Normally I cant stand to watch anime, its just not my thing. What I have encountered is mostly about teenagers being loud, whacky and annoying while doing incredulous things and normally I turn away whenever exposed to somthing.
But recently I stumbled across hHellsing, and my god its awesome. The English translation is awesome and doesn't sound like some failed street performer, the characters are interesting and act like you would expect them too (None of this holier than thou crap you see in cartoons all the time now) and the storyline is actually interesting and doesnt strain the bounds of the universe its set in.
The fact thats its alot more adult orintated helps as well. One thing that has always put me off Anime is the childishness of it all. I find it alot easier to watch when the GOOD guys aren't constantly pulling victory from their arses because they are the GOOD guys.

The only problem is I enjoyed it so much I watched all 13 episodes over 2 evenings and am now wanting more. There are so many unanwsered questions but there seems to be no hope of a season 2. I am currently working my way though the Ultimate edition OVA's but its not as to my liking with the animation lapsing into more childish expressions and actions (especially around Seras), but I am still enjoying it immensly.
The whole point of this thread is that after I get though the Ultimate collection I feel I will give some more anime a try, any recomendations?

Watch the OVAS, they are much better... Since they are also longest then the episodes of the manga then this should give you another 3 nights of vampire badassness(I think i just invent a word)

And don't wait till a second season... I think this not gonna to happen, with the Ultimate and everything.

The wackiness is kinda closer to the manga, and I personally quite like it. But each to his own. You may want to try looking at Cowboy Bebop.

You should totally try Cowboy Bebop. The voice acting is brilliant, the characters are cool and there's none of that epic battle between good vs evil crap. It's just good fun.

Berserk, Elfen Lied, Black Lagoon, and Monster might be worth checking out for you.

Hmm I didn't like hellsing too much; the english girls voice was horribe, the ending didn't make much sense and the boss woman looked like a guy (Pegasus from Yu-Gi-Oh!) Cowboy Bebop as suggested above isn't as silly as some of them can be but I personally recommend watching Death Note. It's truly amazing with an immense storyline, definitely one of my favourite anime shows of all time.

Cowboy Bebop, the dub is great as well as being a great story. Theres a teenager in it but she's actually fairly interesting. Not too mention agreat mixture of fluid animations, great music, and a bunch of fun vinegrettes with only a few plot episodes. Also great.

Gurren Lagann if you like giant robots. It's first half is extremely fun and epic with the second retaining some of the comedy but becoming deeper and getting even more epic. Mix in deep symbolism and good music and you have an anime you will be quoting your entire life whenever you see a drill.

Trigun, it's funny, greatly creative, and containing a good breakdown of pacifism and nihlism. The artstyle is gritty, as well as the fun noise music. It feels at times like an anime'd western movie. Really a good watch.

Now all of these have good dubs, Gurren Lagann isn't perfect but the other two are great examples.

There are hundreds of adult animes. I could never get into hellsing because the animation is pretty poor compared to others and I didn't like any of the characters.

I'd really recommend Cowboy Bebop like other people in this thread and also Samurai Champloo (by the same makers as Bebop). But what you should really check out as far as good story, characters, english voice acting and no good vs evil is Baccano. It is one of the best animes I have ever seen and sounds exactly like something you'd enjoy.

I'd suggest code geass and death note. Both are slightly more psychological at times though, although code geass has awesome mechs. The childisness is sometimes present in code geass, but enough so that it's really only a way to signify the other side of the life. Death note is dead serious though (does that count as a joke?)

read the manga.

synopsis: NAZI vampires attack Britain. Then the Vatican sends its holy knights (wearing klu klux klan looking robes). The Paladin Anthony stabs himself with a piece of the true cross which makes him awesome. And you know how Alucard is really old has been around for ages and yet never has any ghouls around? He keeps them inside himself and then BOOM he releases 40,000 UNDEAD HORSEMEN FROM THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE. so thats NaziVamps vs Paladins vs Alucard's army, with a burning London for its back drop complete with Zeppelin battles.

Also other anime you will like seeing as you liked Hellsing.

Ghost in the Shell
Berserk
Monster (Very Psychological)
"try" Full Metal Alchemist (you might find the humour parts a bit grating in contrast)
anything labelled with/as "Seinen"

Also try watching anything by Studio Ghibli. A lot of their stuff is framed innocently yet is very deep.

This may sound odd, but if you read the manga for Hellsing then suddenly the OVAs seem to be a lot better.

For additional Animes to watch though, I'd have to agree with most folk in saying cowboy beebop, I believe everyone should watch this. My best mates 6 month old loved it too, but that could just be the colourful moving pictures... anyhoo, be warned it's not as serious as Hellsing though, but in a good way ^_^

For seriousness I would agree again with Deathnote, I'd also suggest you look into Ghost in the shell. The films are amazing, especially the fist one, and Stand Alone Complex is a really good series. It has lighter hearted elements to it, but the way the story's written and the character development works I think it really adds to it. So don't be too put off ^_^

I disagree. The TV series was of superior quality in terms of story and characters due to subtlety (something that doesn't exist in the OVAs vocabulary). I'm not saying the OVAs are bad, just that the TV series is better.
