Did you purchase Witcher 2 recently with euros? If that's the case than you get two free games, one for $5.99 and one for $9.99. If you are looking for long, deep, original RPGs, I would highly recommend Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura]and Planescape: Torment [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/planescape_torment]. If you prefer post-apocalyptic scenery to fantasy steampunk, replace Arcanum with either Fallout 2 or Fallout Tactics (story sacrificed for better combat).

Just to strengthen the opinion, don't get HOMM 4, it killed the series.

Well, if you like RPG and D&D go with either NWN or BG. NWN is less hardcore since it's 3.5 and BG is ad&d 2. I find NWN more friendly.

Disciples 2 is pretty much like heroes of might and magic 4 so don't bother.

Stronghold is a nice strategy game but it doesn't have much replay value since it's fairly easy to develop strategies to finish off quickly the opponent.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3. If you haven't played it and you don't dislike turn based strategy then you owe it to yourself to play this game. Of course most of those games are really good at what they do so in the end it's up to your own genre preference.

Well if I were to get a game (some of which I already own, but that's not the point of this exercise) I'd get in order:

1) Neverwinter Nights
2) Baldur's Gate 2
3) Prince of Persia
4) Planescape Torment
5) Farcry
6) Duke Nukem 3D

Hope that helps.

What do you like? Maybe name some of your other favourite games to guide us.
Would you download fan made content? Some of these games have sizable amounts of fan created content (esp NWN)
Good news is a lot of those games are good :)

My personal suggestions:
- NWN:Diamond
- HOMM3 > HOMM4
- Stronghold
- Serious Sam (either is pretty good I think)? Then again I think they recently got HD re-makes..
- UT2004 > other Unreals
I haven't finished Baldur's Gate or Planescape but they get a lot of big thumbs up. Baldur's Gate 2 is generally regarded as longer and better than the first but it follows on so you should probably start with the 1st one (and only if you're ready for 100hrs of isometric rpg-ign).

My suggestions:

-Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. The second one is superior, but you kind of need to play the first one to get the story.

-Planescape: Torment

-HOMM3

-UT2K4

Note that for some of these you will want to check some of the GoG threads about recommended mods. You can play them all in a modern resolution and patch up the bugs/re-add content.

What? Pretty much like Heroes 4, because it's an RTS? Yes, it's a medieval fantasy world, where you have heroes fighting evil monsters in that world, but it is NOT "pretty much like Heroes 4". For one, the way units are handled is way different, leveling them instead of just purchasing more each week. This ties with the city, where you don't just buy the initial building and then the upgrade. There are actually several units, where you have different upgrade paths, making for more customization. Other than that, you have different types of heroes with specific things only they can do, different magic system, gorgeously hand-drawn background and a much different lore.

As for OP: I'd recommend Planescape: Torment, being my second favourite game of all time. I just did another playthrough, which I finished a couple of days ago. The story is like nothing you'll experience in any other game. The next in line, I'd recommend off that list is Baldur's Gate 2, you can pour many, many hours into that game and still not do and see everything in that game. It's just marvelous.

7 recommendations for HOM&M3
7 for Baldurs Gate2
7 for Planescape:Torment
5 for UT2K4
4 for FarCry
4 for NWN

I've got questions about some of these:

-I used to play HOM&M3 with my brother when i was a child, it was awesome fun. However I'm having concerns if it will be as good in singleplayer.
-BG:2&P:T old, hardcore RPGs - are they really difficult? It would help if you compared it to Icewind Dale.
-NWN... i've heard about it - it's existence is all i know. How is it? Can you compare gameplay to any more modern game?

EDIT: 1 more point for BG and P:T in last post.

I've bought the physical Witcher 2 CE, and i received high amount of previously mentioned points thanks to it.

Oh, and one more thing: You can recommend any game from GoG, so if you guys think there is something i didn't pick that is worth getting, feel free to tell me.

Any one of these
Planescape Torment
Baldurs Gate 2
Arcanum
Fallout

EDIT: NWN, it's basicaly a top down isometric view RPG like all of the above, although you can freely change the camera angle and zoom in and out (quite revolutionary back then). Can't say that the gameplay resembles anything in particular (certainly not more recent Bioware stuff if you were wondering), it's pretty generic of d20 based rpgs, but surprisingly addictive. The story of the NWN is pretty extremely forgettable, the expansions, Shadow of Urentide and Hordes of the Underdark are far better written IMHO. They are what make it worth buying - but only after everything else on your list.

I think i'll choose HOM&M3, it's one game i surely know i will enjoy. BG2 and P:T may be bit too challenging, and i don't know enough about NWN to risk.

Loyalty program - you get points for registering games. Also, it's awesomeness has something to do with the fact that CD-Projekt's (this publisher, also dev of Witcher 2) and GoG's offices are in the same building.
CD Projekt own CD Projekt Red (the developer) and GoG. They're also the largest games distributor in Poland.

Planescape: Torment is much easier than Baldur's gate 2. Planescape: Torment is mostly just reading. YOu can't even die except in a few parts in the game. The gameplay is a bit cumbersome however, but just put the game on easy. But like I said only play it if you want to read A LOT.

The singleplayer is still extremely fun. I bought the GOG version myself when it first became available on GOG, and the version they sell is the 'complete' version with such a ridiculous number of campaigns, maps, races, and just sheer content that it's pretty insane. HoM&M3 is still just as fun today as when it was released, it's a really safe pick.

If you've played Icewind Dale, you're already familiar with how Baldur's Gate works and to a lesser extent Planescape: Torment. It's the same game engine used for all three games. Baldur's Gate 2 would be my personal pick for best of the list. Gameplay wise it's almost identical to Icewind Dale, using the same DnD ruleset and in many cases the same abilities, classes and spells only better refined and much more story driven. Rather than creating your party at the start, in BG2 you recruit an amazing cast of memorable characters throughout the course of the story.

Planescape: Torment also uses the same engine, but gameplay wise is by far the weakest link. The redeeming value for it however and why so many people consider it a legendary experience is because of the incredibly deep and unique story.

NWN is more comparable to Icewind Dale actually than any more recent title, only instead of controlling a group you control a single character. Personally I find NWN's main campaign and even gameplay mechanics to be pretty weak, I was honestly really disappointed with NWN when it was first released. Thankfully however it's since become a must own for any rpg fan simply because of the sheer volume of often amazing player made campaign and story available for the game. I'm talking dozens, if not well over a hundred campaign to sink your teeth into. Like any other modding community many, if not most will be shit. But there's also some really, really, REALLY good player campaign out there that're certainly worth playing.

So really in NWN's case how much you'd enjoy the game depends entirely upon how much time you'd be willing to spend looking up mods to enjoy. If that's not your thing, I wouldn't recommend it. Otherwise certainly worth a look-see.
