Have you ever gotten a game into an unwinnable/unfinishable state?

Metal arms: Glitch in the System.

In the second last mission, you have to find a bunch of computer chips to take control of the boss in order to activate a computer to shut down all the bad guys. One of these chips you have to buy and I didn't have enough money to buy it. You can't go back levels and there was no money to be found on that level so I had to start the game again. That wasn't my first playthrough so it only took 2 or 3 days to get back to there.

Metro 2033... I haven't got enough ammo for this fucking mission. And there is no way to get more.

Final Fantasy VIII - the last fight with Ultimecia's Guardian Force. When you get the guardian at 50% he does a spell that does 9999 damage. If you don't have either a) A Phoenix Down or b)a Hero Potion or c)Some invincibility spell, the game will not progress. I put the game down for about 6 months because I could not finish it, until I realized I had 1 hero drink, which was enough to allow me to finish the game... Completely broken mechanic.
I have played that game over dozen of times and thats not true. Maybe you were just too low level?
Your response is completely paradoxical. You say you've completed the game over a dozen times and think that the problem is due to his low level. However, if you'd played the game over a dozen times, you'd know that the enemies in the game scale in level with you, so even bosses wouldn't deal that much damage to you if you were a low level because they would be low levels as well!
Oh, I forgot that, but only because it seems the game gets easier when you level up. I know enemies level too but it seems they dont do it so fast as you.
So on that insta-killing boss. You are just doing something wrong. Only Omega uses move which hits every character for 9999dmg every time.

Edit: Did you know level scaling only had 3 "steps"? So there is only 3 different levels for each enemy. 1 when you are 1-30, 1 for 31-60 and 1 for 61-99(not 100% sure about the levels). SO, he was level 75 and has just past the level 61 cap so the boss would seem powerful. Solution? Leveling up...
Actually Greiver's Shockwave Pulsar DOES do 9999 dmg, Which is why it is considered among the best of Quistis' Limit Breaks.

The trick to beating Greiver is to have VERY high Elemental Defense on everything and at least decent Status Defense on everything because then you actually absorb the attack :p

Killed a save in Diablo 1 When I went to Lazarus Ill-equipped and saved there... pretty much right before the end. Gimped pretty much all my LOD chars so they wouldn't make it past Act 1 in Hell. Nearly lost a save in Metro 2033 when that game saved right in the middle of a room full of opponents...

AND THIS GODDAMN OCZ VERTEX 2 JUST DIED ON ME, which taught me that Windows 7, unlike XP, has a special save folder on your system drive instead of saving straight to my documents, which is a hard drive that survived. My gf and I spend days fleshing out our Drakensang chars, and I see no chance in hell that I can restart that game till January. And I loved this game.

I thought I had the weakness problem in Oblivion. Then I discovered how to make invisibility armour.

In KotOR, on the final planet before the Star Forge, I accidentally said something that led me to have to kill the black Rakata, whom I had chosen as my allies (killing the Elder Rakata). Unfortunately, the game autosaved on me, and I (not knowing how fucked I was) saved the game after killing them all. Barely even 30 minutes from the end of the game, and I'm stuck. Goddamn.

I'm sure I HAVE run across completely unwinnable scenarios, but can't think of any off the top of my head... however I just had a very close call last week. I was playing Warhammer 40k: Dark Crusade, as the Necrons. I had facerolled over every single enemy in the game by sending in my massively buff Necron Lord to solo the whole army. Then I came down to the last territory: The Eldar stronghold. You cannot win the Eldar stronghold by destroying their HQ building; you HAVE to take 3 specific strategic points and hold them for 10 minutes.

