Hello again all!

Alright so I'm in a bit of a pickle and I'd like to hear the Escapist Community's suggestions on this one. Here we go

My dad got cut back at his job to only four days a week, which sucks but is still better than him not having one at all, so on Mondays he doesn't work. He's been spending his days off instead fixing up our house (which doesn't really need to have any work done to it), which is a good use of time. However, last week he confided in me that he's been running himself ragged working on his days off, usually from sunup to well after sundown. I mean, in the last two weeks he's totally redone all three of our bathrooms, new toilets and everything, in just over 24 hours of work, which is ridiculous.

So I got to thinking, what does this hardworking man need? And my first thought was, of course, video games! I approached him with the idea of just spending one or two hours on his day off playing something that he'd like, it's a great way to relax, and he really wasn't into it.

This is where you guys come in. I'd like to hear some suggestions of a game I should pick up that he might like, I realize that you guys and girls don't know him so can't vouch for his tastes, but I'll provide some guidelines that might help along the way.

1. We used to play MLB '99 on my PS1 and that was it, but I want a game with a story so no sports games.

2. No shooters either, he hates violence and when I was ten even made me bring back Medal Of Honor after he saw me shoot a Nazi point-blank in the face with a shotgun (Ohh if he could see what I'm able to do in Fallout 3....)

3. I thought Katamari would be good but I think it's far too Japanese and... eclectic for him to play. Same goes for pretty much any RPG

4. Really simple one, it has to be for PS2.

Sorry if I've eliminated pretty much everything that you guys can think of, but any help would be appreciated.

TL;DR version (really? It's only like 3 paragraphs and a list of qualifications)

Daddy need vidya game to keep himself occupied, must not be a shooter, sports or rpg and on PS2 Help!!!!1oneone!

Sad story.

Katamari sounds like a good place to start, it's about as simple as games come. Would SSBB count as 'Violent' to your dad? If not go with that. Maybe Super Mario (Galaxy, Sunshine) or Zelda.

Ever think of a racing game? Or a computer game?
Tales of Monkey Island sounds perfect for him.

Maybe guitar hero or rock band? They're not violent, easy to get into and pretty addictive.

Oh wait, he hates violence... that put C&C RA out of it. Damn it!
Well violence from above is different from gibbing someone from two feet away, but I don't have a computer at my house that can run anything at all.

Nonono, it's a PS1 game. The original, One of my first and favourite games.

And since there is no gibbing (just a fair bit of blood), it sounds good for him.

Would the Ratchet and Clank games be out of the question? Granted, they do contain some violence, but it's fairly light and 100% gore-free, if I remember correctly.

Actually, Ratchet and Clank sound like a really good idea, maybe that one will work.

Unless he can actually play guitar like my dad. Then it will just frustrate the hell out of him.

If not that, I'd say give Lego Star Wars a try. Far too addictive for its own good.

Oh damn, I forgot about those!

So yes, go for them. The first 3 should be dirt cheap by now.

Eh Fifa, Madden? I did think Pokemon unless thats too violent for him.

Edit: If he doesn't like sports , shooter or RPG I can't think of any games that won't be violent. Teach him to like violence and show him they are not as bad as it seems.

I wouldn't worry about not being able to run Red Alert. It was released in the 90's. Should work fine unless you've got a computer from the 90's! :p

The first of the Prince of Persia series on PS2 wasn't really violent, more of a platformer / puzzler.

Dragon Quest VIII, Escape from Monkey Island, Burnout series, Kingdom Hearts series, Lego Star Wars...

Him not liking violent games pretty much kills the majority of what I'd suggest outside of a few racing games. Burnout 3 and Burnout Take Down are fairly good games. They're fun, easy to learn (kinda hard to master) and have a good deal of replay value.
Need for speed underground is decent, though can be very frustrating in later levels.

Haha it's juuuuuust barely out of the 90's, we got it in 2000 with Windows ME, that horrible, horrible operating system. It's been upgraded and such, RAM, hard drive space, but my brother, who's twelve, can't help but click on any and every link that says "LEGO STAR WARS!" so we have a crap load of spyware on it constantly, it runs a Macafee sweep every night and still gets bogged down.
