Hello America, one question. Why do you ruin all your best television shows?

So, it has come to my attention that many American TV shows are run into the ground. Series such as Scrubs, Two and a Half Men, the Simpsons and CSI(just to name a few) were great shows, but after several series they've all gone down hill, and by down hill I mean fell off a cliff.

This isn't to say America is the only offender, but it's certainly the worst by far. So while truly great and original shows like Futurama and Firefly get cancelled (although I hear Futurama is coming back), Two and a Half men, which was great to begin with, has long stopped being funny, yet it continues to run, and the less said about Scrubs, the better.

Now I understand that popular shows make a lot of money and it's for that reason that they keep going for as long as they do, but don't the writers want their shows to be remembered for being great? Not 'that one show that started great and then was pretty shit for several years'.

Here in Britian, shows like Fawlty Towers and Blackadder, while very popular, only ran for 2 and 4 series respectively. You can gurantee that if any of those two shows were to suddenly return with a new season, their ratings would soar. But they won't return any time soon, for one reason. The writers don't want to write a new series for the sake of writing a new series, they want their work to be just as funny as it's always been, not churning out some forced plot just for the sake of it.

It's certainly the safe option, milking a series for all it's worth (let's not forget how guilty the video game industry is that), but it saddens me to see so many good shows(say what you want about America, but they have some damn good TV shows) die, when they could have finished with a bang and always be remembered as a great series.

So, fellow escapist, what are your thoughts on the matter?

Because TV executives realize that if you want the maximum Nielsen ratings, you need to cater to the lowest common denominator.

I haven't dedicated any time to a series on TV in over 7 years; everything sucks now.

The last series that held my attention for any amount of time was the first season of House, though I watched that retrospectively on DVD.

I read this as our best series, so I thought it would be a complaining thread about things like life on mars and top gear.

people just run out of ideas. Americans produces a lot of television shows, so maybe that would explain the amount. I'm sure it is more complex than that, things like funding and talent, but it is too late to talk about such things. British shows, at least from what I've seen, are much more self-sustained than their American counterparts.

P.S. Futurama is back, new episodes have been out since last summer

Cause once something starts to make money, the excutives dont want to change it for fear of losing that money maker. On the other hand, when they do change things up, (cough cough Stargate Universe) they can ruin it.

I wouldn't blame that one on the writers, they are not really left with much choice if the producers demand more scripts. Either obey or get fired.

But I agree, sometimes the long running shows tend to be really annoying because there is just so much repetitive stuff going on for the sake of filling time.

Once a series gets over 7 seasons, it usually sucks anyway. Exception: Friends. Anyone else remember Friends? It was a great show that lasted for 10 great seasons.

Also Futurama has been back a while. Just saying.

Well, Lost and Chuck are my two favourite shows from the States, and Lost was given a definitive ending midway through season 3, and I believe Chuck is on it's last season also (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!).

But I agree with you, it goes out of control. Not to mention that our shows typically have something like 6 episodes to a series, where an American season is usually double that at least.

I'd just like to point out: Red Dwarf. 8 fucking seasons, and the last 2 or 3 were pretty bad. However, I guess you're right that generally it's American shows that run for years, long after they've started to suck. Just a money thing, I guess.

We keep rolling with whatever makes money, keeping it up until we can find something equally profitable to take its place. We have a lot of misses in regards to popular shows, but when a network finds that one really good show that everyone loves, they milk [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivor_%28TV_series%29] it [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSI:_Crime_Scene_Investigation] dry [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_%28TV_series%29].

Because successful franchises are successful, and to greedy TV producers success and money win out over quality and artistic vision every time.

Here is their thinking: "Got a great show that's wildly successful, but the characters and stories are getting stale? Too bad! Keep making more. More. MOAR!!! Doesn't matter how, JUST KEEP DOING IT!"

Unless it's something like Lost where there is one, overarching plot and a finite ending that was decided on from the start, the producers get to decide when it ends.

You pretty much answered your own question. And it pisses us off too when we see great shows that started off good run into the ground instead of being finished while they still retain some dignity. (The only other show that I can think of would be Simpsons, which imo is the worst offender of this)

in america they run until viewing figure drops or the figurehead talent walks away. but even scrubs was bled for a while when the latter happened.

Definately agree with Friends. That was bloody great all the way through, but they also did the horrible spin-off, Joey.

Once something gets well established, the fans will accept more, even if it's not very good.

It's not just TV shows, look at movie franchises.
