Honorable mention to Bella from Twilight for being a manipulative *****.
And for ruining what could have been a decent book? If she counts as the hero in that book, Bella. I fucking HATE Bella.

Dub! Naruto. Became a little more bearable after he dropped his stupid catch phrase. I watched subs though, and was tolerant enough to sit through the filler period of doom without complaining. I stopped watching the show a while ago though, so it doesn't matter much.

Captain Planet - I don't mind heroes who are goody-goody if its because their principled just dont be preachy about it or give educational speeches.
Dude, that was the point of the cartoon's entire existence. I'm not saying he wasn't irritating, but preachy educational speeches were his purpose in life.

Zealos Wilder, Tales of Symphonia
Smug - Check
Lovable perv - Barely passing, mostly for the perv part
Plus, his Party switch (which he comes crawling back for the same reason)
Oh, and spoil rich kid who has had everything handed to him, leads to all his whining.

There are no bad characters, only bad uses for them. The heroes who I can not stand are only who they are because of they way that they are used in-story. That would make for a rather lengthy list, so I'll cut it down to the characters whose mis-use currently displeases me.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers. All of that power to do what a handful of environmentalists could do in an hour or two without super powers. Mati is the worst of the lot. Any power that would give one an edge in day-to-day life (even if just one's love life)trumps ridiculous destructive super powers. Who needs Optic Blasts when anyone can buy and use a bazooka?

Aqua-Man for the same reasons as Mati, at least as he was used in Super Friends and his own comic book. The writers of Justice League/Unlimited knew what to do with him thus I didn't dislike him. The same goes for the DC animated universe rendition of Super Man, Wonder Woman, Hawk Girl ,Mar....okay, everyone who isn't a Vertigo character.

Kraytos from God of War 2 and 3. Sure, he was a ridiculous, over-the-top author/audience surrogate/wish-fulfilment figure but he was endearing in the way that Rob Liefeld's version of X-Force was. Earnest corniness can match intentional farce(see Bayonetta or Matt Hazard)or top it in terms of pure comedy factor and escapism alike. Kraytos' personality also worked well enough within the confines of the first game's story and setting that it didn't chafe me too badly in my skull-box thing.
He was enraged at Ares tricking him into doing unto his own as he had done unto others. It was 'Evil versus Eviller',Ex-Boss versus Ex-Employee and that was all the motivation that we needed. It beats Frogger any day. The sequel not only undid the ending of the original but it failed to give proper motivation to get Kraytos back into the fray. Worst of all, it removed the more interesting Heracles from his rightful role in the story (freeing Prometheus and possible toppling Zeus as Zeus had unseated Kronus)! Kraytos is such a monster in GoW 2 that I completely sympathized with his enemies.
He also seems like a more interesting challenge to take down that any of the Greek Gods! If players had been put in the role of Ares'/Athena' offspring going after the new God of War for their own reasons, all would be forgiven with Kraytos.

Wolverine in any childrens' program. Animalistic psychopaths with blades in their arms should never star in shows for children (in America, at least)ever again. He might as well wear a rainbow wig, oversized green pants and a squeaky red rubber nose.

But that's mainly due to the fact so many fans adore him eventhough he has the motivation and personality of a cardboard box
I honestly think a cardboard box might just have more personality. More personality that absolutely none at all. I'm with you on this one, it doesn't make much sense to have fans that attached to Gordon when he doesn't even speak...

Being a mute wouldn't be such a problem if we could see him emote, but, being a first person action game, the best we can hope for is expressive hand gestures...and he doesn't even do that!

I personally found myself more connected with even Marcus Fenix from Gears of War than I did with Gordon. I guess that's what made Half-Life different. He didn't have a personality. He was a blank canvas, and in fact it made it feel more like it was me doing this stuff. I felt like I was Gordon Freeman because of his lack of emotions. Hopefully you understand what I mean... Marcus Fenix was a better character, but Gordon sort of made it feel like it was me doing all this stuff as if I was actually in the game.

There are lots of heroes that deserve a boot to the teeth in my book. Those that need it:

Vanille (FFXIII): She's a pretty girl and all, but play enough of the storyline and one would realize that she deserves a fist to the face, the same way Snow got his... repeatedly.

That guy you control in Bioshock 1: Total wimp. All someone had to say was "Would you kindly..." and the man would do it. He lost his balls, in my eyes.

Amata (Fallout 3): She isn't really a hero, but she does enough in the game to be classified as one. Getting me out of the vault, restoring order in Vault 101 after I kill the overseer, and having the audacity to ban me from said vault. I nuked the ***** and killed everyone for that. Didn't save lol.

Tidus (FFX): A bad character altogether. The whole laughing scene made me want to throw a brick in his mouth. That, and the daddy issues.

Mario and Link: No matter how many times they rescue the damsel in distress from the same enemy, said ladies will never give the heroes the time of day, let alone some bedroom action. Logically speaking, if the women keep getting "kidnapped" by the same villain, they're more than likely whores suffering from Stockholm syndrome. Any ordinary guy would have gotten the clue on the second or third rescue. Any more than that and it isn't a coincidence.

Well,it is one of the reasons why WRPGs are eclipsing JRPGs in popularity these days.(I purchased Dragon Age Origins:Awakenings over Final Fantasy XIII myself) I understand completely.

Although I can't really say anything in Marios defense, I can't help but think you're wrong as far as Link is concerned. You see the Legend of Zelda game are all completely separate storys, to put it bluntly although Gannon kidnaps Zelda who is in turn rescued by Link is recycled every other installment it is never the same Gannon kidnapping the same Zelda who is then rescued by the same Link. Heck according to Nintendo most of the Hyrules these events take place in are on completely separate plains of existence from one another not even sharing a time line (though some of them do, ie. Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker).

Further more in most games Link doesn't even seem to have any romantic designs for Zelda. In Ocarina of Time he even has a love interest at the start of the game, (granted it would never work out unless link grows up to be a pedophile) at the start of Twilight Princess link also has a love interest at the start of the game. The only time I can think of Link and Zelda ever seem to have any sort of chemistry is between Link and Tetra. Link usually doesn't even meet Zelda until he's already seen or faced off against an agent of the upcoming evil and resolved himself to fight against it, saving Zelda is often just something that has to happen along the way in order to stop Ganon.

I guess it's a good thing he doesn't even exist in the video game huh?

This.I can never understand how he regularly tops best gaming character polls and the like. The guy has no character or personality
Beacause by not having a personality, you can decide his personality to your liking.
Yes but my point still stands. How can a guy with no personality of his own regularly win "Best Gaming Personality" or whatever. That's like a silent character(of which he is one)winning a best voice award.Makes no sense to me
Hm, I knew he won best video game charictar or somthing like that on gamestop but I didnt know about the "Best Gaming Personality" you have a point, that does make no sense.
