Looking for stand alone books too sorry... although I don't believe i have read a steam punk book yet.
In that case, go check out The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, which is one of the definitive steampunk novels.

If you haven't read 'Dune', do it now! It's an epic classic, and probably the best sci-fi book I have ever read, if not the best book.

Start off with Good Omens by Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman, then move on to American Gods by Gaiman, then the Discworld series of novels by Pratchet. Those are two of my favorite authors, and Pratchet's Discworld is fairly humorous while still being a great read. I doubt I'm spelling his name right, but check it out.

If you're looking for standalone books, try Lost Boys by Orson S. Card. It's not sci fi like his usual stuff, but it's still good.

If you ever decide to read a series, I highly reccommend Card's Ender Saga for sci fi and Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice/Tawny Man trilogies (they're all about the same guy. AA comes first).

The Nightwatch Series by Sergei Lukyanenko. Fantastic series, blends off it's tits magical super battles with pragmatic Russian grit. Plus there's a few vampires if you're into that sort of thing.

Discworld by Terry Pratchett is always a good series to get into. I think there's over thirty books in it now, so there's a lot of material there to keep you going.

If you like your noir mystery stuff, I'd recommend Raymond Chandler's Phillip Marlowe books. Very entertaining.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.

If you take your time and read something else in between each book, you may be finished in time for the publication of the next book.

Aside from that, many of the series I would recommend have already been recommended.

If you like science fiction, I would suggest checking out some of Robert J Sawyers books. He did a series about dinosaur scientists, I'm not sure what the series was called, but one of those books was called Far-Seer and it had something to do with a dinosaur version of Galileo (it was a nice read, and I'm not describing it in the most appealing manner)

If you are interested in Warhammer 40K then either the Horus Heresy or Gaunts Ghost's. Both brilliant.

Are The Dresden Files any good, My missus is reading them I am wondering whether I should as well as she also loves the Twilight Saga.
The Dresden Files are amazing. Don't assume they are bad cause she reads other crap. It is, in fact, my favorite book series. Check it out.

To the OP: The Name of the Wind.

Hi there, I'm always happy to throw out a couple of suggestions when it comes to books. I'll give some different ones from different genres, all of which I have recently read and enjoyed greatly.

Fantasy - The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko (first of the The Night Watch trilogy) (EDIT - NINJA'D)
The Painted Man by Peter V. Brett (first of a planned trilogy(?) called The Demon War, second part is also out)

Sci Fi - The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton (the first of the excellent Nights Dawn Trilogy)
Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton (first in the Commonwealth Saga, a trilogy is also set in the same universe called The Void Trilogy. This is my favourite series of books. Hamilton writes pretty hard sci fi but isn't overly technical, the only fantastical element of his writings in these books is FTL travel and The Void, and he gives both great explanations)
Anything by Iain M. Banks, either his fiction or Sci Fi stuff, both are very high quality.

Contemporary - The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo by Stieg Larsson (two other books set in The Millenium Series with the same characters, sort of crime detective drama but a journalist and a strange woman are the protagonists, no cops. I've just finished the final one, I can't recommend these books enough, and I am not a huge fan of crime fiction)

Hopefully you can find something you like there, and even if you don't, reading's so underrated isn't it?
