I stopped listening to hype after I got Modern Warfare 2

Now I go about my own opinion.

EDIT: There have been times the hype was true though for me. Like Fallout 3.

Yeah, most definitely. The biggest offender was Halo 3 for me, I followed it pretty closely and even bought all three editions for some reason. Wow, what a disappointment. I guess I was expecting the story and atmosphere to be a little darker due to all the trailers. And there to be bigger battles as seen in the super bowl trailer. Ah well, it taught me a lesson.

After that was Fable II, not quite as bad but I'd knew literally everything about the game during the development because I was an Admin on a Fable II forum. I was taking everything I'd heard with a massive pinch of salt (Molyneux after all) but when I got the game I found it to be pretty shallow, with a pretty poor story. Molyneux is a filthy liar.

Anyways, as a result, I only really take in tiny snippets of games I'm interested in now, it's working out much better so far.

have you?

i have, many times.

mass effect (2), bayonetta, resident evil 5, halo (2,3, ODST, wars), brutal ledgend and fable 2.

now i don't listen to anything (although i did listen to the hype for dragon age and liked that) so that i don't waste more money.

have you ever been convinced by hype?
If you hated those games, I have no idea what you do like.

OT: Final Fantasy 13. That game trying to call itself Final Fantasy is like a cup of urine trying to call itself Neptune, God of the Sea because you can find them both in water.
Agree on both points.

As for the negative falling for the hype, once. So far through my gaming career I have been hyped by GTAIV, FO3, MGS4, inFAMOUS and Oblivion and it was inFAMOUS I was disappointed by.

Dante's Inferno... Was really annoyed at how it just failed to live up to what it could have been, especially the last section of the game, that was aweful, like they stopped caring.

Fucking Portal.
NEVER have I been that let down by a game because of hype.
I mean, yeah, it is pretty fun and charming and all but I went in expecting the freaking deity of videogames condensed into two short hours.

I was a LITTLE DISAPPOINTED.

Hellgate:London. No other game has let me down so much compared to its advertising, though Spore comes close.

hmmm...I dont think so. I usually try before I buy, I'm pretty aware of what I spend my money on. I have bought into the hype and been disappointed by games, but I dont think I've bought many bad ones.

Dissappointments:

Bayonetta
GTA: San Andreas
GTA IV

Semi-disappointed by Brutal Legend. The demo was awesome with one of the best intros ever made, but the full game was nothing at all like it. I still loved the characters, the story and the presentation, but the gameplay was quite underwhelming and the story was too short. Bit dissapointed I bought it at full price. So yeah I guess I have fallen for the hype once. Damn you Brutal Legend ;(

I have fallen for the hype before games like any Halo games and alot of the newer first person shooters (lost all faith in the genre).

Trying to think, the new Alice in Wonderland film certainly wasn't as good as the hype said it would be. Slightly different example - Half Life Orange Box for ps3, everyone was going on about how awful it is but when I finally gave it a chance I found it lags a hell of a lot less than it does on my pc and looks a lot better too. No trophies though :(

I find it sort of sad that so many are listing Brutal Legend. I didn't fall for the hype on that game, but when people actually started complaining about the gameplay and I got to see some videos of it I totally fell for it and went out and bought it instantly. It's still one of my favorite games, I love "3rd person strategy". :)

I did fall for the hype on some other games though. Prototype comes to mind, as do Halo (I just can't see why people like that game).... Bayonetta was fun for a couple of hours, but man do I feel ripped off for paying full price for that game...

When I was younger yeah sure. Now I buy games if I think they look good i.e. by watching videos and looking at screen shots, trying to find out the actual gameplay features. Or actually trying them out at a friends house if they happen to get it before I do. Regardless of what people say about sequels I often find they are a safe bet. Although not this is not always the case (I'm looking at you Fable 2).

I don't read reviews anymore, not until after I've played a game anyway. Just because a 1000 people like doesn't mean you won't be the first not to.

Yes, I'll sometimes try to like games because they're popular. Like Starcraft and Warcraft 3 (the strategy bit - I always loved DOTA and Mauls). These are good games but still really boring if you're as bad at them as I am.

A minor "excuse" would be that me and my friends held a lot of great LAN parties. The point of LANs is multiplayer so liking the same games was important.

The only time I got something cause of the hype was Halo 3.

Since I actually enjoyed it, I might get other games from the series, IF Microsoft decides Poland deserves to have Xbox Live.

Final Fantasy X and XIII. My faith in XIV is dead at this point and, it sounds like I dodged a bullet with XII. Mirror's Edge was another one I fell for [no pun intended]

Modern Warfare 1 + 2, Blazblue, Fable 1 + 2, Brütal Legend, Halo, Bayonetta

Quite many, I know. But hey, I've never regretted it (so far).

I've never wanted to hug a random person on the internet as much as now. I sympathise, friend. Spore turned me into a hardened veteran of videogame cynicism.
