Reviews are simply the opinions of journalists that weren't good enough to do actual journalism, so it never really bothers me when someone dislikes something I like. The only reviews that make me angry are ones that make absolutely no sense, like 90% of anything in Game Informer. I mean, seriously. What qualifications do you need to work at Game Informer? 2 thumbs and the ability to wipe drool from your mouth?

Their scores are usually similar, if not identical, to IGN, which is fine. But what the reviewers write usually completely contradicts the score given, or just flat out has nothing to do with the game. For instance, Resonance of Fate was given a 6 (I think). But the entire review was just a paragraph or so about how awesome the game was. Contradicted the score entirely. Didn't even mention anything bad about the game.

In summary, I guess I only get angry at incompetent pseudo-journalists at half-assed publications, not the review itself.
I dunno, I don't think that's totally fair a lot of game journalists do just copy press statements and write poorly worded reviews but I do think there are people who went in to games journalism who realy do care about gaming. For example say what you will about Jim Sterling you can tell that when he writes he actually cares about what he is writing even if it does come across inflamatory at times for another example vist the website No High Scores, they right truthfully cutting right through corporate bs and have some really well thought out essays, seriously just give them a visit.

TLDR: Alot of games journalists are hacks but there are some really passionate writers out there

Reviews are subjective and I respect their opinions. However... when your review is heavily comedy-based, there can another issue. Case in point: every single time Yahzee reviews anything by Nintendo.

There are some valid criticisms in there. However, he spends about 2 minutes (of a 5 minute video, I remind you) making the SAME JOKES. "Ooooh, here's a comment on how I hate motion controls" and "Ooooh, everyone who likes Mario is just a nostalgia-blinded MORON" and "Oooooh, ANOTHER mention on how I don't like motion controls" and "Oooooh, bad graphics" and "Ooooooh, Nintendo milks their franchises and THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO DO" and "Oooooh, here's a joke about the minimal plot".

And then "Oh wait, I have to actually review this game now, don't I? Not just make the same jokes I make in every single Wii game review? Well, there's only about 2 minutes left, and I need half a minute for the credits, so here are some footnotes on things I did and didn't like. But I also need to spend 30 seconds nitpicking for comedic effect, so that's only about 60 seconds of actual criticism."

The reviews themselves are good. But with anything based in comedy, repetition is one of the worst sins you can commit. And I find it humorously ironic that Yahtzee keeps accusing Nintendo of rehashing by rehashing all his jokes about them.

Well theres your problem, you seem to think Yahtzee reviews things, Zero Punctuation isnt a review series, its a comedy series with large amounts of criticism involved, but no reviewing.

Me im fine with reviews unless they are obviously wrong, like e.g. misunderstanding a game mechanic or something

No, it never bothers me when someone hates something I love. I don't know why it bothers other people, it genuinely confuses me.
I've always been able to make fun of the things I enjoy (and still enjoy them), so it doesn't matter if someone else does it either.

Yahtzee doesnt really review as so much as to give his impression on something. But that man needs a fucking hug. He can't find any fun in even the simplest of titles. Unless its a piece of art he just totally- wait he hated Bioshock? F**k him. The man's stuck in the 1990s pc era.

Also IGN reviews scores are based off popularity. Greg Miller needs to work at McDonalds or a place where he cant talk on the internet.

Not so much a review, but a promotional video shown in game stores about Earthbound
It only shows gameplay from the first 10 minutes, doesn't show any action other than an overleveled Ness killing the weakest enemy in the game by walking into it, spoils the end of the game, and implies that the final boss is a tiny bee that you meet for a few seconds at the start of the game. Seeing as how this was shown in 1995 without the internet, its no wonder the game had terrible sales in America

I will give it a try with grated teeth and a drink in my hand. Jim Sterling has never been a person I like to read, regardless if he words things correctly. He comes off like he is some sort of savior for game "journalism", and reminds me of the incredibly pompous and preachy Extra Credits, but in a far more entertaining and easy to digest way -- which is like saying that rancid beef is easier to eat than rancid fish. I have not checked out his site, though, so I'll try it.
Oh yeah I can see your point he is love or hate kind of personality and even if he writes some things ironically I can easily see why people dslike him, I also agree with you about Extra Credits although they make interesting and well researched points they've gotten way too preachy now to the point where I can't listen to them anymore.

You should try Destructoid though they occasionally have intersting essays and talking points and their blogging community can sometimes produce interesting reads.

Yes I have, but I have a good reason on this one. Metroid: Other M. Almost no reviewer got the sexism. I think it was like one mainstream reviewer that noticed(Two if you count yahtzee as mainstream, which, as popular as he is, I don't and I'm not one of his haters). That just pissed me the fuck off.
Ugh then never look at the Game overthinker's (or MovieBob as he's also known) videos defending that piece of crap, he even implied that the whole sexim thing was acceptable because of Japan's cultural differences, I really dislike Bob I don't know how people can like him.

I watch reviews for entertainment, since if someone makes jokes about the games I like, I usually joke about them too since I like them so much, if it's not a joke review and its an honest opinion, pointing out obvious flaws, I'll often agree or disagree but not get mad about it. Other people's opinions are what they are, they aren't going to change my feelings about something, only I can.

The majority of GameSpot and IGN reviews- some of them read like goddamn press releases.

Other than that I never like a game to the point that I get offended when someone insults it, because Im not a total fuckwit.

Not really. angry. The closest I got was kind of confused, and that was at Yahtzee's recent Gears of War 3 video. Such as, it never says the planet will explode in the game.

The one which really made me angry was of Football Manager (2009 I think). Essentially the reviewer panned it because it was boring, had too many numbers and because you couldn't control the players during games. Did he not even read the title of the game?! Having a game reviewed by someone who does not like or has no knowledge of the genre is at best lazy and at worst calls the whole validity of a publication into question.

I've never been a seething font of rage over a review but I have been disappointed when a review has clearly been done without playing much of the game, an example would be Yahtzee reviewing Monster Hunter Tri, I don't think you can seriously call it a review if you've only played the tutorial section of the game.

I get irritated. Usually when it goes from review to "i'm a pretentious cockbag who won't review the game seriously because its a shooter and we all know who plays them -nudge nudge-".

Those guys annoy me a fair bit

Only if there are factual errors in the review.

Or when people <url=http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=449885>lie in their review. Oh, IGN, you need help.
Holy molly, I hadn't even heard about that. That's really classy, even for IGN.

Anyway, I don't really get "angry". I think it's disgraceful for the reviewer if their reviews are factually wrong, but I don't personally get "angry" about it per se.

Nope. Silly notion.

Although I have occasionally got angry at people getting angry at reviews, which isn't much better.
