I seem to be the odd one out among my friends seeing as I'm the only one there that enjoys heavy metal so I wanted to find out from the Escapist community what they thought about it.
Are you someone like me? or are you someone who hates it.
I would also prefer it if the people that hate it could also give us an explanation for their dislike of heavy metal.

Uh...there's a lot of people here who like metal.

I don't mind it, but I don't like "screamo" at all.

On this forum, are you joking!?

Anyway, I don't mind it personally, maybe not my preferred style of music, but I won't switch it of.

On this forum metalheads are everywhere. If you're going to start yet another "why all the hate" thread, you should at least try and start one about something that is actually hated by a reasonably sizeable portion of the community. Heavy metal certainly isn't it.

Simple. If all of your friends hate all kinds of metal, you have dumb friends.

I personally dislike heavy metal and metal in general (is there a difference?) intensely. It's just not my thing; I couldn't tell you why really. I just enjoy the sound of lighter, soothing indie/alternative/folk/pop rock a lot more.

On the internet, metalheads are everywhere, but IRL, we're few and far between.
In my experience the dislike comes from people saying the music is "just noise." Well that simply because their ears haven't adjusted to the music. Perfect example (I'm guessing most people here don't listen to Emperor) listen to an Emperor song, even if you listen to metal, even black metal, it will initially sound like noise, after a while, however, you'll adjust and be able to notice the layers and complexities of it. It's just like that, only with all bands.

I like heavy metal just fine. I just hate vocalists that screech and growl. This is why I rather like Kamelot (when Roy Khan sings with his godly voice; Mark Vanderbilt's voice is concentrated shit).

I can take or leave the over the top instrumentals in metal, hence my appreciation for Dragonforce, but I can't stand the screamo 'singing' and would turn it off if I heard it. Whatever style of music you play, you should at least have decent vocals.

You are my hero I think. Kamelot is currently my favourite band

I think it's interesting when the screeching and growling is melodic though. Like Sirenia, Tristiana, and a few other Melodic Metal bands.

Don't like it as much as I used too, it hasn't really stuck with me. I'm not a fan of the screaming either it always sounds like the vocalist is straining their voice and not really singing.

Most of it sounds exactly the same to me. It's boring, and the screaming/growling just sounds ridiculous, like a eight year old trying to make monster noises.

Well, if it is ingested or inhaled, it tends to be quite fatal...

OH, you mean the music.

I guess it just isn't my type of music, and it probably never will be. I just leave it at that...

You know, I actually found that it depends on the age and groups of the people you surround yourself with. It's very odd. In high school I knew about 3 metalheads? 5 maximum. As I grew up I kept finding more and more. About 1/3 of my class is a metalhead in college and more than half listens to some songs.

Granted, it's a computer interested crowd and there seem to be a large amount of metalheads populating it.

I personally like it. I listen to classical rock, hard rock, heavy metal, classical metal, blues rock...If I like it, I listen to it without caring for the label.

I'm only really into doom/sludge/stoner/whateverthefuckyouwannacallit metal. Can't stand any of the faster stuff. I have hardcore punk for that.

Still, I would class bands like Electric Wizard, Acid King, Bongzilla in my top 10 favourite bands.

I live by one rule when it comes to Metal. If the cover design isn't some f***ing undead thing with glam rock hair holding a guitar and standing on some nordic looking mountain as it calls out to the gods of thunder ect ect. Then I'll give it a chance.
Its a fact that Metal of most genres try too hard with the album cover and it just makes me role my eyes.
I'm sorry to say I hate Iron Maiden for that alone. They dont even sound like should be having zombies with battle axes or whatever on their album covers.
I love the Metal but it should be a damn powerful stuff!

Metal used to be all I listened to.

Symphonic metal specifically. Nightwish, Kamelot, Epica, etc.

Then I grew up.

Now, I like damn near anything (my iPod is ridiculously schizophrenic. I put it on shuffle and piss off my friends). Progressive rock/metal has sort of become my go to genre, with bands like Dream Theater, Hourglass, and Closure in Moscow. But I still have every Nightwish album on there (even Dark Passion Play, despite how depressed it can make me), every Kamelot album (with Khan), and every Epica album.

So metal isn't my only genre anymore, but its still my tried and true.

EDIT: Also, I wasn't trying to say that liking metal has anything to do with not being mature, or grown. I have a feeling that comment might rub some people the wrong way.
