In Norway we have a royal family. A king, queen and a crown prince. naturally they have no real power whatsoever, because that would be silly. But then what's the point? The whole thing is really quite strange right? I've allways liked the fact that we have a royal family but ive also had a tough time explaining why. It all dawned on me during the ski world championship the other day. It was back in Norway at last after over a decade. No other sporting event (except the winter Olympics) comes even close to being such a big deal. Our king was at the center of it all. Every winner of an event is personally congratulated by the king and his family after it's conclusion on the royal part of the stands. It's ritual that all the athletes seems to love. Maybe it makes them feel like knights or something.

The king is like a living, breathing historical artifact. A living piece of our past. And I think that's pretty awesome. Besides, what would we do with our royal palace, without a king to but in it?

Does your country have a king? what are your thoughts on royalty?

Hi there neighbour! Here in Sweden we have a king, queen and a crown princess. It's cool they don't really have any power here either but they do pull in some cash so i guess it's all good.

I'm a Dane, and I'm against the Danish Monarchy out of principle.

Regardless of how much power the monarch doesn't actually have, I find it highly undemocratic that we, in effect, have a public office that is staffed by people who are born into the job.

I'll stress that I have nothing against the people, and certainly believe that they do a very good job in the current system.

In regard to your own example, I find that any other leader-role could perform the same task, to the same effect.

Yup, England = most famous monarchy in the world.

It just wouldn't be the same without Prince Phillip and the rest o' them...

Does she count as German though now?

In the UK there's a lot of hate towards the monarchy, which just goes to show how misplaced peoples attention and intellect is. The monarchy brings a lot of money into the UK, far more than they use, so I see them as a god thing. Even better is the fact they have no real power, so it's the best of both worlds.

I wish Parliament was permanently dissolved though, and replaced by a benevolent constitutional democracy instead. A bunch of posh eton bumboys jeering at each other in a room, while being paid hundreds of thousands of pounds to do so? Burn the lot of them.

It's really all about tradition. I know it sounds lame having traditions just for the sake of it, but in Norway the king is pretty much required for certain events to feel right. Like our national day forexample. People would flip out if our kings ass was missing on the royal balcony waving to his people.

There's a lot of hate for the monarchy in England? Where i come from people don't really care enough to hate them. Honestly, they do nothing except pull in money for England and inbreed. Also, it's funny that Americans seem to honestly believe everyone in England is a good friend of the queen...

I like England having a Queen. Because it sounds cool having a monarchy, and she doesn't do anything, which means nothing drastic happens, and if it does, we can blame it on the people we vote for, and change them.

It's the exact same deal in Denmark mate.

The majority of Danes whom I have discussed the monarchy with want to keep it in place either because they like the family, or because they're conservative.

Another thing I forgot to mention earlier is that the Danish royal family doesn't have religious freedom.

I'm a devout opposition to all religion, but that's actually a rather basic right that's taken away from them right there.

I'm British, and I have to say that I like our monarchy, they provide both a link to our countries historical context and provide a useful administrative role. The various Royal programmes can be pretty awesome (Duke of Edinburgh Awards) and they create a lot of tourist revenue, although there is probably more money spent on them than produced by them, I think London would be a lot duller without them.

Seconded. The problem is that the people that are attracted to become politicians and ministers should not be allowed near those roles with a ten foot barge pole.

thats really interesting. I don't think our royal family is religious. at least they never really mention god in any speeches. (that I remeber) It's not really an issue I guess.

There's a problem with a permanently dissolved Parliament... what's going to replace it, since the House of Lords is still around... thought they're every worse than 'a bunch of posh eton bumboys'.

Personally, I'm indifferent to the Royal Family, though they are becoming increasingly English (even if via 'commoner' blood). Anyway, most royal families are at least partially German. The Duke of Edinburgh was a prince of Greece... but still (of) German (descent). The House of Hohenzollern was related to the Royal families of (until WW1): UK; Denmark (close but indirect); Greece; Belgium; Russia; the Netherlands (close but indirect again)... and now that I think on it, a German could have been installed on the throne of Spain, that was a funny episode that would have left France a bit screwed.

Were it not for WW1 and its associated post-war events, think of the regalia that Europe would be flooded with now, especially Germany, since Baden-Wurtemburg, Bavaria, Saxony, Schwerin-Mecklenburg, Oldenburg, and god-only-knows how many other states still had either Royal or Grand-Ducal households.

Friedrich III, did you have to smoke so much?!

I like the monarchy. I like that they are like a relic from the past. I do, however, not like that they do not have freedom of religion.

It wouldn't matter much to me if the royal family disappeared, but the reason I'm against removing it is that we would then have to get ourselves a president.
Who the hell made that rule? "No, you can't have just a Prime minister. If you don't want to have a King, you'll have to have a President."
"I say, fuck you, I don't want a President!"

Actually, our king does fill the purpose of giving the tabloids something to write about when nothing else is happening... kind of like the RL equivalent feeding trolls.

I know I just like to say it.
Though the Queen does have power to reject the current government and call for a new election to be held if it is felt that they are not doing their job correctly.

Ours bring in a load of money, and because one of them's getting married, we get an extra bank holiday making a 4-day weekend.

Our first king after independence from sweden was actually a danish prince. (our current kings grandfather) We no longer had any royal blood of our own. =P

all the kings since then have been pretty awesome, particapating in sports and... uhmm... standing around looking cool ^^

Ha, it's cool, just met some people recently who were trying to call for a dissolution of the monarchy based on them not being British, and it angered me. Now I have a knee jerk reaction to them being referred to as German XD
