So I'm probably getting a DS for my birthday. The last handheld I owned was a Gameboy Advance, so I'm not up to date on the portable world at all. I was wondering what are some good suggestions? I like RPGs and puzzlers are fun too, Well done adventure games are worth it was well in my opinion.
I know the obligatory Pokemon suggestin is coming, so I ask if I should wait for Black and White or go ahead and get Soul Silver/ Platinum and just get B/w later?

The World Ends With You is a must buy in my opinion. The story is interesting, the gameplay is fun, and the soundtrack is awesome.

Chrono Trigger is a fun game to play on the DS. Its a great RPG to play and will keep you entertained for a long time. As for puzzle games, the Professor Layton games are great in my opinion, but only played the first one(Curious Village) so I don't know about 2nd one (Diabolical Box) but either one is a great puzzle game. I absolutely love the music in both these games and the story in Chrono trigger is great as well as in Professor Layton so I recommend you to get either of these games for your DS.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
super robot taisen endless frontier, if you can find it, its an atlus game and those tend to vanish from shelfs fast
puzzle quest is really good on the ds
magical starsign is a fantastic rpg, it looks kiddy on the outside but if you replace a few words then you have one of the darker rpgs around, one of your earlier activities involves looking for your friends sever head.
all the castlevania games are good for the ds also, portrait of ruin is my personal fave but they are all good

One of the 2D castlevanias? IIRC there is a sequel to aria of sorrow on the DS. Seem like a lot of fun.

Mario kart DS, fun racer with mario and gang.

With pokemon, it really depends of how much a fan you are, if you are, get one of the games now. if not, just wait for Black/white.

Hmm, for Adventure/RPGs:
Etrian Odyssey 1, 2, 3
Dark Spire
Sonic Colors (comes out this month and actually looks like it won't suck)
Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver (I personally wouldn't wait for B/W)
Final Fantasy 3, 4
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, and Dawn of Sorrow
Scribblenauts
Dementium the Ward 1, 2 (more of a horror series than adventure, but still fun)
Nostalgia
Super Mario 64 DS
Kirby: Super Star Ultra, Squeak Squad, Canvas Curse
Dragon Quest 9
It's all ready been mentioned, but The World Ends With You is a must have
Okami-den (isn't out til next year)

For Puzzle games:
Tetris DS
Pokemon Trozei
Meteos
Picross 3D
Any Professor Layton game

Pokemon Soul Silver
Castlevania Dawn of Sarrow
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
MegaMan ZX
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's World Championship 2010 Reverse of Arcadia

Also if you get a DS thats backwards compatible get these:

Golden Sun 1 and 2
Castlevania Aria of Sarrow
Pokemon Fire Red
Kirby Nightmare in Dream land (bite me ^^ this game is super fun)
Metroid Zero Mission/Fusion

The DS Metroid games kinda suck :p and i never played a Zelda game on the DS so i cant tell you any thing about those...

Pretty mouch my favorite games for the system ^^ You might like some of them too :D

Basically, anything by Level 5 should be right up your alley. So that includes Dragon Quest 9, the Prof. Layton games, those sport-based RPGs that only came out in Japan.

The World Ends With You definitely has top-notch art design, but I found it to be a bit repetitive.

Off topic: I have Etrian Odyssey 1 and I find it balls to the wall hard. I'm wondering if I like number 3 because of an Astrologer and all. But still... Do you have any strategies or ways of beating these games? I'm not even past the second map. O_O

You should just go out and buy every single Pokemon game that has been released as of yet, whether you can play them or not.

It's the right thing to do. /nod
