Just as the title says, have you ever surprised yourself in a game, by doing something different in your usual playstyle?

For me, it was getting the Hard to the Core achievement in Dead Space 2. Now, this requires you to beat the game on Hard Core difficulty, which only allows you 3 saves the entire game. When you die, you go back to the last save, which might mean hours of progress. It requires a certain process of taking everything slow, and not rushing and getting your ass blown up by an organic land mine. This differs from my normal strategy in games, which is "Rush in and most likely be first to get shot." And to my surprise came when I managed to breeze through the game in 6 hours, on only 3 saves.

So, members of the Escapist, have you done something similar?

Beating Unlimited Ragna in Blazblue on my first try... I swear it was a fluke since it takes me about 15 to usually beat him.
I have literally surprised myself in minecraft by randomly building something, then forgetting about it only to stumble across it later and think it was created randomly before I remember that I made it.

single player wise, probably beating green grass and high tides on guitar expert solo for the first time. man that was fucking intense.

in multi player, whenever i get triple kills and overkills in halo always surprises me.
or accidently* get kills in CoD from across the map or through the walls.

*thats how its spelled dammit!

TF2,
getting 7 consecutive backstabs in under 10 seconds, i still haven't gotten close to breaking that record, not by a longshot

Recently in Brink, I guess my mind was just designed around that kind of strategy because I was hopping all over the place and peppering the entire team with bullets and landmines. I infiltrated their lines, defended my territory and killed each person on their team multiple times before dying once. I shed a tear for how awesome it was.

I was better than i thought at racking up skillshots and points in bulletstorm than i thought i`d be. It was like a whole different person was playing the game, especially when i racked up 1,000 points at ounce. I never knew i had it in me.

I kind of surprised myself at the end of my first playthrough of New Vegas when I found out that I had very good karma, despite wiping out Good Springs and Novac.

like if i'm just going around on COD owning people all of the time, and one day i just watch myself be a noob?

This was a very long time ago. On Final Fantasy 7 I was in the process of leveling up and getting materia to be strong enough to fight Emerald Weapon. Early into the process I went to fight him just to get a feel for how much more preparation was needed. But, I ended up beating him right then.

I was utterly amazed when I achieved a decent killstreak in Crysis 2, up to that moment I had been running around, getting killed every 24 seconds by people who apparently became friggin' veterans by playing the game for less than a month or so.

-When I was playing FFVIII, I accidentally triggered a fight against Omega (Or Ultima, whatever) Weapon near the end of the game. Now, I didn't think I'd run into that guy in there. My party was half weak and I hadn't saved in a while so I lost hope.
Then Selphie used The End and killed the guy with a single shot.
The chances of winning the battle were against me. So obviously, as soon as I won, I turned around and saved my game.

-More recently, I finished Brink in a day. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Oh, Brink is such an easy game! No feat there!". That's true, but I usually take my time with games. I finish a short game in a month, somehow. So when I caught myself finishing them game after 5 hours of gameplay, well, I was surprised and equally disappointed.

-I reached lv. 70 in multiplayer MW2 in less than a week. I still don't know how it happened.

Beating Legacy of Darkness and Lament of Innocence (3D Castlevania games)
I usually did not beat games back then. Legacy of Darkness is more surprising since I get scared easily and did it when I was like, 10. How I got past Chainsaw Frankenstien while dragging that kid around I will never understand.

I don't play fighting games very often so when I do I usually just button mash. Sometimes i'll manage to pull of an amazing combo and i'll be like "HOW THE HELL DID I DO THAT!" and spend the rest of the match trying to do it again until I inevitably lose.

Remember the spinning column of blades in the first God of War. I spent HOURS trying to climb up, and died every time. I turned the game off for the night after nearly snapping my controller.

I woke up the next morning, turned the game on, and climbed them all flawlessly on my first try.
