Batman. Oh whats that batman? youre gonna get your ass kicked by the joker after he escaped for the 8th time and murdered people because your morals meant you cant kill him? oh thats right because giving joker another chance is worth the lives of many innoncent civilians

Quoted for truth. The main propblem with this is that the current Batman is supposed to be dark, gritty, and realistic. In real life, you can't always save innocent lives without killing. His conisistent reliance on deus ex machina's to manufacture a way to save the day without killing is not realistic.

Originally, Batman was dark, gritty, realistic, and he carried a gun and shot people.

Then he became a campy hippie with Bat female villian repellent.

http://superdickery.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=746:bat-female-villain-repellent&catid=36:stupor-powers-index&Itemid=38

Because he wasn't even remotely realistic, and his enemies didn't kill people, it made perfect sense for him to never kill people.

Now, they are trying to combine his dark gritty realism from his roots, with his hippie pacifism from the 60's. It is not working. It makes no freaking sense.

To be fair, I think the writers were going for angsty inner conflict, but it just comes off as stupidly contradictory. His enemies break out of jail half a dozen times, and mass tortue/murder innocent people each time. There is no conceiveable solution except killing them, which the state is unwilling to do.

Only in the mind of a total pacifist is there any real inner conflict here.

"Hmmm....let's see...the lives of a dozen mass rapist/torturere/murderers-versus the sanity, health and lives of THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE. And there is no way to save the people except by killing the badguys. What do I do? WHAT DO I DO!?"

Police and soldiers kill all the time under similar logic. Struggling for a better world where killing isn't necessary would make sense if it was physically possible, but if it's not he should have the dark, gritty realism to just accept it and move on.

This isn't conflict, it's contradiction.

Shallow motivation? Check.
Blatant disregard for anyone other than their self? Check.
Makes the dumbest choices known to man? You better fucking believe it.
To be fair, he DID have sex with a LOT different girls.
I'll quote the "Anything That Moves" page off TVTropes on him:

"Lets see what he likes to mate with: Bishoujo his age? Check. Their beautiful young mothers? Check. Their Seven year old sisters?. Double Check. Adorable young BOYS who are just as beautiful if not moreso than his girlfriend(s)? Triple Check."

That should be worth something right?

Just kidding. You fucked up bro.
1. Fair point.
2. By "7 year old sisters" are the referring to Kokoro? O_O
I could write a list of the people he's had sex with. It would be easy because it's EVERY GIRL IN THE ENTIRE SERIES.
Google implies that there is no romance between Nanami and Makoto.

I have reason to believe that was a fraudulent statement, good sir. :p
I have since edited that post several times because I realized that was a stupid thing to say.
:O
Then you have my apologies.

I shale now put away my flintlocks and forget all notions of a duel at sundown.
Good. Now I won't have to postpone my nap.

Thirded. I couldn't stand that book when I was forced to read it for school. Seriously, the entire print was the asinine, emo ramblings of an angsty teenager.

I think the word you're looking for is Heroes.

And for me, I pick Naruto from... well, Naruto.

He just annoys me so much.

Honorable mention to Bella from Twilight for being a manipulative *****.
Agreed

Lack of any interesting characteristics, loud, obnoxious, stupid, shallow, one track minded, and in retrospect kind of an asshole

Because he's so ridiculously incompetent and childish, it's impossible to have sympathy for him
The great thing about Naruto is that he's outgrown all of those traits.

His early life of being ostracized and hated turned him into an obnoxious brat. As the story progressed, he began to achieve everything he wanted in the first place. Skill, friendship, admiration as a great ninja. His experiences have matured him to the point where he's almost nothing like that annoying little kid from chapter one anymore.

He's now fighting for world peace. Literally.
While it's true that he's not downright annoying anymore he still lacks any real depth. The thing is, that since he's not annoying anymore he's devolved into a blunt instrument of good. He's like Goku, he has no defining characteristics except how straight up nice he is.

But now I'm getting off topic

But that's mainly due to the fact so many fans adore him eventhough he has the motivation and personality of a cardboard box
This.I can never understand how he regularly tops best gaming character polls and the like. The guy has no character or personality
It's because the player can make him what ever they want him to be. I'm not saying that he should be getting awards for best character as he has no character of his own. What I'm saying is that story telling is better when you can relate to the character and there's no one you relate to better than yourself. When I play a game, I'm not playing as Gordon Freeman or anyone else, my character in the game is a fictitious version of myself.

Now back to the point, I can't actually think of any at the moment.

