Have you ever bought something because of a commercial?

I haven't had TV for the past 3 years, because I haven't found the need to pay for cable. So lately no. Honestly, I think the only thing I ever bought because of the TV ad was "Now That's What I Call Music: Disc 1" only thing I can really think of. I'm one of those people that I do my research and I buy what I need. Another person's review of something holds more sway then a TV ad for me.

Yes--or, at least, nothing about how advertising works. The purpose of advertising isn't to make you think "wow, I need that! I'm going to run right out and buy it!" (unless you're three years old, maybe, and then you have no money anyway). The purpose, instead, is so that you *remember* the company name when you *do* need the product/service they provide. This makes a big difference, it really does. If no one knows who you are or what you do, you aren't going to sell anything. If, instead, they've seen your logo a dozen times in conjunction with something interesting/amusing/attractive/whatever, then you're at least on their list of alternatives to choose from, which means they're orders of magnitude more likely to buy something from you.

Of course, you can go too far and do things like oversaturate your target audience or spend your advertising money on things that don't elicit much response. There's an entire field (marketing) devoted to analyzing and quantifying just such difficult and ephemeral results. While many of us are weary of advertising because a lot of companies go for a spam approach, we should be happy because it pays for a lot of things we'd otherwise have to pay for out of pocket, like broadcast radio and TV and most internet sites. And, hey, the next time we need a tow or want to order a pizza, we just might find something we like because we remembered an ad we saw.
That makes a lot more sense than what I was thinking, thanks for explaining it. I didn't take any business classes in high school, so I am a bit naive when it comes to that stuff. I guess I can thank advertising for funding things like the Escapist, even if that damn Fire Emblem add keeps popping out.

Hah, yes, I'll be glad when they get rid of that one in the fullness of time. I actually did the little strategy challenges because I was curious, though. :D

They had ads for gourmet chips once. I was curious, so I tracked them down, purchased them, and consumed them.

They're actually the best chips I've ever had in my life.

The Mass Effect commercials caused me to but a 360 and Mass Effect.
The same happened to me with the first Gears commercial with the Mad World song. Buying a 360 was the last thing on my mind before that commercial.

Everyone who says "no" is a lying liar and should be ashamed. Everyone has! From food, shoes, toothpaste, shampoo, medicine and toys, they advertise everything and it gets in your head. Especially for kids. Advertising works, no doubt about it.

Solely because of a commercial? No.

I got Fallout 3, and I had seen adds for that...
I got a lot of garbage when I was younger...

They usually just say "this is here."

Like I saw a commercial for Mirror's Edge...The one where it's like "What you are about to see is actual gameplay footage" and then goes to some guy doing level 1 relatively fluently?

I was like "Holy shit, what's this?" It looked incredibly interesting, and I looked it up, learned about it, got excited about it, and didn't buy it for retail - bought it used off a friend, which didn't really help the company at all.

Does that count?

So I've been thinking lately, companies pay a lot of money to run advertisements on T.V, yet I have very very seldom ever purchased something because I saw it on T.V. I really can't imagine a person who hears an advertisement for Sham-wow and really decides they want to buy that product. So guys, have you ever bought something because you saw a commercial for it? Do you think its a gamble for companies to spend so much money on advertising their products? Am I a complete idiot who knows nothing about how business works?
Haha not quite. I used to think the same way about commercials too until I realized that they're not supposed to work so instantly.

I would guess that very few people see a commercial for the sham-wow and immediately say "I must have one!" or see a commercial for Gears 2 and say "I better go out and buy that right now!". It's not so instant. The idea is to plant a seed and keep it growing in your mind. The first few sham-wow commercials are just to get you to remember it. Then say in a month or so you run through 80 paper towels cleaning up a big mess, the advertisers hope you think "Man if I only had a sham-wow". That way if the commercial comes on ONE MORE TIME, you might actually buy it.

Other things like games or movies are to build hype and again, one commercial means little but the more it's repeating the more you might think about it. After the 5th or 10th Gears 2 commercial I realized that the release date was coming out soon and I found more trailers and even pre-ordered the game.

So looking at a commercial as a single instance tends to be worthless, but when it's repeated they hope you think about it after the commercial is over.

I walked past a creame egg poster while walking into a shop once for some snacks.
Needless to say I didn't know what to buy so I bought a creame egg. Oh well.

Snickers, and that is it.

The feast IS MINE!

YOINKS! And away...

Also, since the recession started, has anyone else noticed the decrease in budgets in these commercials (not Snickers, just commericals in general).
Maybe its all in my head...

Advertising like that is slightly different. It's like the giant Wendys billboard advertising their new sandehich placed directly over the Wendys restaurant. They're hoping to catch the people who think they know what food they want at the moment but aren't really sure. That's meant to be big and flashy for the "swoop-and-snatch" way of attracting customers.

Why do advertisers advertise their own products in their own store? If you're already there to get something, why not it be the thing they want you to have? If you go to Wendys to get only a frech fry and they advertise their super-sandwhich, you might decided that you want that super-sandwhich either alone or with the french fry. Either way, you probably spent more money than you went in there originally intending to spend.

I realize I'm making it sound like Advertisements are evil and over-power people but really it's just to influence people, as no advertisements could actually control anyone

Once I saw an ad here in Argentina for Amargo. Amargo is a type of drink made out of water and lots of different herbs that grow only here and some of the bordering countries like Paraguay or Bolivia. My amargo of choice used to be Terma, but it's so expensive I can't afford it anymore. But then this ad for one called Tacconi came on and I just said: "I need to buy that."

American McGee's Alice seems to be doing the same thing, I've heard references to it everywhere, and I can't find the damn game anywhere I look, which is pissing me off greatly...
Same, but it started when I first got Shogun Total War, with an advert for it on the back. I couldn't find it anywhere and eventually my interest waned... however that bloody review posted sometime last week by an Escapist re-ignited my interest.
