I was not trying to trick you into saying that crushing on a celebrity is okay. I was merely stating that most normal people would think that is perfectly normal; at least in your youth, and that I would think it would be slightly strange if you didn't.Kermi said:This is nothing but a strawman argument. You've attempted to trap me into saying crushing on a celebrity is ok then attempted to justify crushing on an anime character by stating - correctly - that for the everyman a shot at a relationship is practically equal.Jonluw said:No, you did not say that having a crush on a celebrity is okay. I assumed you thought so, since most people would not have any objections to someone having a crush on a celebrity. Do you really think it is not okay to have a crush on a celebrity?Kermi said:Did I say it was?Jonluw said:But having crushes on celebrities is okay?Kermi said:The answer is no.
At the height of my anime fandom (which ended some 5 years ago) I could ogle the visual design, I could enjoy the dialogue and appreciate the portrayal of a personality, but I never, ever forgot that these characters do not exist, have never existed and will never exist. They are the product of collaborative design and present some sort of ideal. The worst thing a peson can do to themselves is obsess over something they cannot have or expect reality to live up to those expectations.
I know some people who try to make the excuse that they have a crush on the voice actress... until they find out the voice actress is ugly, or a massive ***** in real life.
Seriously, I have friends who cannot have relationships because real life people aren't like their favourite anime characters. Get out while you still can.
Even if having a crush on a celebrity is ok (and while that's still debateable it's not really any worse than having a crush on a teacher) at least that persons exists. Granted in reality they're probably not the person you think they are and in the case of actors nothing like the character you associate with them. But they exist.
Getting into a relationship with a celebrity is practically just as plausible as getting into a relationship with an anime character; particularly when considering that the average person crushing on a celebrity is a teenager, so the celebrity would be quite a bit older.
In addition, the person will most likely never have seen the celebrity in real life. The entire fundament for the crush are pictures and video of the celebrity, and his/her perceived personality. Just like with an anime character. And before you argue that the anime character is drawn: There really isn't that much of a difference. The character is drawn with the specific intention of being appealing to humans, just like the pictures taken of the celebrity. There's nothing wrong or unnatural about feeling attracted to, or turned on by, a drawn representation of a human being.
You argue that "at least the person exists". In practice, no they don't. They do exist, technically, yes; but they do not even have a tangental relation to the crushing person's life. For all intents and purposes the celebrity does not exist in the life of the person with the crush. He/she might as well be a bunch of pictures of a random person, with a artificially generated personality tacked on.
Except firstly, I'm still not entirely in agreement that it is ok. Admire, respect, perhaps. But crush on... as you say, they're not obtainable. You argue that the celebrity you idealise is probably not the same in real life because they have a carefully crafted public persona. Well thanks for the newsflash, I only already said that as part of my argument against crushing on celebrities.
Secondly, while the odds that someone like you or me will get to bang the celebrity of our dreams might be only slightly better than 1:6,000,000,000 against, but that's still a 0.00000000016(repeating)% chance higher than the busty anime flavour of the month is going to step out of your TV screen tonight and help finish you off.
Here, for fun I'll tack on a little scale I just dreamed up. I call it the Parallel Underlying Nexus of Crazy. When you're trying to decide how normal you are, just ask yourself, do I feel lucky, PUNC?
Admiring a regular person: Normal
Admiring a celebrity: Normal
Admiring a fictional character: Normal
Crushing on a regular person person: Normal/hormonal

Continuing from last post: Oops, shouldn't have said that I'd adress the rest of your post later, since there really isn't much else to adress, other than mentioning that the chances of me getting it on with Angelina Jolie are probably a lot less than 1 in 6 billion.Kermi said:This is nothing but a strawman argument. What is a crush? It's a minor infatuation. As long as it doesn't progress beyond that to the point of obsession to the determent of real life relationships, I don't see a problem nor the need for professional intervention.Tourette said:canadamus_prime said:Why? As long as you keep it in perspective and don't do anything stupid or irrational (or both) like say getting married to a Japanese love pillow with that character's image on it, I fail to see the problem.Tourette said:Erm, am I the only person who read this threads title and thought how messed up this sounds and then saw that people do have crushes on fictional animated characters.
Seriously, you people need to seek help.
OT: Just a few, Lina from Slayers, Videl from DBZ, and Kagome from InuYasha. I still adore all 3 of 'em, but I'd say I'm over the 'crush' thing.
Why you ask. Because it's fucking mental. Thats why. Take a step back everyone and read everything in this thread and think for a moment what is going on. Yes. thats right. It is seriously mental.
Go and ask any mental health practicioner and they will say they same thing I bet. I doubt they will say it is healthy and should be encouraged.
Maybe I am wrong and you are all having a hard time going through puberty and have a below par IQ. Anythng else would be very embarrassing and should be kept to yourselves.
You had a crush on louise... seriously that psycho horsewhip sadist *****...Okuu_Fusion said:Yes... too many to recall...
Zero Louise, Konata Izumi, Taiga Aisaka, Haruhi Suzumiya...
Only ones I can remember at the moment...
Actually I disagree, because you know that a character is not real they really have to affect you emotionally to make you like them. Thus in time you may look for personality more than looks in real life.Tourette said:canadamus_prime said:Why? Agreed. I don't recall ever having a crush on any animated character.technoted said:I prefer people, the fleshy kind that I can actually touch.
