you do realize the game isn't finished right? for now it's just a creativity sandbox

Notch may or may not add a story/focus to the game by its release, but that's still more than a few months away

also, if you don't like building your own stuff, why did you buy/play it?
You never try anything new?

I am always trying something new or something I haven't done before, this is one of those times. I was just curious to see what other people saw in it, since I was having a hard time.
I was under the impression that you'd tried such things before, and either wasn't impressed or just didn't have fun. Trying new things is completely fine, I didn't mean to come off that way.
No worries, I didn't take offense. I would be interested to try a "game" set in the minecraft world, that might get me to spend some time with it lol just don't make me build my own game ha ha

I have never been one for creating my own games anyway, I never built my own level in LBP or designed my own campaign in any of the Civ games, but all of those games at least had a game at the core, but MC doesn't as far as I can tell, yet its being put on such a pedistle, why? creativity? They are making you guys do all the work? Keeping the fact that its an INDI company, I say again... I DON"T GET IT.
It's a resource management game. In order to build things, you need to acquire materials and acquiring those materials is not always easy. Any ninny can mine the earth to uncover every block to find all the ore possible, but real men spelunk in cave systems where you have to use problem-solving skills to figure out how to get down a steep drop-off or reach a bit of diamond suspended over lava.

Also, you must manage a limited inventory, the materials you have acquired and most of all, time. You could spend the rest of your life digging up iron ore and never build that mine cart system. Or you could half build it until you run out of iron and then the monsters come out.

that's like saying you don't like legos on steroids, because that is pretty much what minecraft is when you get down to it.

Lego blocks are "build ready" I see your point, however thats the only contention I have.

It's like legos, except with walking green assholes who ruin your buildings every so often.

The sense of joy when you complete a project you have worked hard at is pretty good. Also finding things is awesome.

If you're really having trouble finding out what to do, try survival. If you don't understand what to do (crafting, controls, or otherwise) try going to the minecraft wiki. If you can't get through more then thirty minutes of actual play time, then this game probably isn't for you.

The graphics are horrible, the physics are a joke, it's coded in Java so it crashes as often as Fallout: New Vegas, yet it's better than any of the Ultra-HD bullshit everyone else is playing. It's just fun, and it lets you turn your creative side loose.
How are the graphics horrible?

Possible problem detected, inititaing unofficial Minecraft intro:
"My name is Notch and I'd like to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to destroy a locked door?
No, says the man at Bethesda, you have to pick the lock!
No, says the man at Bioware, only jedi can do that!
No, says the man at Konami, you have to find a certain item first!
I rejected those answers. I chose the impossible, I chose... Minecraft.
Minecraft! The only doors are the ones
you make, and if you decide you don't want them, you can always tear them down."

Four cookies if you get all th references.
In all seriousness, the fun is (in my case) giving monsters the finger as you switch on peaceful mode and freely shaping the world as you see fit. Mountains, rivers, lavaflows, slowly erased from existance if they're not wanted, replaced by whatever strikes your fancy.
Apart from that, there's the whole "people have opinions" thing, explaining how some can tolerate Ninja Gaiden and the like.
That's pretty awesome.

OT: Anyways you have to make your own fun, give yourself a goal and then try to achieve that goal.

I understand what you are getting at. I don't particuarly like Minecraft either. Here's my forray into Minecraft condensed into 5 stages.

1 Explored basics, what materials I can use and how
2 Got killed by mobs, decided I needed at least a house to stay at night.
3 Bored at night I decided to build a mine to get materials.
4 Built mob tower to gather more materials.
5 Built a giant castle in the sky, and a tower from the bottom to top of game.

Now at 5 I did feel a sense of elation and pride at finishing the project. But I was disappointed at how little satisfaction it was.

All in all I didn't feel Minecraft was an efficient path for proportional satisfaction. All the annoyances I suffered from burning in lava pits, drowning, falling to death etc. just weren't justified by the end satisfaction.

I only needed a week to get bored of Minecraft.

It's not that I'm increative (see I just made up a new word), I just prefer to expend such creative energies in other mediums, such as music, writing and philosophy.

Maybe Minecraft's main selling/hype point is that it gives someone the tools to be creative, which sparks their creativity.

But I was creative before Minecraft came along and I think i'll stick to those outlets rather than arranging ones and zeros on a computer screen.

It's a world builder. The same people who play it play farmville and all the other non games. It's a sign of the times where the new gaming crowd is coming in. Look at angry birds, it's a game that has been around for years but someone repackages it and the least common denominator of gaming eats it up. Look who plays it, look what other games they have played in the past, and then you will know why it's so popular. Same with Minecraft, it's a poorly designed level editor, the same type of thing that's been around for years, repackage it and sell it to the same people who are playing browser games and phone apps. It's a fad and will fade in time. It's not novel, it's not a new idea, it's just accessible. So is Happy Fun Time Barbie Island Dream Maker.

So what if they're making us do the work? Believe it or not, satisfying work is one of the most rewarding fun thing a person can participate in, and it's hard to think of anything more immediately rewarding than Minecraft. Every single thing you do has immediate results, tangible changes to the world which you can see and which are the results of your own actions.

One of the many reasons for which Minecraft is fun is that it makes the gamer do the work.

It's Legos. On Crack. I don't know how to describe it any more aptly than that. If you don't like Legos, you won't like Minecraft. It's entirely a game about making your own fun.

I don't get it either but people are gonna do what they enjoy, and people seem to like building random junk and posting videos of their junk on youtube. It can get a bit overwhelming when you don't get why something is so popular (Justin Bieber, Twilight and Jersey Shores popularity continues to baffle and disgust me to the point that makes me fearful for the future of the human race) but I digress, Minecraft is just a popular game, it's fans are civil and never behave like halo and cod fanboys on internet forums and to Minecrafts credit its got nothing to do with shite teenage love songs, creepy necrophilliac books or the dumbification of humanity.
