I really like Metal, but this constant search for "Heavy", "Metal" and "Brutality" is missing the point completely. Sure they may be intrinsic elements of the genre, but that's not the point of metal, like all music, it should tell a story, have meaning and value beyond the simplistic meanings of "Brutality".
I agree to an extent, but let the people find their limits. All the longtime metalheads I know wanted something harder, faster, and heavier at one point. Most of them find out somewhere around grindcore or death/black metal that a lot of the slower stuff they started on has more lasting appeal for them.

There are extreme bands that have meaning, and tell stories. I can understand not really seeing that, as the vast majority doesn't care what their lyrical themes are as long as the bass drum is pounding, but don't let fool you. Well rounded musicians exist in extreme metal. I'm not really going to address your point on telling a story, as many albums/songs in extreme metal do. If you want a GOOD story, you may want to try more progressive stuff like Ayreon/Avantasia/Opeth.

OT: I could search for the most abrasive electronic music I could find and link to it. I won't, however, as it's clear that's not what you actually want.

Electric Wizard has already been posted, and is a fantastic band with a heavy sound to 'em.
Bathory are first wave black metal, and quite fun to listen to.
Cynic is amazing. Altogether amazing. For brutality, their first album (Focus)is what you'd want.
Athiest is like focus-era Cynic, but in my opinion slightly heavier with slightly more awesome bass.
Death. Listen to them
Skeltonwich are great. I'm just discovering them, as I get to see them at a festival on saturday.
Slayer. Testament. Kreator. Thrash metal at it's heaviest.
Napalm Death and Dying Fetus are great grindcore. I'd recommend having an album on hand for impromptu headbaning.
The Agonist is the only metalcore band I've ever liked very much. Having recently seen them, I can officially say their guitarist is good at sweep picking. Really good.
Amorphis are great. I'd go into more detail, but I doubt anybody is actually going to real this far into the post.

I think I'll stop typing now.
Read above post. Also nice avatar.

Well I don't go for neutron-star-level heavy metal, but my pick for the heaviest album I bought this decade is probably Come Clarity by In Flames. Never heard of them? I mean these guys:

Personally, if I were recommending In flames I'd go with the older stuff, which I think is far, far superior. I'm not trying to say it's better one way or the other, just that if people hear the new stuff and don't like it, they could easily miss out on what I consider the best melodic death metal ever.
[small]Exact same thing for soilwork too...[/small]
well said.
also as far as heaviest album goes i'd just assume it was some underground death metal band. but seriously what happened to in flames, they used to be gods.

Ok guys I fixed the title now please understand. Obviously I don't mean heaviest as the uber death metal band that makes no sense and is impossible to understand. Just a metal word for good. (happy face)

Still Life by Opeth. Damn that was one hell of an album.

Also it's nice to see InFlames being mentioned a lot.

Probably the last Bloodbath album. Or the second one. Or the first.

Go listen to some Bloodbath.

In other news, I resent you calling Whitechapel shit.
Same here. I'd kill to go see Whitechapel live.

My suggestion would be anything from Between the Buried and Me. Right now, they're one of my favorite bands.

I didn't call Whitechapel shit. I called there vocalist shit. It just isn't for me, but really I think they should try a little harder on the lyrics.

Although they're more of a hardcore thrash band, I found 'Oceano - Depths' to be about the best metal album of the last year:

But (albeit, they aren't 'heavy') I'd say that 'Korpiklaani - Tales Along this Road' is my personal favorite metal album of the last decade. It is incredibly composed as an album and not just a random collection of excuses to mosh (plus you can actually dance to most of the songs which is rare in metal).

If you really just want 'Heavy', though, go buy whatever Cannibal Corpse's last album was and turn your equalizer's lower hz sliders all the way up and you'll get the effect.

I first heard of the Locust when they opened for Andrew WK. In protest of the ticket prices they played crazy static for 30 minutes and started a konga line. the only word I can use to describe them is 'absurd'.
That's seriously the most awesome thing I've heard all day.

Well, if you mean from the last decade, id have to go with Either Machine Head's 'The Blackening' or Lamb of God's 'Ashes of the Wake'.
Overall though, for me it's gonna have to be (metallica's) 'Ride the Lightening', i love every single one of those songs to pieces.
