AND they were not short of Cool sounding bird names.

but if it was batman and hawk then you would be disappointed when hawk is totally useless
it is easy for a sidekick to live up to a name like robin

also hawk sound almost too awesome to be a mere sidekick

anyways a more realistic pokemon scenario involves no public use of pokemon as they are being developed int an army by the world governments- also the cold war would involve high level charizards instead of nukes and the battles between pokemon would be far more brutal
and KO would mean killed off

Cloud - I've had people try to defend him, and I sadly keep disagreeing, as he's goes from obnoxious warrior to a whiney emo boy. People think Vincent is the emo boy, but dear lord people need to know what emo really is.... *points to Cloud*

Ichigo [Bleach] - I liked him at first, but when you have nothing more than repetition, then it gets boring, fast.

Naruto - Funny part is that I don't like him as much as I did before, when he was younger, hell, before the latest stuff that's happened to him recently. He's just...well, let's just say that everything that has happened to him was crap, only Luke Skywalker could take on as much crap as Naruto did and handle himself well.

Spiderman - ....Well, if the other three on on here, are we surprised.

Now I have a small list of heroes I don't like, but, there are a handful that I do like, such as Luke Skywalker, Luffy (he's just goofy, and I like the goofy heroes), Auron (FFX), Vincent (FF7), and others. Kratos would be another, but I liked him a bit more at the beginning, and the second God of War II didn't really pass well with me (though I love the gameplay, hence why I don't make fun of the God of War Series).

Shinji is deeply, deeply depressed (and for some pretty good reasons. 1. He witnessed his mother's death (absorbed into the same 'giant robot' he later piloted. 2. His father callously abandoned him, sending him to live with a teacher or uncle. 3a. When he returns to Tokyo-3 he finds out that his father has essentially adopted another child (Rei) 3b. Gendo shows far more affection to Rei than Shinji.
Don't forget that he felt every bit of damage that his EVA took, so in his first three battle his EVA had an arm broken, a giant spike driven through it's head, it's hands severely burned, was stabbed through the torso and was blasted in the chest with a powerful energy beam/ particle cannon (and Shinji himself was nearly boiled alive)

Lack of any interesting characteristics, loud, obnoxious, stupid, shallow, one track minded, and in retrospect kind of an asshole

Because he's so ridiculously incompetent and childish, it's impossible to have sympathy for him

The great thing about Naruto is that he's outgrown all of those traits.

His early life of being ostracized and hated turned him into an obnoxious brat. As the story progressed, he began to achieve everything he wanted in the first place. Skill, friendship, admiration as a great ninja. His experiences have matured him to the point where he's almost nothing like that annoying little kid from chapter one anymore.

He's now fighting for world peace. Literally.

On Topic: I'd definitely have to say Kaim Argonar from Lost Odyssey. Miserable arse describes him quite well I believe, he doesn't even grow out of his problem like Lightning or Naruto do for example.
