I dont listen to hype, sure, if I hear a game is good after its been released, ill check it out, but there is only a handfull of games that i will pre order, mainly due to faith in the developer.

I dont see how hype can really ruin something? Sure, if you thought it was going to be awesome, and it didnt end up being awesome, it eneded up being a big steaming pile, but if you hadnt listened to the hype would it have really made the game any better?

Honestly can't say I have, I usually don't listen to hype and make my own opinions from previews.

I know what games I will like, so I go from that instead of what I'm told is good.
But I spend so much time reading about games that are coming out that I can talk about them in the same depth 2 months later with people who have actually played it.

Edit: Oh hang on, Deus Ex: IW. I didn't read much though just saw it was coming out and got overly excited. This was before I read previews and numerous gaming sites though.
Still wasn't a bad game, just not as good.

But I know now that Deus Ex 3 is going to be terrible, and way to "run and gunny".

I may have listened to 'The Hype' when it came to Spore and Crysis. I found Spore to be quite poor and I actually really enjoyed Crysis.

The only way I can see hype able to make a game slightly worse is if you get the idea that it's really good and it turns out to be bad when you play it (I refer you back to Spore), but other than that it shouldn't really make any difference to the game.

I did for Modern Warfare 2, I suffered for it.

I did for Bioshock 2, was well worth it.

Sure have. My expectations for Fallout 3 were so high, that it hurt a lot when I played the final product. It's a good game, but not nearly good enough to meet my massive expectations.

Other over-hyped games that disappointed me when I finally got around to playing them:

Ocarina of Time
Super Mario Bros 3

WHAT?! I never had an N64 or NES, so the first time I played these was on the Wii, from the download store.

Half Life 1
Dues Ex
Fallout 1 + 2
Baldur's Gate 1 + 2

I sort of did for GOW3, although I was intending to buy it regardless, I loved the first two games. However, when I bought it, it just wasn't as awesome as I thought it'd be. Even if a game is magnificent, hype can cause you to get disappointed if it doesn't live up to it in every way.

However, I listened to the hype for Demon's Souls and ended up loving it. Now they're actually releasing it in Australia though, so I don't know what I'm going to do with my US Deluxe Edition...

MGS4 wasn't really all it was cracked up to be.

However, I was hyped out of my skull for Little Big Planet and it was even better than I'd imagined. So not all hype turns out to be a dud.

Yep. Mass Effect 2 didn't fail me, Iron Man 2 either, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 same.

However, Aion did...

The Getaway was a big one for me. Looked wonderful in all the screenshots and the thought of a more serious GTA set in London really appealed. Sadly I was left with an alright driving sandbox and horribly clunky on foot controls. This was only compounded by an absolutely terrible stealth section around half way through where you had to crawl through lasers whilst your character lurched about like he'd drunk lighter fluid. Never got past it.

Recently picked up the second one for a few pennies which was actually a pretty decent game.

The one time I can recall in which I bought a game purely based on hype, without even knowing really what the game was about, was Fallout 3. A friend called me and asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and I said Fallout 3.... I didn't even know it was an FPS :p

And well, Fallout 3 ranks as one of my all-time favourite games, and it is without a doubt my favourite game of this current generation. So yes, I have fallen for the hype - and it was soooooooooooooooo worth it.

Ever since Daikatana I have looked upon every new release with a healthy dose of cynicism.

Although the best new game I ever got was this little mod, it had just come out a month or so before and a few people mentioned I would like it, it was called called Counter Strike.

I went to the midnight launch of Halo 3, and it was worth it, at the time at least.

I also put off dating a girl because MGS4 had just come out and I ended up playing through it 5 times in 2 weeks. I then met a far superior girl for completely unrelated reasons, so in short, MGS4 was a fine girlfriend and anti-girlfriend.
