for series these are all amazing

Naruto (ninjas, my favorite long running anime (more than 50 episodes) of all time. seriously its amazing, and later on the story gets rather twisted too. however nowadays it seems like its cool on forums not to like naruto and bleach, no clue why.)

Gundam Wing (Mecha anime (giant robots), its vintage now, was released in 91 i think, but the story is so deep and great and the overall package so well put together that i still enjoy it to this day. Be warned though, it is heavily political, but never boring, i guarantee you that)

Bleach (I would Recommend watching that now, the fillers have ended and its great again.)

Fullmetal Alchemist (Alchemy and a masterful story, definitely one to watch. short series)

Cowboy Bebop (possibly one of the greatest anime series of all time, bounty hunters. short series)

Dragonball Z (.....)

Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex (cyberpunk, very deep storyline, very intricate)

One Piece (pirates, light hearted yet action packed, emotional, and hilarious at the same time, one of my favorite long running series)

Samurai Champloo (from the makers of cowboy bebop, amazing also, samurai)

Trigun (again an awesome anime, full of action and well developed characters, one of the best out there i think, dystopian sci-fi)

Noir (incredible, assassins and amnesia, a great soundtrack, great story and a gunfight every episode, it actually had me hooked till the end)

Black Lagoon (I know i have put up a lot of action anime, but these are all incredible, and this is no exception. Mercenaries in south asia, gunfighting)

My recommendation is Full Metal Panic season 1, season 2 (second raid) and Fummoffu. It's pure genius.
I loved Fummoffu, definately one of the funniest series' I've ever seen.
It really is awesome. I think watching it once you've seen the first season of Full Metal Panic is even better considering you know the characters a lot more. Sagara is just a dude!
I found the first season "wanting" in that it really lacked any concrete direction but yeah, Fummoffu is a LOT funnier if you've seen the first season first because then you know the characters.

The brilliant Hot Springs makes me laugh just thinking about it.
Hot springs was good, but I firmly stand by the Dojo and caretaker :D

While I'm posting this, I forgot to show my love for School Rumble and Azumanga Diaho. really great animes. The manga's rock too.

Black Lagoon is one I watched recently. It really is the epitome of cool. The leading lady (Revy) is just awesome and brutal.

I'd reccomend all things Ghost in The Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Golgo 13, Neo Tokyo, and Ninja Scroll.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I don't care if you don't like it, that just means your opinion is wrong.

Right now ... I'm watching Kuroshitsuji and Tales of the Abyss. Admittedly, I've never played Tales of the Abyss, so it's all very fresh and exciting and pretty well done. I like sitting there going, "Hey, this must have been a boss battle!"

Oh yes. I was wearing the clever pants that day.

Kuroshitsuji is really dark, kind of morbid and all kinds of what the hell near the 6th episode. Ciel Phantomhive was declared missing/dead but returned to England and with a butler named Sebastian Michaels in tow. From what I've gathered, Ciel goes around on the orders of Queen Victoria and investigates deadly shenanigans going on around England. Sebastian is ... well, it's quite obvious when you get into it he's not just a butler and there are demons and jack the ripper and all sorts of fun stuff. plus the rest of the staff at the Phantomhive mansion are hilariously incompetent

Hm. That's about it for me, though. I've only recently started watching anime again after I kind of got lost in the dust for Bleach during the beginning of the Arancar arc. XD I really need to catch up.

If you liked Love Hina, the same guy (Ken Akamatsu) is also doing a series called Negima! Which is pretty much the same thing.

Apart from the main protagonist is 10.

And all of the girls (and there are a lot) are older than him.

And they all inexplicably love him.

And of course, being Akamatsu, the fan service is off the charts.

I've always loved anime. Not just because it's anime, but the storytelling and concepts blow me away.

Recently i've sorta regained my passion and i looked into a few things. Im only gunna drop two things for you guys, first of all would be my favorite anime, which is Beck...by a long shot.
My fave AMV (anime music video) is Jihaku's AMV for The foo fighters' "Best of you"

tell me ur fave anime and AMV, im looking for new material

[EDIT] Animes i have liked in the past are...
Grenadier
Berserk
Elfen Lied
Bleach (not anymore tho, too much filler)
Death Note
Chrno Crusade (yeah, it's not chrono)
Akira
Beck (duh)
Love Hina
Paranoia Agent

and more i can't remember, but that should give a decent sample.

for anyone who wanted to see the best of you AMV, heres the link http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dQAf6MQj1kE I really love that AMV cuz the musicality is amazing, and the sheer number of animes used is mind blowing.
Ok.
Definetley Fullmetal Alchemist, then Code Geass, which if you like Death Note, you will like, and one of my favorites, FLCL (Fooly Cooly)

I wholeheartedly suggest Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's like Gundam meets Paranoia Agent, mixed with a slight Oedipus complex and a generous helping of good ol' fashioned "WTF?" moments. Really puts the screws to you in the end, both logically and emotionally, but it's completely worth it.

