Things I've learned to help make your DOTA2 experience less awful:

Stay away from All Pick unless you're playing with buddies
Play with buddies
Remember a lot of people on there are shit heads that think they are better than you because they've been playing longer and have somehow managed to forget that they too once played DOTA for the first time.

Watch matches.

If you're playing shittily and your teammates are trying to give you constructive criticism, take it and listen. It's really easy to be stubborn and just think they're being an ass, but seriously listen. Playing with people that are better than you will make you better.

I definitely do recommend playing a bunch of bot games first until you have the flow of the game down. It's definitely frustrating to have a game entirely thrown off by a single shitty player.

Find someone to play with on a regular basis, and everything becomes way more fun. Having teammates negates most of the problems, and it's a way to get feedback on a regular basis.

As you probably found out, you played single draft. It'll give you an intelligence, strength, and agility hero to choose from. If you want to try all the heroes, uncheck that.

Also, there's a group http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/DotA-2

Anyway, I never really got nervous playing Dota like I did with Starcraft, or even LoL for some reason, except for when I queued for the very first game I played. Once the game started I mellowed out and just had fun.

Try playing with friends, or having music on. Maybe also watching Dota videos (like Purge's channel) if you can be bothered, since once you learn more about the game and know what's happening, you won't be as stressed.

I play DOTA 2 and Awesomenauts, and I'm here to play with if you'd like. I'm pretty sure that most people that come to this thread would also offer to play, and I think that I'll start off: [link]http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198051822252/[/link]

Just take it easy, and you'll be fine. =D
I got Awesomenauts from the humble bundle, I'm not a MOBA person, but I really like it! I see you're in the US, I'd like to learn to get better at the game, but I live in a way different time zone >_<
Funny part is, I'm also new to the game as well. It's always fun with friends, so I see no problem if you want to play with me. I haven't really started as I'm concentrating on DOTA for the moment, and my backlog isn't going to fix itself. =D

I think I have a similar problem. I recently started playing LoL and I'm finding it hard to play Classic mode with friends. Like I've been playing for a few weeks so i know the basics AP AD, Top Mid Bot, Melee Ranged Mage Tank Assassin Carry Jungler. But there's some stuff you just... I dunno where to find it.

Like the other day I was mid, and the other teams jungler kept ambushing me... I just don't have any clue how I'm meant to counter that. Then there's when people want you to jungle or carry and you dunno what they mean or want. Then when people blame you for losing the match... It's just not very nice, and there are a lot of people who rage without giving any advice on what to do next time.

As for the recommendation to get good with a few champs, that's ok advice but first I'd recommend playing random heroes. It'll help you out better in the long run as you get a working knowledge of what they do and how to counter them.
I'm going to assume you were soloing mid, and if so , you were probably a mage of some sorts. Is this correct? Getting ambushed by a jungler is definitely hard to deal with, especially if you're a mage, since they tend to be squishy. First of all, sight wards. They'll definitely help. Secondly, get help from your teammates. Ask if anyone can come to mid to help you set up a counter-gank for the enemy jungler. Even if you're teammates are recalcitrant jerks, they'll still probably jump at the chance to put down a jungler who's on a roll. Hope this can help :)
