Hello America, one question. Why do you ruin all your best television shows?

Here's a return question, why do you care what America does with its own Television shows? no one's forcing you to watch.
Because like many things I love, I hate to see my favourite shows turn into something terrible.

In my opinion a show should have a length of 5 seasons max unless it is a sitcom which should not push more that 3. Why? Because shows get stale. Now, after the 5 year run is up why not take a break from the show, air some original content, and revamp it a few years later. That way it there is room for change, and it does not turn into a CSI.

Here in Britian, shows like Fawlty Towers and Blackadder, while very popular, only ran for 2 and 4 series respectively.
Fawlty Towers only had 12 episodes total.

But in deference to your claim:
12 episodes, yes, but it was split into 2 season.
Also, I agree, House is the best thing on American TV at the moment.
It's probably the British guy playing an American asshole that makes it so good.
I'll always remember Hugh Laurie as this guy...

in america they run until viewing figure drops or the figurehead talent walks away. but even scrubs was bled for a while when the latter happened.
And then when that finished they decided to go for one more season, this time, cutting 90% of the original cast and introducing new characters that nobody liked.
Don't mention the wicked ones name! Never speak the name of season nine!
Why? What could possibly hap-OH MY GOD! WHY IS MY FACE OF FIRE! ARE THESE... ARE THESE MY EYES!?

Because we have good television shows to ruin.
I don't know wether that was some kind of passive-agressive dig at TV outside of America, so let me assure you. There are plenty of great shows outside of America, hell, a lot of the Canadian and American members here on the escapist can atest to the quality of British TV alone.
And I can tell you that I liked the last season of Scrubs, that doesn't make it good, see? People have different tastes. I DESPISE WITH AN UNDYING FURY Dr. Who. But some, well maybe everyone else, will say that the show is great. Also, I don't like the recent trend of "What do Americans ruin x", when it just so happens we don't have any control over what goes on behind the scenes with movies, television, comics, books, or box art. My general ***** is that I don't take kindly to my country being summed up into the opinions of TV executives or the like, because I don't consider everyone in the UK to be Simon Cowell.

It's a common courtesy that I extend to all peoples of the earth (not judging them based on their biggest players, so to speak) that I seldom get back from people from other countries.

So let me tell the Escapist: America is not Alabama, We're not all George Bush, and we don't all read Twilight/LOTR/etc, nor did we consider Expelled: No Intelligence allowed the greatest movie on the face of the Earth. The vast majority of us hate guns, which is why the minority of us keep them, and we don't like the Wars either.

That is all.

As far as I can gather, US TV tends to be produced by large teams of writers, who might leave and get replaced, the show carrying on all the way to death. In the UK, shows tend to be written by one or two people, and once those people move on to other projects, the show is over (not always; Rob Grant left Red Dwarf after six seasons, and it's been going on and off since then, with a ninth and tenth season apparently in the works).

Well, Lost and Chuck are my two favourite shows from the States, and Lost was given a definitive ending midway through season 3, and I believe Chuck is on it's last season also (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!).
I'm not sure Chuck is on it's last season. It's always been a bubble show, and there's certainly the chance that it won't get renewed, but the creators and writers don't want it to end and will try and get it keep it going. It'll probably be announced in May whether it's canceled or not.

OT: One possible explanation, I think, is that once a show achieves a certain level of success then the creators aren't really interfered with as much, in terms of what they can and cannot do. And sometimes I think this actually hurts a show and the lack of an editor really shows.

Well, for shows to lose their flavour is not exclusive to American shows. Look at East Enders and Coronation Street. They might actually be the worst and longest running TV shows I know.

You know why? Because Fox network is a total D-Bag and cancels all the best shows to make way for some ditzy reality series.

Well, not to rude, but you could aways stop caring. I hated the road the Original (birtish) office went so instead of watching a train wreck, I just stopped watching. The Simpsons now are more background noise then anything, and thats just out of habit and htere not being much else on at that time Sunday.

Besides, do you really thinkg any show can go the lenght that the ones you listed do and still be fresh? America may be the wosrst offender, but thats cause we understand how business, entertainment, and our audience work. They get they're in it for profit. I highly doubt anyone in any country (company wise) can really salvage any of the shows that you have a problem with.

I meant as in a planned end by the writers - nothing official yet, but that seems to be some of the buzz at the minute.

I mean, if you look at how far the characters have gone since the first season then you do have to wonder where they'd be able to take them next. I'd rather it finished great then drive itself into the gutter because it's just run of ideas.

I would like to point out that as terrible as American TV is, there's one show we came up with that will probably be immortally entertaining, which is AFV. People and animals doing stupid things is a source of comedy that will never run dry.

I don't think it's so much the writers but the networks who keep these shows going long past their expiry dates. Networks see a cash cow and they milk it. I'm sure the original Simpsons writers would have pulled the plug long ago if they could.

I think the problem with a couple of the series you mentioned is that they weren't allowed to die. It's no coincidence that it was an American series that coined the term "Jump the Shark." Rather than laying a franchise to rest and moving onto the next big thing, American producers will keep milking it for money until we flat out beg for the death of the franchise. I think George Lucas works (Indiana Jones and Star Wars) and The Simpsons represent this best, but they are hardly the only examples.

Still, with series like House and Breaking Bad, you occasionally get some real masterpieces. But note that with both of those shows the main characters are hardly heroic. I think it's ironic that America does anti-heroes and criminals best but tries to make these heroic badasses and happy families who make you want to give a blowjob to a Desert Eagle. Normally i like irony, but i know several failed writers who could have made great series who were rejected because they didn't do a happy series and because it was more realistic and didn't have the same stupid angst of most dramas. It pisses me off.

I apologise if this post has turned into my own personal rant but...

Only Fools and Horses lasted 9 years and had Christmas specials for 8 years after that
Doctor Who originally (before the 2005 relaunch) ran for 26 years
Last of the Summer Wine lasted 37 Years

Now I'm not saying these show didn't have there moments however, they did go downhill.

Only Fools wasn't run into the ground but it did get worse and was greatly improved from the switch from a series to Christmas specials
Watch an old series of Doctor Who and you will see why it was cancelled.
Last of the Summer Wine should have ended after Compo (Bill Owen) died and it would have still have run for 26 years.

Proffesional wrestling was ruined when they went for a PG-13 rating to be family friendly. The Rock and Stone Cold were the highlight of the WWF because they could be so family unfriendly with The Rock's love of a very particular kind of pie and Stone Cold Steven Austin's constant middle fingers. Now we just have John Cena and Edge and there's no blood, not as many hardcore matches, the ECW is gone (and they stopped being good when they stopped lighting tables on fire and using barbed wire). The WWE NEEDS to go back to the funny violent stuff. Quit trying to appeal to kids, it takes all the fun out of it for us adults. Also please please please please OVER 9000 times get some female wrestlers who can actually wrestle and aren't just there for sex appeal. WCW understood that, Mona being one my all time favorites. Needs more Chyna and Lita, girls who are athletic and not just nice to look at.

The Simpsons dips from episode to episode, not season to season.

If only Britain had a show that was as consistently liberal...
