I have never been one for creating my own games anyway, I never built my own level in LBP or designed my own campaign in any of the Civ games, but all of those games at least had a game at the core, but MC doesn't as far as I can tell, yet its being put on such a pedistle, why? creativity? They are making you guys do all the work? Keeping the fact that its an INDI company, I say again... I DON"T GET IT.

It's fun, there's you answer. A lot of big companies could learn from that.

Minecraft isn't necessarily for all players. What I think a lot of people like about Minecraft is that you can do whatever you want. You are given a world and a set of rules. What you do in that world with those rules is your choice.

It's a very different way at looking at what games can be. There's nothing wrong with having players create their own objectives.

It's very "make-your-own-fun". As it turns out, a lot of people like that.

It's a very, very good sandbox, but it's not really anything but a sandbox. If you don't like the whole "Here's a world, go build some shit (but we're not going to tell you what or why)" aspect, there's not much point in Minecraft.

You need the correct mindset for such a pure sandbox game, or you're not gonna enjoy it.

Possible problem detected, inititaing unofficial Minecraft intro:
"My name is Notch and I'd like to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to destroy a locked door?
No, says the man at Bethesda, you have to pick the lock!
No, says the man at Bioware, only jedi can do that!
No, says the man at Konami, you have to find a certain item first!
I rejected those answers. I chose the impossible, I chose... Minecraft.
Minecraft! The only doors are the ones
you make, and if you decide you don't want them, you can always tear them down."

Four cookies if you get all th references.
In all seriousness, the fun is (in my case) giving monsters the finger as you switch on peaceful mode and freely shaping the world as you see fit. Mountains, rivers, lavaflows, slowly erased from existance if they're not wanted, replaced by whatever strikes your fancy.
Apart from that, there's the whole "people have opinions" thing, explaining how some can tolerate Ninja Gaiden and the like.

Have you played it?

I did indeed try the game, although I didn't last very long. Little or no instruction (at the time) or much of anything. And with my apparent lack of (self diagnosed) creativity. Its just not for me I guess. I remember the first time I played Morrowind, on my brothers Xbox. it was hard adjusting to such an open world with only a little direction, it got a little better when I played Oblivion. I just don't think I am up to making my own game lol.

you do realize the game isn't finished right? for now it's just a creativity sandbox

Notch may or may not add a story/focus to the game by its release, but that's still more than a few months away

also, if you don't like building your own stuff, why did you buy/play it?

I tend to compare Minecraft to Lego sets.

Usually, games are basically predetermined models with a background story (like the normal LEGO series. Ice Planet, Space, Blacktron, M-Tron, Exploriens, UFO... I stopped following the news after UFO). Of course, a PC game isn't as flexible as a LEGO playset. YOu can't just decide that BLackspace are the good guys, just because they have the more awesome base (COme on, it was pretty awesome for its time, all those moving parts... *sigh*), you're stuck with the predetermined story of the game.

Minecraft, on the other hand, is pretty much like getting a whole bunch of unrelated blocks and parts with no assembly instructions. You get the tools, you get the material, and you start building.

I personally love LEGO, but can't really work up a lot of motivation for Minecraft, so the comparisons might not really be good. Minecraft is still missing the physical interaction with the blocks.

Basically it is all about creating your own goals and being given the tools to achieve them. Maybe you want to create a giant robot to live in, a zeppelin or even just design and test different traps to use on enemies.

I can see how some people might not like it, but once you have a clearly defined goal, it's a blast.

You never try anything new?

I am always trying something new or something I haven't done before, this is one of those times. I was just curious to see what other people saw in it, since I was having a hard time.

why would you forfit half the content of the other games man!? get your createhat on noa!

Anyway, as Yahtzee said, give yourself a goal. Go in some online server with proper rules, so you can build your stuff and have people go: K that's good.
If you lost your createhat, a LSD is fine too

It's a sandbox game, you do what you want, the only constraint being the capabilities of the game, given how basic (and easy to mod) minecraft is, the possibilities are almost endless.

I was under the impression that you'd tried such things before, and either wasn't impressed or just didn't have fun. Trying new things is completely fine, I didn't mean to come off that way.

I think I can explain it. You know how good it feels to actually achive something, to get an achivement or trophy in the apst, even if its wiped from your drive, you get that little boost. The numbers don't always count, its just affirmation of your tasks importance.

What minecraft does is it lets us do anyhting, litterally anything, basically any fantasy is achievable so long as its within the very wide boundries. Trains, danger, forts, the survivalist part of it.

You know how you spend time making a character who looks like you or at least looks how you'd want them to in an RPG despite never getting to see them, its like that except you don't have any constraints.

So long as you keep yourself within the boundries of the game you can make anything with enough effort but enough ease to make it all seem both worth it and do-able. I made a colloseium with friends and the fun part was watching it come together, the idea of it is whats fun and all you need to do is find something you long to make, be it the starship enterprise or a giant golden ****, you can try and make it.

Its the total freedom in what you can build, no set peices, only peices is what appeals to people.

Sorry for all the spelling errors and typhos I'm curently too tired to correct.

Has anyone seen any numbers describing who plays Mine craft? IE PC Gamers VS Console or anything of that sort. I'm not trying to start a war, but it just occurred to me that this whole conversation kind of echoes the whole concept of PC VS Console games. Thoughts?
