Hi there, I'm always happy to throw out a couple of suggestions when it comes to books. I'll give some different ones from different genres, all of which I have recently read and enjoyed greatly.
Fantasy - The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko (first of the The Night Watch trilogy) (EDIT - NINJA'D)
The Painted Man by Peter V. Brett (first of a planned trilogy(?) called The Demon War, second part is also out)
Sci Fi - The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton (the first of the excellent Nights Dawn Trilogy)
Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton (first in the Commonwealth Saga, a trilogy is also set in the same universe called The Void Trilogy. This is my favourite series of books. Hamilton writes pretty hard sci fi but isn't overly technical, the only fantastical element of his writings in these books is FTL travel and The Void, and he gives both great explanations)
Anything by Iain M. Banks, either his fiction or Sci Fi stuff, both are very high quality.
Contemporary - The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo by Stieg Larsson (two other books set in The Millenium Series with the same characters, sort of crime detective drama but a journalist and a strange woman are the protagonists, no cops. I've just finished the final one, I can't recommend these books enough, and I am not a huge fan of crime fiction)
Hopefully you can find something you like there, and even if you don't, reading's so underrated isn't it?
