JK, but no. Why read the book when you have the movies and the game?

There is sooo much missing from the movie and some terrible stuff added, tbh.
As for the game, come on now those are just based on the movie.

I've read them all, Hobbit, LotR, Silmarillon & the Unfinished Tales.
Children of Hurin is just stuff from the latter book and as for the maps, no thanks. Not quite as into it as I was but if the magic is still there for you OP, have fun.

I've read The Hobbit, The Fellowship of The Ring, and The Two Towers. No real reason why I didn't read Return of The King, just never got around to it.

Have you read the Lord of the Rings books?! That's like asking me "Are you a carbon-based lifeform?", of course I've read them! Reading the Lord of the Rings is pretty much what nerds do, admitting you haven't in my social circles is a ticket to much mocking and decrying as a heretic.

I tried when I was eleven but didn't have the attention span. I love the movies and I'm aware that the movie missed out a massive amount, so do you think it'd be worth it to start reading them now?

I didn't read the LOTR books... I saw the first two movies and half of the third, and decided that I didn't like the story.

Yes I read them 14 years ago. My Father/Uncles had them at my grandparents house and I decided to read them. Great books, I read the Fellowship of the Rings twice, The Twin Towers four times, and The Return of the King once. It was always my least favorite, but The Twin Towers kicked major ass. However since I read them I can't stand watching the movies, mainly because they were missing certain parts, but also because they didn't match up with what I had pictured in my head.

Dislike Tolkien. Was forced to read the hobbit when I was 8 by the school. Then tried to get into Fellowship when movie came out. Hated it. I'm more of a stephen king guy, though his recent stuff sucked.

Yes, I have. Amazing books, although I could never finish The Silmarillion and never attempted any of the other ones.

Sometimes it felt like I was reading genealogy with a barely-cohesive plot, though.
But good books. Their legacy is huge, and for that alone they deserve admiration.

Yep, read The Hobbit a few times and read the Lord of the Rings trilogy twice. Got lovely illustrated, hardback copies of both and really enjoyed reading them. Also read The Children of Hurin last year, hard going at first but overall it was an enjoyable read. Been meaning to give The Silmarillion a go too but that seems a daunting prospect. Looking forward to reading The Hobbit to my son when he's a bit older.

No. I would have read them all, but my dad loaned our boxset to his friend who died in an accident after something related to a telephone pole fell on him. We were hardly gonna go up to his wife and ask for them back.

I've read the Silmarillion, the Hobbit, and the three Lord of the Rings books, all several times.

Parts of the Silmarillion (especially the first part) still make my head hurt.

And I understood it perfectly.

I spent the next year trying to acquire a copy of The Quinta Silmarillion. I understood that too.

They were a good series.

Been there, done that(ish).

I never got round to reading Return of the King - I read the first 2 one after the other, meant to come back to ROTK a couple of weeks later and just... Didn't.

The Silmarillion is shit, might I add. 3,000,000,000 characters and fuck all that's interesting. I think I stopped reading The Silmarillion because I was bored to tears by it, plus the stupid character count made it hard to follow.

Make a complex story by all means, don't make it complex by giving everyone virtually the same name and include characters for the sake of it. As I understand it it's critically looked down upon as well.

The Hobbit is far superior.