They had *FIVE* vehicle portals up and running, cranking out Fire Prisms literally faster than I could kill them. Fire Prisms also do horrible things to vehicles and buildings, AND they bounce melee units. I sent my Lord in. He destroyed the HQ, then three Prisms ganged up on him and kept him in perma-bounce: he simply could not stand up long enough even to teleport away. They just bounced him into a corner, and then kept him aloft. FOREVER. So I sent my Monolith in. Sadly, Monoliths are both building AND vehicle, and the Fire Prisms vaporized my huge fracking battle tank in about 30 seconds. I ended up having to make a huge heap of heavy infantry units, send them in targetting a specific building, and hope they damaged it a little before they got bounced to death. Then doing that again. And again. And again. For TWO HOURS. With their HQ gone, they couldn't construct NEW buildings, and eventually I whittled down the massive manufacturing complex they'd set up until I could actually kill the units faster than they could build them. MADNESS.

In Oblivion, one of the things I needed to get rid of my vampirism never appeared. The witch I needed to talk to would never talk about, "Hey, you're a vampire. Do you want to get rid of that?" in some fashion. I even tried coming at night or braving the unforgiving sun.

No matter how many times I reloaded, went to other places, loaded the disk onto the console, nada.

SO I kept making a new character, and another one, and another one. Same problem persisted, mostly because I had a hard time doing the necessary mission without being infected. So then I just gave up and chucked the game somewhere.

My brother is finding that he's having the same issue, except its the mages that seems to disappear on him.
You realise you can just neck back a cure disease potion before full vampirism sets in right? Poryphic Heamophilia (probable spelling fail) is the infection you have 3 days (I think) before you fully turn. This is completely curable in normal ways, as opposed to vampirism being a ***** to remove.

only a game of solitaire. I saved an unwinnable game. Drove me crazy when it kept asking me if I wanted to continue and I knew I couldn't win.

I still think it a glitch, but I got to the big boss battle before the final dungeon in Legend of Legaia. Here I am, stuck in this little area that I teleported to with nothing but the boss and a save point. I have used the save point, but for some reason it does not allow me to leave the area, like every other save point (Which is why I call it a glitch( and so I'm screwed trying to fight the boss without any revive items and limited healing items. That was a really hard dungeon leading up to the boss, and of course the boss was no easier. Man still never finished that game. I'm surprised it never hit PSN.
Man, I loved that game when I played it for my original PS2. The game was a breeze up until it became that red-moon bullshit. I guess I was far too underlevelled, because even just random encounters would decimate me.

Haven't touched it since.

(Ocarina of Time) I used up a silver key in the wrong spot, which prevented me from getting in to another room to find the other keys I needed, and ended up screwing up my entire game. Had to restart from the beginning twice because of that particular combination of errors.
Oh SWEET VINDICATION!!!!!!!!!!!! My son has spent years raging at me for selling my copy, not understanding that as much as I enjoyed the game, we were stuck as he had used a key in the way you describe and I just didn't have the heart to start the whole dang thing all over again. He didn't believe you could accidently waste a key in this manner. It wasn't just me all along!!!

Not sure if someone else has said this already, being 9 pages long and all. But if you play Star Wars episode one on the PS1, when you are on tatooine, if you kill enough people, anakin refuses to go with you. Because he thinks you're a bad person. Which is ridiculous. All I did was stab his mum with a light saber.

Are you on the PS3? Because I know the vampire cure has a bad glitch on the ps3 that renders it unfinishable. I had a problem like this when I first played (on the PS3). So from now on when I play Oblivion and I'm doing a quest dealing with vampires I always drink a cure disease potion or go to a chapel just in case.

I was unable to beat Corvus due to my party build (Minstrel lvl 38, Paladin lvl 35, Ranger lvl 30 and a Mage lvl 22). Just gave up and started again from the beginning

It's no quite unfinishable. If you change your system language and visit the witch (changing it to German works for me) you can give her the wretched Bloodroot or whatever. Downside being that for some mad reason is completely punches Shivering Isles in the face and resets it, causes people to appear outside the portal and all sorts. But you can cure your vampire problems =D

OT: Fallout 3 (surprise!) when dear old Dad decided to disappear. Forever. In the middle of the wasteland.

Project Zero.
Saved right before the Blinded woman attacks after you find hells gate.
With no herbal medicine.
And about 30% health.

...not fun =/