If you're in the mood for something less metaphysical, I recommend Dragon Ball. Say what you will about Z and GT, the original series was classic. It was the right mix of combat, humor and real, genuine adventure. The fights didn't have huge explosions, city-pulverizing ki waves or multiple transformations, but they were better for it; Every fight was up close and personal, and unless it was one of those rare occasions when you can see the ending coming, they were very suspenseful. I still maintain that the bout between Jackie Chun (Master Roshi) and Goku during the World Tournament is one of the series' greatest fights.

Why has there only been one mention of GITS? (Ghost in the shell)

Superb soundtrack
Intelligent, paced and enthralling plot
Characters.. with personalities, much anime lacks this
Epicness
Very, very well dubbed.

I'll admit, i'm not a massive anime fan, i like about 4 of the things. But GITS is the best of those and i have plenty of big anime-fan friends who are with me when i say it's one of the best out there.

As far as anime goes, you CAN NOT go wrong with Cowboy Bebop, a one season long sci-fi anime about space bounty hunters. Like others have said, not just one of the best animes ever, but one of the best t.v. shows ever. I also liked Outlaw Star, had the same basic theme, but it's quite different and still good.

Outlaw Star is an awesome anime, left me wanting more.... DO NOT watch the spin-off, Angel Links.... Just don't. I normally give people personal choice, but not on that one.

Based off the Love Hina, I suggest Ah! My Goddess (The OVA was called Oh! My Goddess) The Ova had a movie too. Shuffle might also strike your fancy, though it's kinda hit or miss with people, I'm on the fence about it myself.
Thankfully, my friend is our groups anime library, he even has two different Akira's. We have a listing of the anime and movies we each own so we know who to borrow what from, I'll read off the list of the ones I like:

Aquarion (Mecha), Last Exile (Uh...Coolness?), RahXephon (Mecha, Drama), Samurai 7 (Samurai, Sci-Fi, Mecha), I also kinda liked Reideen (Mecha), Blue Gender (Sci-Fi, Mecha), Scrapped Princess (Sci-Fi, Mecha-ish), I just got this one from UPS last week and love it- Dot hack Sign ("The World"), Fafner (Mecha), My-Hime (ERROR- Unknown Genre), Girls Bravo (As I recall: Sci-Fi, Harem), Ergo Proxy (Dystopian Sci-Fi), Witchblade (Sci-Fi, Drama?), Tenchi Muyo (Crazy Sci-Fi), The Twelve Kingdoms (Fantasy) which leaves you yearning for more, and you might like Please Teacher and Please Twins (Harem, Sci-Fi).

I'm not great with names and some of the Genre might be wrong (We need to add those), so I may be forgetting if I had even seen some of these.

Edit: Man am I a bit short-minded, I started the post originally to mention one of my favorites and I go off being more complex. Record of Lodoss War (Fantasy). Make sure to watch the OVA. I had rented this once, and loved it, so I went to buy it, and accidently bought the sequel, which is still good, sure the spoofs between episodes were odd ("Beat him off, beat him off"), good still. Either way, watch the OVA, it's very good. And as for AMV's, there is a good AMV for this one based off the song from The Rabbit Joint- Legend of Zelda, I'm biased about Zelda, yes.
Also, I got started on Anime with Robotech, which is a Quasi-Macross. Remade out of a couple different animes, using the Macross universe as a base. I actually have the DVD set I bought as soon as they each came out. Watched it originally when it first aired, I'm so old. Some people hate Robotech because it's a "Cheap Macross", but don't think of it that way. It's kinda like the Tenchi Muyo series' in my view-point, alternite retellings using the familiar base. The Macross Saga is the best part of the Robotech series though, if I may add that. Wow, long edit.... Almost the length of the pre-edit post.... Hope these suggestions (Forced oppinions?) help a bit.

I recommend hellsing or full metal panic.

both are brilliant and i recommend reading the manga aswell but thats okay if you dont because it's still bloody brilliant.

also on the topic of bloody brilliant anime cowboy bebop deserves a mention a watch and a purchasing of all things related. but right now i cant seem to remember why i enjoyed this so much but needless to say its brilliant. incidently the manga is brilliant aswell.

thats enough anime talk for now otherwise i would have to restrain myself or something.

EDIT: silly silly me how could i forget. melancholy of haruhi suzumiya it's really really brilliant combining school drama (a leetel) comedy and mystery sci-fi shiznit in a brilliantly flawless manner.

*begins restraint*

YES

Stand Alone Complex was one of my first animes. The depth of story, action which doesn't depend on massive swords and fireballs, brilliant characters and overall awesomeness drew me right in.

Other than this, I would suggest Neon Genesis Evangelion. That anime has some of the most likeable characters I've ever seen. The story also gets deeper and deeper as you get further in, although it also gets more and more strange and psychological. The last two episodes are just plain freakish, although they did make the film End of Evangelion for those unsatisfied with the ending.
