Have you ever felt cheated after you bought/rented a game?

Suikoden 4, and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner. (they're JRPGs)

Two series that I really liked, and boy was I disappointed.

Suikoden 3 was flawed, but ambitious. I figured the next one would clean up the mess and smooth things out. Instead, they simplified the hell out of it, took out all the systems and customization.. it's actually dinkier than the first in the series. Like they pulled a Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, but to a greater degree and without warning.

Devil Summoner was kinda the same deal, super-simplified. I could have accepted some of that, cuz it was an "Action RPG", but.. yeah, the action was pretty weak too. I was riding high on Nocturne (another SMT game) and holy hell was Devil Summoner a major let-down. (I'm not entirely pleased with the direction of the last few "Persona" games either, but it's not nearly as bad as Devil Summoner.)

A few other JRPG "rentals" (Gamestop return policy) made me cringe, but in retrospect I should have known better. Magna Carta.. gawd, what did I expect? That's a game to judge by its cover. (It's a team of pursed-lips boobs-a-poppin' anime girls.) Yeah, I bought that. And I kinda bought it BECAUSE it was overpriced, so I figured it was prolly some rare gem or something. At least bringing it back was less embarrassing than buying it.. so yeah, I cheated myself on that one. What a dumbass!

LotR Conquest.
Managed to completely destroy a formula that had worked perfectly in Battlefront. EA are such ingenious fools.

Oh, really what hasn't been a disappointment? I can think of a few, out of my many games rented and purchased, that I don't regret paying money for:

- Okami: rented for Wii. It was fun, and I'm glad I only rented it. I did the same with Mario Galaxy, which I also enjoyed, but I also completed it in a few days. I felt cheated that the game didn't even last a whole rental period.

- Shadow of the Colossus: rented and purchased. I still get a kick out of it about once a year. It prompted me to get Ico, which I enjoy greatly, but not enough for the price I paid.

- Siren for PS2: I bought it used for, I think $7. Pretty fun and a great bargain. The disc was irreparably scratched, but that only affected some cutscenes later in the game. I think I don't regret this because it was so damned cheap.

- Final Fantasy XI: This is tough, because for a year or two I loved playing it, and the one or two expansions I bought were fun, too. I didn't mind paying monthly for it at all. Later, as I moved on, I still had a subscription but wasn't playing as much. I only felt cheated for the last few months.

- Fallout 3: Another toughie. I find I'm having a very hard time getting into the game, as if I have a choice between Fallout 3 and something else I'll pick the other game, and so I kind of regret paying so much for it. But also every time I do play I'm totally engrossed and having more fun than I ever did in any other FPS, RPG, or Bethesda FPS-RPG-mashup. I'll say I regret not waiting for the price to drop a bit.

- Any Metal Gear Solid game: I'm a sucker for them. Even MGS4, although depressingly short in gameplay, was satisfying by its other merits.

And that's it really. Anything released pre-2000 I consider painted by nostalgia, and my judgement will be biased. Besides those, I haven't bought a game since the Starcraft Warchest that I haven't regretted the decision. Few games I have are bad; since I buy so rarely I can't afford to get a game I'm not absolutely sure I'll love. But, most of them still aren't worth $20, much less $50 or $60. Video game price points are way too skewed right now. Even World of Goo, that I got for $10, cost too much for what it offered.

Here's a stab at most of the games I feel in some way cheated by so you can see where I'm coming from, all post-2000, mostly by series: GTA, Hitman, Myst, Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, SaGa, Sims, Sim City, Command and Conquer (and Red Alert), Warcraft (not WoW, never played it), Diablo, Dungeon Siege, Jak, any Tom Clancy game (Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, etc), X series, Dawn of War, Space Empires, Black and White, any Star Wars game, Homeworld, Earth 20-whatever series, Halo, Far Cry, Half Life (and CS, TF2), Spore, Bioshock, Pirates!, Sins of a Solar Empire, Mass Effect, any sports or racing games, any licensed IP games like movie or anime tie-ins (including Kingdom Hearts), many, many dime-a-dozen one-offs like Black, Crimson Skies, or Doom 3 (yeah, it was a generic FPS with Doom skins), too many rentals to remember, and so on.

