Hello America, one question. Why do you ruin all your best television shows?

This isn't to say America is the only offender, but it's certainly the worst by far

Here in Britian, shows like Fawlty Towers and Blackadder, while very popular, only ran for 2 and 4 series respectively.
I apologise if this post has turned into my own personal rant but...

Only Fools and Horses lasted 9 years and had Christmas specials for 8 years after that
Doctor Who originally (before the 2005 relaunch) ran for 26 years
Last of the Summer Wine lasted 37 Years

Now I'm not saying these show didn't have there moments however, they did go downhill.

Only Fools wasn't run into the ground but it did get worse and was greatly improved from the switch from a series to Christmas specials
Watch an old series of Doctor Who and you will see why it was cancelled.
Last of the Summer Wine should have ended after Compo (Bill Owen) died and it would have still have run for 26 years.
You probably used the best examples of why it isn't just American TV that can run way past its prime, and I agree, those shows should have died long before they did.

This is why I liked The Walking Dead. I wasn't that keen to see it (zombies have been done to death lately) but when I heard there were only 6 episodes I knew it would be well-paced and there would be tight character arcs and basically - shit would happen. Now I hear it was popular so there's going to be a second season - with at least 13 episodes. And you know it won't stop there.

See the BBC's 1981 six part Triffids series for how to do it right. i.e. End after 6 episodes.

I mean I wouldn't mind another two seasons of The Walking Dead but only if they were 6 episodes long. 13 is just going to kill it for me as I know they'll be stretching things out for the sake of it.

Hey.

HEY.

We got Fringe. That's enough for me.
Oh, God. I used to love that show so damn much. Seriously, for a while it was my favorite show on the air. But then JJ Abrams had to swoop in with his STUPID FUCKING ROMANTIC CLICHES and ruin it.

It turns out the fate of the fucking universes depends on which Olivia Peter chooses. So the fate of the Universe(s) is being decided by a stupid, out-of-place romantic cliche. Did I mention how FUCKING stupid that was?

Seriously: YOU HAVE REALLY GOOD IDEAS, FRINGE. STOP FUCKING THEM UP.

Now I understand that popular shows make a lot of money and it's for that reason that they keep going
That's it. That's your reason. Here in 'merica, money drives everything. Occasionally, some creators limit their work before it's quality declines (e.g., Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes) but those people are few and far between, and it has a lot to do with the social culture of our country. Our country hasn't quite entered the postmaterialist stage of development yet, so our values are focused more on making a living than on doing so honorably and honestly.

Dexter season 5 hasnt been that good either.

Lets hope Breaking Bad wont suffer the same fate.
Breaking bad already has a set time of execution. They already have the story arc planned out, and have said many times that they will end the show, regardless of whether we want more or not.

AMC, I love you.
I am very glad to hear that do you by any chance know how many season they will make? I am sure that Season 4 is coming checking IMDB says they are almost started with filming for S4. However I do not know if that will be the last season or if there will be a season 5.

I could see a Season 5 happening but more then that will probably ruin the show for me. Even though it just seems keep getting better. "The bigger they are the harder they fall"
They never gave the timeline, they just talked about the story.

Specifically, they were talking about how awesome AMC was, because they basically had no part in making Breaking Bad. They just gave the show a handful of money and said 'Go Nuts.' AMC apparently lets the director and writer do the show, and AMC just handles commercials.

It is suggested that Season 5-6 may be the end, not by number, but by overview. The director says himself that they can't keep a cancer riddled meth dealer going forever.

My guess?

1- The beginning
2- Destroyed the meth trade. Took over.
3- Personal life degrades as criminal life skyrockets (Have not watched season 3 yet, do not ruin please. This is just my guess)
4- Power grows to zenith. Season finale has cancer come back/he gets caught
5-Spirals out of control, series finale is crash of epic proportion.

Just my guess.

I wouldnt want to spoil anything but that assumption is pretty good. Its the best season so far you should watch it.

This is funny because you said, Best. and. Television in the same sentence.
Because there's never anything good on TV, right?

I'd agree that 90% of it is crap, but there is some genuinely good stuff on it.

Nah we've run a few series into the ground ourselves. America just gets aired more than our own TV shows. And they don't have the uber soaps that we do. Eastenders and Coronation Street have been going for longer than I've been alive.

The good American shows don't get shown as much as the popular ones do. That's not to say the popular ones aren't also good, but you'll stop laughing at a joke the 50th time you've heard it. Some great unsung shows like Frasier, went on for ages just under the radar, and still kept their quality. Just look at MASH, or ER... both very long running shows that kept their quality all the way through. Actually MASH only got better in the later seasons.

And as for British shows that just won't seem to die in a fire... Big Brother.

I apologise to the rest of the world on behalf of Britain for that show. We're so very sorry.

For every 200 hours of crap there's about 2 hours of something good. I love house and old Cartoon Network cartoons, That's about it.

EDIT: This was supposed to be a reply =(

MASH is a great example, but it certainly changed towards the end. The first few season were hilarious but still managed to get its message across that war sucks. The latter seasons, while still very good, were a lot more serious in tone and the humour began to suffer for it. Still one of the best shows of all time though.

Hell if I know, I don't really pay attention to a lot of shit that goes down in my own country. The only time I notice a TV show getting ruined is if I'm a fan of said show. You owe me for ruining Heroes, America.

I love Scrubs with a passion, and other than the major changes for season nine, I've found no discernable variance in quality between seasons.

The more said about Scrubs, the better.

Its because the studios are stuck for ideas when it comes to new concepts for TV shows which is why we're seeing alot of (quite unsuccessful) american knock-offs of foreign TV shows which are only successful in their own countries because it caters to their culture.

What really pisses me off is mainstream. People have to convince studio exec's that their concept is worth the money & it usually rejected because its too obscure or its taken aboard but watered down for the general public. TV shows with really deep & complex plots dont last all that long when they're still good for a few more season. And when they finally get the axe several seasons worth plot points & build up are crammed into the final season giving it a rush-job finish that leaves viewers unsatisfied.

The two major examples are Battlestar Galactica & Lost. Twin Peaks unfortunately was good for another season & the ending was a huge cliff hanger but atleast they still covered the major plot & most loose ends, however thats a rarity these days.
