-I used to play HOM&M3 with my brother when i was a child, it was awesome fun. However I'm having concerns if it will be as good in singleplayer.
The singleplayer is still extremely fun. I bought the GOG version myself when it first became available on GOG, and the version they sell is the 'complete' version with such a ridiculous number of campaigns, maps, races, and just sheer content that it's pretty insane. HoM&M3 is still just as fun today as when it was released, it's a really safe pick.

-BG:2&P:T old, hardcore RPGs - are they really difficult? It would help if you compared it to Icewind Dale.
If you've played Icewind Dale, you're already familiar with how Baldur's Gate works and to a lesser extent Planescape: Torment. It's the same game engine used for all three games. Baldur's Gate 2 would be my personal pick for best of the list. Gameplay wise it's almost identical to Icewind Dale, using the same DnD ruleset and in many cases the same abilities, classes and spells only better refined and much more story driven. Rather than creating your party at the start, in BG2 you recruit an amazing cast of memorable characters throughout the course of the story.
Planescape: Torment also uses the same engine, but gameplay wise is by far the weakest link. The redeeming value for it however and why so many people consider it a legendary experience is because of the incredibly deep and unique story.

-NWN... i've heard about it - it's existence is all i know. How is it? Can you compare gameplay to any more modern game?
NWN is more comparable to Icewind Dale actually than any more recent title, only instead of controlling a group you control a single character. Personally I find NWN's main campaign and even gameplay mechanics to be pretty weak, I was honestly really disappointed with NWN when it was first released. Thankfully however it's since become a must own for any rpg fan simply because of the sheer volume of often
amazing player made campaign and story available for the game. I'm talking dozens, if not well over a hundred campaign to sink your teeth into. Like any other modding community many, if not most will be shit. But there's also some really, really, REALLY good player campaign out there that're certainly worth playing.
So really in NWN's case how much you'd enjoy the game depends entirely upon how much time you'd be willing to spend looking up mods to enjoy. If that's not your thing, I wouldn't recommend it. Otherwise certainly worth a look-see.
