I haven't played the demo yet and will wait until it's out to make my decision on weather or not to buy it. If it's that bad though, then I'll just wait until it's a $20 bargain title...just like I'm doing with Bulletstorm!

More on Duke: I've only really played 3D and, 64. I tried a demo of one of the 3rd-person games (it was on the PSX...Zero Hour maybe) and really didn't like it. Long story cut short: Duke is like The Simpsons in that I remember liking it WAY more in the 90's...[sub][sub]though to be fair The Simpson's was pretty good in the early-mid naughts[/sub][/sub]

So it's down to rental status now?
got see how the actual game turns out. this demo is an old make, so there is no telling what might be different in the full game, and even though i did not live up to the name, it still seems better then most of the crap out there anyway :/

I was disappointed in the two-weapons-only style of gameplay, limiting the schaudenfreude that has fueled Duke for so long; it's not just crude jokes and nudity, but enormous levels of violence. Being restricted to two weapons made me unwilling to experiment, and I agree that the healthbar is far too short and Duke is far too weak on normal mode. Enemies hit hard and accurately, Duke can't even push a cart up a gentle slope if it has some seemingly empty barrels in it and he gets utterly shitfaced off of one beer! We're supposed to believe that this is the unstoppable badass that Earth needs? A sad case of the mechanics not agreeing with the story.

The first sign that I had that it was going to be crap was all the advertising. If you don't know, watch ZP's Dante's Inferno review.

At this point I think they're trying to get as many people to buy it out the door based on the idea "It's finally HERE!" Never mind that the team has only been working on it for a couple months.

This is also why they're so keen on controversy: It's free advertising.

My prediction now is the game is going to be terrible, but will still have been worth the crappy release because so many people will pre-order it.

This...THIS is why we need to stop pre-ordering, people.

Called it. But imagine if this is just ruse to mask the actual game which is everything that was hyped up.

I hope all these haters did their research and found out that the demo is the over 8 months old PAX demo. Gearbox has already said the full game has tons of improvements that the demo doesnt have.

Also who the fudge actually bases a game off the demo. Demos are always trash with 50% of the features missing. After playing PC games for over 15 years I cant remember one demo that didn't make me almost not buy the game.
Then why would they release a demo that's 8 months old featuring stuff that they know is changed, a demo is supposed to get you hyped for the real thing, let you try it out and see if you'll like it, if what you are saying is true then the PR department at Gearbox is being run by a rock
It seems like it might be. I mean, promising a demo eight months ago and then providing an outdated tech demo a week before release. . .? Pretty weak. Hopefully, they've sunk the time they didn't use to prep a proper demo into readying the final product.

Guess I made the right call pre-ordering Alice: Madness Returns instead.
Ooh, bad news on that front.

This isn't that surprising. What's funny is that while everyone is irate about the troubled record of DNF, not many of the people professing to be excited about Alice seem to be aware that it's designed by American McGee--who, since a handful of Doom II levels and the first Alice (which had its fair share of problems, if I recall) has given us Scrapland, Bad Day L.A., and Grimm--all mediocre titles. Now do we understand why his name isn't attached to the title of this project?

I hope when the actual game comes out people will come back to this thread or make another thread to talk about it. I want to listen to the critics and other people before I even think about opening the game up.

Well. I didnt want to believe all the complaints. But now I do. just played it and FUCK THAT.

I couldnt even try to play with the shink gun cause duke dies in 1/2 a second. Even the shunken baddies kill you and then dont do anyhting but chip damage but Duke is grunting and moving backwards with the screen flashing red making it difficult to do anything. Regular baddies killed me to the point where the only strategy was pop out regen crap.

This is bullshit. Being old doesnt change the fact that the mechanics are all new trendy crap.

GGRRRRRR.

Will not but unless a mod community fixes this shit.

Good thing I'm getting it for the weird story and art style, not the gameplay. Just like the first one. :)

Besides it's just one review. Others might have something different to say.

Based on what I saw from "WTF is Duke Nukem Forever (Demo)", I have to say that after playing the Doom demo myself and having my mind blown from being able to move ridiculously fast in all directions with a bunch of weapons that I am really pissed about one directional sprint in a Duke game. Seriously, why do we have to have a fucking sprint button in every FPS these days? What's wrong with strafing? Was it too awesome when COD came along so Developers everywhere had to crap all over some that worked and was fun?

As for the two weapon system, fuck you. Seriously, go die in a hole. Four weapons would have been fine if they were mapped to the D pad, there's no reason to force us to pick only two weapons in a game with a crap ton of variety. What is currently mapped to the Dpad anyway, Duke Vision?

Hmm, Well I liked it, I laughed, enjoyed the gameplay, I didn't expected that much, and seriously just what did you expected? the Second Coming?
Yeah the thing with the health and being limited to only two weapons is a bit of disappointment but I got around it.
It's stupid fun and I enjoyed it.

Instead of taking the turd that came out of the whole thing and trying to update it with modern graphics they should have just scrapped the entire thing and started from scratch.
Uh, they did that. Like literally 4 or 5 times over the course of the development cycle.
3D Realms kept changing engines as they came out.

Equipment, actually. Steroids, jetpack and holoduke, I think.

As for me, I had fun with it. It wasn't the second coming of duke, but let's face it, we set the hype bar pretty damned high.

Halo gameplay? Perhaps. But the crucial duke style is still there. People forget how much duke has changed over the years. 2D, 3D, 2.5D, side scroller, fps, third person shooter. Is it really surprising we have a duke styled version of modern shooters? Yes, cover was in use, but I felt pretty badass loading my shotgun from behind a rock then popping out, running along shotgunning pig cops as I go, not letting em get a scratch on me.

But I see how people got annoyed. I get it, you expected duke nukem 3D 2, and you got halo: duke takes on the covenant, but for some, that seems like a pretty cool proposition. To all those reading this thread and cancelling plans to buy, pre order it first if you can, i urge you to get the demo, and try it for yourself before making your decision, because if nothing else, DNF is gonna split opinions like an abortion clinic in a quiet American suburb.

And please, if you plan on getting Alice, look into it. I was planning to, but seeming as they've limited review privileges to an untrustworthy official magazine, I feel somewhat worried about it, with clues pointing to a technical mess but no way to confirm or deny it.

Eh, I got no defense for the game. I'm not getting it so I can have the next greatest FPS.

I'm getting it because I'm witnessing hilarious gaming history. 15 year development cycle is at an end, finally...for a game like Duke Nukem Forever. There's no way I'm not buying this game day one.

If I canceled my pre-order every time I was disappointed with the demo I wouldn't have half the games I have, and I would miss out on a lot. Demo doesn't mean anything to me.
