I've got two rifles, it's just that the controls on ownership (and ammunition in particular) are a lot tighter in the uk.
Its that difference in attitude, a gun is a tool and its use privilege to be earned. Not a right.

Up until surprisingly recently yes. Lot of gun laws in the Jim Crow South were enacted specifically to prevent blacks and other undesirables from purchasing firearms to defend themselves from lynch mobs and Klan shootings; which, by the way, came to an end from the actions of people like Robert Wiliams [http://www.afrocubaweb.com/rwill.htm] and the folks at Hayes Pond [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hayes_Pond]. The 1968 gun laws were written largely in response to black militarism, and before that the New York Sullivan Act was implemented to assure all them foriegn anarchists wouldn't bring greif to Tammany Hall.
