiasco - I've seen some pretty serious shitstorms in my time, but that was quite possibly the biggest shitstorm to ever occur over something small and insignificant.

Also something I've noticed with bronies a fair amount - they derail their own threads all the time. Pony threads will start off fairly nice and calm, but then someone who doesn't like the show will post, resulting in several of the more defensive bronies getting all up in arms and creating multi-page arguments, derailing the thread and often getting it locked. No other fanbase I've experienced has done this* - they tend to just ignore the haters and keep talking about what they love. I reckon if more bronies did that instead of getting their jimmies so damn rustled all the time I'd enjoy pony threads more often...

But, as I said, they are a fairly nice fanbase most of the time, and a fair few of my friends like MLP so I can always go to them for non-shitstorm pony discussion. It's just the angrier, more defensive bronies that get on my nerves.

And no comment on the Cloppers either... some things were never meant to be understood in this world, lest they drive you mad.

[small]*Obvious exception is Star Wars/Star Trek fans - mother-fuckers fight with themselves more often than not.[/small]
I must admit, I'm one of the bronies you're talking about, it's kind of in my nature to get defensive about stuff. But really, it's not like pretty much any other fanbase has those types of people, just look at gamers for gods sake. Roger Ebert says games can never be art and it sparks at least 100 articles arguing against him. If something is said against a certain videogame or games in general someone WILL come to defend it, probably with hate mail and insults.

I am a brony, and I am also put off by how defensive we can be sometimes. Yes, you like a show that was intended for little girls. That's okay, don't get defensive about it! You don't have to justify yourself. It's an awesome show, but it's not for everyone.

As for fanbases that I am not a fan of... I suppose online FPS players on Xbox Live. Simply because that's what people think of when they hear the word "gamer" and unfortunately they have a bad reputation as sexist, foul-mouthed, violence-addicted man children. You know, the opposite of a brony: a creepy, hair-braiding, fabulously gay man child. (sarcasm!)

Homestuck I guess. Everything about it I hate, and the fans I encounter always have avatars from it and talk stupidly. And one friend seems to think I like it even though I told them I don't and oinks me videos about it. Ugh.
