If you like classical music, then I'd suggest Richard Wagner, or any Wagnerian music (such as Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings scores)

dubstep might be the closest electronic style sticking to the spirit of metal without getting into the ridiculous BPM ramping of oldschool hardcore

I would say certain types of hardcore techno:

Not necessarily the "heaviest" although determining what "heavy" is is not an exact science. Speed? Tone? How fast it makes people run? Regardless, the above are a couple of my faves but most of it is pretty hard to find, even on youtube, but once you find one or 2 you'll probably find more in the selected links.

I would propose listening to the something by Richard Wagner.
His works will blow your ears clean off and then some.
One post in and we already have a /thread.

I'd also recommend OSTs, they can and quite often do get pretty heavy.

Probably not the best example:

Though sometimes Classical music directly affects the formation of soundtracks themselves- particularly John Williams ones.

For example- here's the piece that the Jaws theme was lifted from:

Drum'n'base?
(although I might be biased since I really like Pendulum)

Also whatever Nine Inch Nails and Tool does (I don't think it can be categorized as metal)
(hey, nobody said that lyrics couldn't be heavy, instead of music)

Nowhere near as 'heavy' as most of the other tracks posted in here, but I like it.

Hardcore punk, t'aint metal. Although I find it hard to imagine there are many people that like it and don't like at least some metal.
Agreed! It can get pretty bonkers and caustic. I find one of the most interesting periods to be in the early 80's, after the first wave of punk rock had launched and less clear ideas of what it was had become expected (see SWANS in my first post).

Amebix is a great example of heavy, crazy, crusty punk rock. I really like their stuff.
You have excellent taste :D. It's also worth pointing out that amebix were the first band signed to alternative tentacles.

Props for those Swans and Stapleton additions there :) NWW usually comes to mind for me when I think heavy, especially his earliest dark ambient works. Seeing some Merzbow here and there as well, which is great :)

Now I don't know -exactly- what you mean by heavy, but I'll give my best interpretation. Since there's a lot of electronic musicians here already, Venetian Snares usually comes to mind:

Such an experience to let yourself get pounded by these tracks :)

If I had to recommend anything it would be from my favourite genre 'hardcore' which I don't class as metal, but most people do. Anything by Antagonist A.D. a New Zealand band that are my favourite and do some amazing things for hardcore music. If I had to recommend something that wasn't a guitar driven 'heavy' music, some electronica from Otto Von Schirach. Some of his beats are just deadly.

Delain, I suppose. Some may consider them Gothic Metal, I consider them Gothic Rock. They're like Evanescence, but better in every way imaginable.

Page 2 and no-one has cracked an Adele joke? I'm not sure if I'm upset or impressed.
