have you ever fallen for the hype?

Even if I'm almost totally certain I'll like a game, I still wait for reviews and gameplay footage no matter what the hype is. The only 2 games I've ever pre-ordered were Halo 2 and Mass Effect 2, and I wasn't disappointed by either.

Friends hyped Fallout 3 to me. Totally took me in. Practically forced me to buy the game.

Thank the gods. :)

I picked up both Modern Warfare 2 and Dragon Age: Origins against my better judgment to steer away from Modern era shooters and Tolkien-esque RPG's. Granted, both games have their positive points in my eyes and I still play them sometimes, but in hindsight I probably would not have bought either of them.

Still, it could have been worse I suppose.

Oh, and hype also got me to play Fallout 3, but that's a decision I will *never* regret :)

have you ever been convinced by hype?
I don't know what the OP means by falling for the hype. Can someone explain that to me?

I like games, I like games others like, I like games others don't like, I like games that get rave reviews, and I dislike games that get rave reviews.

Do I like every single game that gets a positive review? No, no one does all the time. What is the point of this thread?

Is the point here that people get carried away by others opinions and fail to think for themselves? If so, I feel sorry for you. Is that what this thread is about????
basiicly, but it's hard to create your own opinion on, say, halo 3 when everyone ever is saying it's the greatest game ever.

ODST.

You know what ODST was? It was Bungie listening to the opinions of people who HATED Halo. I've this friend (who owns a PS3 so must hate everything on Xbox by law or something) and he would complain about how there's no stealth aspects to Halo and it's just brainless run-and-gun.

Hell yes it is, that's the point. Halo isn't a refined, or even an atmospheric title, it's just running and shooting hordes of purple aliens in their faces.

It's not about sneaking around and getting your ass kicked.
And don't get me started on the health vendors.

Guilty, Modern Warfare 2 (AND its expensive map pack...). Ugh, hype is deadly.

Where do I even start?

MW2, Halo 3, Heavy Rain, the Wii, Halo 3: ODST, Splinter Cell: Conviction, both Gears of War games, CoD4, pokemon games, Soul Calibur IV, GTA4, and the list goes on, and on, and on...

I would learn wasn't it because most games are given to me as gifts anyways, but there are some I regret asking for more than others... *stares coldly at Spore*

Modern Warfare 2. That game was so, so broken.
*Is so, so broken

Major hype has always grabbed my attention, but I rarely invest in a game before reading the reviews or previews, and making sure it's something I want to spend money on. Though any hype on a game I didn't particularly like, or was disappointed by made that dislike/disappointment seem a little more solid, at least momentarily.

EDIT: Over the years I've come to realize that a lot of hype surrounding a game doesn't mean I'm going to love it, or that I should dislike a game even more because I didn't love it.

I sometimes fall for the hype or expectations based on previous publisher success - Infinite Undiscovery was one such failure... As well as most of the Halo games...

Then again, contrary hype can be fun (such as when nay-sayers told me not to play Halo Wars, and yet I found it refreshingly entertaining), so a healthy dose of hype can keep a property on your radar. Just listen to both professional critique and word-of-mouth before committing to anything.

Oh, and hype can have another function: elevating vaporware to astounding levels...

Team Fortress 2 development time - about 10 years... Complete redesign, moratorium from Valve, and BAM, instant classic.

Duke Nukem Forever development time - about 12 years... Highs, lows, mehs, oohs, then suddenly, SCRAPPED! Though the property is still licensed and on the standby - but will anyone buy it if it does come out under a different tag? Out of principle, I think most will simply boycott it...

Starcraft II development time - also about 12 years and counting... I almost don't want this one to come out. Truthfully, it has been on the horizon for so long, I wouldn't know what to do with it once I got it... Like the dog that finally brings home the rear bumper and stares at it, stumped...

Every time a new Halo game comes out (With the exception of Halo Wars), but I always end up very happy with my purchase...

I've gotten my hopes up because of hype, but hype for me is dependent on my caring for the series in the first place. For instance, I didn't get hyped about Halo 3 because of the marketing, I got hyped because I loved the other games in the franchise. The marketing just played into that fact. But in the end, Halo 3 was not quite as good as the other two. Still good, but not quite as good. To love something because of hype is stupid, but I would argue that to hate something because it didn't live up, even though it's still pretty good, is even worse.

I mostly fell for hype at the start of this gen, now I know not to get pulled into hype because you will mostly be disappointed.

I don't typically listen to hype. If I play a game, it's because I want to and I don't care if other people liked it or not. xD

I remember trying the demo for Metal Gear Solid 4 though, just to see what was so great about it. Though, that wasn't really a "falling for it" thing, as I really did like it.
and I proceeded to play the rest of the MGS series after that...
So it really was a good thing.

never because i buy games a couple of months after they come out so i can listen to people moan and i can make a decision off that
