Have you ever sat down and thought 'Yep, this franchise is dead'?

Spyro the Dragon.

Spyro went from being a lovable little dragon in a game series filled with so much charm it was impossible to hate it.

Now Activision want to turn him into some stupid marketing ploy where you literally buy a game that is purposely unfinished and are then required to buy some crappy toys to unlock a whole bunch of content in the game.

Oh yeah, and now he looks like this...

The Halo series was dead right after Halo:2 (with the exception of Halo 3 being quite good).
And now Halo CE is going to get re-released with better graphics and Halo 4 is in production.
PLEASE MASTER CHEIF, JUST DIE ALREADY!!

Splinter Cell Conviction: The irony being that in its own right the game was decent but it lost all its unique gameplay which made it stand out from the crowd and became another 3rd person regen health cover based shooter, seriously most of the game was steering you towards having a shootout, it just wasn't Splinter Cell anymore.

Dawn of War 2: No bases, limited units with small numbers and only a mediocre amount of strategy to use really, they turned a fairly good RTS game into an uncomfortable curdling mix of RPG and RTS.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma: I liked the NES titles, they were ball breakingly hard as everyone knows but I still liked them a lot, veyr fun 2D sidescrolling action. However I had missed out on a lot of its recent stuff until I picked up Sigma and found that they'd made a very half assed, poorly contorlled slash em up. The difficulty was mianly dictated by a poor camera which usually covered half the screen with Ryu's body. I just couldn't like it, all the difficulty was for the wrong reasons, poor control, poor camera etc instead of just twitch reactions and good old fashioned challenge.

Call of Duty: Of course this is on the list we're getting them every bloody year and they still haven't changed anything for the better since Call of Duty 4. If anything they're getting worse and the game balance is just broken as hell in a tide of auto/dual shotguns, stupid perks and overpowered killstreaks.

Well, I personally felt this way after the release of Devil May Cry 4. The upcoming DMC hasn't done anything to change my mind yet, though I admit I would be pleased if it defies my expectations and turns out to be as good as the original was, or Devil May Cry 3.

I don't quite feel this way about the Assassin's Creed franchise, so maybe I shouldn't mention it, but I am very disillusioned with it. The original AC was a game that showed a lot of promise, and Assassin's Creed 2 delivered on that. But then we had Brotherhood which was an expansion with a new mechanic priced as a full game. And now we have another bloody expansion coming out. As far as I'm concerned, until I see a new game with a new number, a new time period, a new protagonist, and multiple bloody cities, I'm over this franchise.

And lastly, Dragon Age. Epic first game in the series followed by a pathetic mess for a sequel. The first DLC was good (haven't played the second) I concede, so maybe there's hope for the third title in the franchise, but... I just don't know. :(

No one said it yet?
Duke Nukem. It's been dead for over a decade, and the reanimated corpse construct that is DNF did nothing to change that.

No. How would that would be for me to decide when a franchise is dead or not? That's just a really arrogant. Yeah, it's just overly dramatic. "Dead" to me means "discontinued" not "not meeting my expectations anymore".

Besides, why would I need to be sitting down?

I'm unsure if the word "franchise" can be applied to TV shows, if it can, Then Two and a half men with the new ketchup guy (Yeah, I can't remember his name, but it's close to ketchup, so that'll do).

If not? hmm, Command and Conquer, the Tiberian universe anyway. The generals universe may still have something good to give.

And I guess I should say Call of Duty, but honestly, I hope I'm wrong. Time will tell.

You know Command & Conquer, right?

You know how it was based on vast armies, base building, gathering of resources and great, if incredibly campy, cinematics starring some of the biggest names in Hollywood?

Yeah, Command & Conquer 4 had none of that. Literally, it cut out everything that was good with the series.

Usually, if I buy a game that's not very good, I get over it. It's not a big deal, because even your regular sub-par AAA game is decent. But C&C4 is such a steaming pile of goat shit that it still pains me that I own that piece of filth.

How the hell could they fuck up so bad?! And it was supposed to be the last game in the series, the game that would tie up the overarching story. The fucking hell it did, it just left absolutely every single question unanswered and felt like being kicked in the balls by Hitler.
The very first game I bought for myself was Red Alert. I'd prefer a kick in the balls over the heresy that was C&C4.

Yeah, it happened to most of my favourites around 2005. I really really liked Nintendo before then, but they really are just relying on classic franchises now which is a shame because they do have a fuck ton of money. Not just Nintendo either, Command & Conquer is one I can not even look at the name on the shelves any more. Can't remember the rest.

How about Crash Bandicoot? RIP.
Also opposite of this is the Castlevainia games for the DS. I'm quite enjoying them.

The most obvious one would be X-Com. There's no chance anything remotely resembling the original gameplay would be released with that name. It was dead 10 years ago, and no necromancer will ever have enough powers to animate that name again.

GTA 4 or should I say 'Taxi Driver Simulator'. After flying a jet in San Andreas, driving a taxi in a dark, uninteresting environment was not my idea of fun.
They almost literally jumped the shark in San Andreas.

Jumping out of a jetplane without a chute, how can that ever be beaten? ;-)

I used to be a huge Halo-fan... Untill I realised that it was really Bungie I adored.

This was around when I saw the Halo 4 trailer...

Also... Fable 3. Peter Moleneux said that he hates the notion of trilogy's... I sure hope he has changed his mind.

World of Warcraft Cataclysm... Its not dead... But it is to me.
Wonder how many players of today, also played during Cataclysm?

Derp durr hurr is what comes to mind the second I see that.

Guitar Hero has been dead since the Guitar Hero 3 (Which had a lot of good songs tbh).
Other games that are dead (Or it seems like that at least), are for example Jak and Daxter (I JUST WANT ONE MORE OF THAT GAME SERIES, AND IT NEEDS TO BE GOOD!). Too bad it died after Jak X and The Lost Frontier. :(

And now we have Fable: The Journey. Why Peter? Why?
I was a little excited about a new Fable game, so I youtubed it. I'm sad now, so very sad.

I will go an add Max Payne, still lacking all the info about Max Payne 3. But from what I have seen I must ask, why is it not in Noir City and why is there sunlight?