I absolutely loved Saga Frontier for PS1, so I was sorely disappointed when I bought Saga Frontier 2 brand new and found out it was awful.

I learned a valuable lesson to try games before buying them. Which is why I love Live Arcade for having demos for everything these days.

Two things spring to mind.

2.Empire: Total War

The jury (if you will) is still out on this one, but if a patch fixing all the problems I've had doesn't arrive soon, I'm going to have to kill someone. When I bought Total War, I was kind of expecting to be able to play it, rather than it fucking up halfway through the loading screen and cutting out eight times out of ten ever since I used steam *shakes fist at steam* to get the extra units that were supposed to come with the version I bought.
I'll say this now, I don't like the idea of having to use steam for my games. I like the Internet, really I do, it's brought me some great things, and was a fantastic help during my awkward, pimply and sex crazed teenage years. But I'd much prefer to have a more, manual way of playing and maintaining my games than having some powerful Internet conglomerate keeping hold of it for me. Despite the fact that I am a 360 gamer (Oh ho!), I would prefer to have a more reliable and stable way of playing my own games.
That said, if the patch comes through fast enough, maybe I wont kill anyone. Maybe.

That game is "El Resource Hog De Magnifico" - are you sure it'ssteam that's the problem? Not your RAM or something? Are you on Vista btw?
Yes I am. Don't get me started about Vista...
I suppose it's possibly something to do with my computer, but I did notice a significant drop in the games ability to run after validating the code for the extra units on steam.
An update came in yesterday, so far it hasn't cut out mid-load, but the loading screen is still slow as fuck (which again, wasn't quite as bad pre-activation of extra units via steam). Highly likely something to do with my computer rather than the game itself at this point. As far as I know, I have sufficient RAM, but my (I'm not very computer savvy, bear with me) proscessor speed thingy is a bit low.

Mirror's Edge. I'm glad my brother got it on his 360, in retrospective.

Uh, just so fustrating, it's like it doesn't want you to play.

The Guitar Hero game for the 80's. My stepdad rented it back when I actually played Guitar Hero.....needless to say it sucked.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir, That game is a piece of nostalgic crap. It makes me wait 1 million light years for it, then screws the whole thing up by decideing a story and player immersion only detract from the game experience. I mean, wtf? the "new content" was buggy, laggy, and illogical. The whole thing felt like Icewind Dale 2, but without the option to actually go crazy and murder everyone.

Hired out L4D on 360 when I have it on PC.... dear god the framerate and detail was terrible on 360. I felt embarrassed trying to show it off to my 360 fanboy friends since they havent played it.
....we must be playing two different games, the 360 version looks great and never slows down.
Are you kidding.. theres so much slowdown when a horde of zombies come at you, the 360 version is like the PC version on the lowest settings.
I don't think so, never happens to me on 360. Mine runs like smooth velvet, and looks glorious in HD.

When I was younger I remember renting a Mario Kart clone called Speed Freaks for the PSone and absolutely loving it. The only problem was that there was a bug in the UK rental version which meant that one of the levels halfway through made you get stuck about 10 seconds into the first lap. Was very disappointed to not be able to complete it.

Oh yes, and Age of Mythology.

1: Spore. It just looked so good in the 30 minute preview, but that changed, it really changed. (didn't stop me from playing it for over 50 hours, though)

2: Metroid. Ok, right off the bat you're pitted against enemies that you can't even hit unless their on a wall. As soon as you get out of the first tunnel, you have to go through the same room like 50 times before you get to another hallway that has flying enemies that move up and down so quickly that you can barely even hit them before they touch you dealing 50 damage.

3: Half-Life. Bought it off of steam for a buck. Played it twice and ran into a fatal glitch both times.

Oh yes, another thread were SSB Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Tiberium Wars easily take the prize. Returned them straight away like they were broken and told them they should put it in the bargain bin because there is no way they are worth 100$!

Nintendo betrayed us and EA just suck!
mhm i heard that, i wish i didnt hear that but hooollyyy shit i was sooo disappointed with myself in wasting a whole 50 dollars on that terrible waste of time.