For games: Hakuman from BlazBlue. This stems more from the fact that my first playthrough of arcade mode ever (as Ragna) was brought to a screeching halt by this guy. He could generate the neccessary energy to take out half my health in 10 counts and continued to kill me for about an hour. Then it turns out that he's an @$$hole to everyone, even to the point of telling the world to go f*ck itself at the end of his story (pretty much saying that they deserved the wrath of the monster he saved it from, and that they should spend their days repenting).
If you've seen the true ending of the game, you might despise him all the more upon learning who he really is. That would make him two characters you can't stand. At least he seems to detest himself as much as he does everyone else and they hate him.

That's because he has MY motivation and MY personaality. When I play Half Life 2 I play it because I'm in love with Alyx (yeah, sad, i know). Someone else will play it to save mankind. Because Gordon Freeman is a blank slate we can project our own take onto him.

Jack from Farcry. He spends the entire game bitching about his predicament to the people who are trying to get him out of it. Also, Gordon Freeman, or rather the many people who adore Gordon Freeman even though he could easily be replaced by any number of generic silent shooter heros. I think I took that contest on Gamespot way to seriously.

I'm suprised no one's mentioned Raiden yet, but I never really had a problem with the guy other than the fact that he wasn't Solid Snake.

You know, I can't really choose. I would say Ash Ketchum, but nostalgia means I actually love him.

Hmm... I dunno, I'm sure anime could throw up some little shite, I feel it has a knack for it.

Yeah, but that doesn't make him a good character. It makes him a faceless avatar.

There's nothing wrong with that, but it still strikes me as odd that fans think he's a good game character.

My inner snob comes out in these kinds of topics. My biggest passion in life is storytelling. You simply cannot tell a good story without an engaging protagonist and I feel like offensively bad characterization is the downfall of a staggering amount of mainstream media.

My biggest pet peeve is badly written female characters. You want to write a badass girl? Don't make her a *****. Rubi, I'm looking at you. Writing badassery shouldn't matter between male or female - make a character who pushes through even when the situation is hopeless. Not all-powerful and unbeatable, but durable during hard times. Look at Ripley from Aliens. She doesn't need to be a butch man-woman to be badass, either.

Skin and gratuitous amounts of boobs does not equal an automatically attractive character, either. That is slutty and cheap fan service. What's up, Bayonetta? Alyx Vance is, in my opinion, sexy as hell and she shows little more than a tiny bit of midriff. Sexy is strength without needing to show off skin and without girl-power bossiness. Seriously, it IS possible to make a character attractive without skin exposure everywhere.

Then you have the hopeless girly-girls. I find this mostly in anime, which is why I have trouble tolerating pretty much all of them ever. They are doormats who don't have any strength for themselves, basically, and I have no interest in that.

Macho men without any personality - Gears of War dudes, most war games, Farcry's Jack - are a dime a dozen. That's not a good thing. You can write a really hot tough guy WITH personality; he doesn't need to be soulless to be cool. John McClane from Die Hard, anyone? I may or may not have a poster of him on my wall. ... Cough. >_>

Then you've got the emo men. Modern day Batman, I dedicate this to you. Perpetual brooding is not hot or cool. It is annoying. Would you want to hang out with a downer all day when you're trying to have fun? Please to stop.

But above everything, I hate protagonists who preach at me. Anime is notorious for violence-is-always-bad black and white morals. Like Vash from Trigun, for one. Funny guy, easily lovable, but I really did not like the extreme pacifistic views of the anime and how he constantly broke down into monologues about how fighting is bad. Especially because there is a solid argument for the opposite side that is not touched upon at ALL. If you want that to be the underlying motif of your story, fine. Please don't make the character a soap box for your views, however. I want to be immersed in a story, not a dissertation of the author's opinions.

Oedipus. He's told by an oracle that he'll kill his father and marry his mother, so what does he do? He goes and kills an old man and marries a middle-aged woman. Then when he realises what he's done, he stabs himself in the face!

What a moron.

Im gonna go with Shinji Ikari... What a whiney little prude he is </3
a prude?? a prude doesnt jack off on a chick who's in a coma... but for my choice.... probably shinji lol. little prick gets to ride a fucking giant robot and all he can do is whine and complain.
Shinji is deeply, deeply depressed (and for some pretty good reasons. 1. He witnessed his mother's death (absorbed into the same 'giant robot' he later piloted. 2. His father callously abandoned him, sending him to live with a teacher or uncle. 3a. When he returns to Tokyo-3 he finds out that his father has essentially adopted another child (Rei) 3b. Gendo shows far more affection to Rei than Shinji.
Don't forget that he felt every bit of damage that his EVA took, so in his first three battle his EVA had an arm broken, a giant spike driven through it's head, it's hands severely burned, was stabbed through the torso and was blasted in the chest with a powerful energy beam/ particle cannon (and Shinji himself was nearly boiled alive)
