Get rid of the monarchy I say, fed up of the taxes I pay going to someone who lives a life of absolute luxury that I can't afford, especially when other people are losing their jobs and public services are being scrap or cut back. Don't think the lack of a ruling monarch would greatly effect the tourist industry here britain, I mean it not like tourist are going to just stop visiting Buckingham Palace.

In Norway we have a royal family. A king, queen and a crown prince. naturally they have no real power whatsoever, because that would be silly. But then what's the point? The whole thing is really quite strange right? I've allways liked the fact that we have a royal family but ive also had a tough time explaining why. It all dawned on me during the ski world championship the other day. It was back in Norway at last after over a decade. No other sporting event (except the winter Olympics) comes even close to being such a big deal. Our king was at the center of it all. Every winner of an event is personally congratulated by the king and his family after it's conclusion on the royal part of the stands. It's ritual that all the athletes seems to love. Maybe it makes them feel like knights or something.

The king is like a living, breathing historical artifact. A living piece of our past. And I think that's pretty awesome. Besides, what would we do with our royal palace, without a king to but in it?

Does your country have a king? what are your thoughts on royalty?
Shouldn't this be in R&P section?

A king by it's very nature is poltical.

Seems some of my fellow Americans on here are unaware that we did, at one point, have an emperor...

oh, no... we haven't forgotten Norton. We just don't recognize his authority... because I am the only Emperor the United States has ever had!

Also, having a king is super cool... if you're playing checkers. Personally, I don't want another person to be king. That's my job... because:

That's touching on the point I was trying to make actually. Our king is more of a symbol of a part of our culture than anything else. I don't think he ever voices his personal oppinion on anything vagualy political or if he is even alowed to. And my post is mostly related to his role in sporting events, and how it makes me feel.

Here I wish Parliament was permanently dissolved though, and replaced by a benevolent constitutional democracy instead. A bunch of posh eton bumboys jeering at each other in a room, while being paid hundreds of thousands of pounds to do so? Burn the lot of them.
If you think that there isn't enough diversity in the houses of parliament you could either support candidates that aren't from this background or try to be a politician yourself.

People complain about all politicians being scum but I never see them trying to change the system for the better by doing what I suggested aboive, I don't know, maybe whinging is better than taking sensible, considered action.

Unfortunately in this country it's a very closed system. If you think that people aren't trying, you're not looking hard enough. There are plenty of wannabe politicians and students from all backgrounds and communities. The fact they can't be represented is just one of the many reasons that we need our system to change, alongside one of the reasons that it won't

Yeah, we had a pretty nice royal family but somehow it seems people don't like leaders who start world wars because of personal problems with another country.
I think it's sad, I too am a royalist and I'd really like to see them back on the throne. Not absolutism, mind you, just plain showmanship. Won't happen though.

Live in the US so we obviously don't have a king. I really don't like the idea of monarchy out of principle. Nothing makes a monarch better than anyone else besides who's cells coupled to form them. I would be much more honored to be rewarded by a president than a monarch any day.
