I've been on these forums a little while now, in fact I just got the little 'Regular' icon this morning which made me smile. I do like this place in spite of its flaws, but one thing that always annoyed me is how a lot of people here have a kind of passionate hatred towards people who listen to that soulless music you find in the charts. There seems to be a stigma against us for one of two reasons, either because we like something popular so we must be 'sheep' (which is ridiculous) or because popular music is stupid, which means people who listen to it are stupid. (wait, that's ridiculous too) This is funny, because for a community of people who pride themselves on their intellectual capabilities a lot of you seem very quick to jump to conclusions and stereotype people.

I love mainstream music more than anything else. I like dance, pop, pop-rock, r&b and hip-hop. Basically, if its in the Top40 charts I likely listen to it. One of my fave singers is Lady Gaga, and I'm going to see her in concert next month. If some people on the Escapist were in charge, this kind of stuff would be worthy of the death penalty.

In a thread that just popped up called "Musically represented personality" a lot of people have admitted they can't help judging people like me and branding us as intellectually inferior because of our music taste. There was a thread about Gaga a while ago where people just said "shes a slut" and a bunch of people basically said anyone who listens to her is a musical deviant and must be purged... >_> And in every single music thread that pops up, you can bet you'll find people saying mainstream music is horrible (saying it as though it's a fact) and that people who listen to it are retarded, and I'll be the only one saying I enjoy it, instantly making me the forum retard in a lot of people's eyes.

So why do I like popular music? Well partly because finding music that isn't popular requires effort and I really can't be arsed, while popular music is readily available on the radio and internet without me having to scope things out. And partly because everytime I've been recommended to music by some obscure artist I've hardly ever liked it. (this isn't a cue for everyone to throw their favorite songs at me, please, that isn't the point of this thread and I don't need 'converting') However, mainstream songs generally appeal to me; and though there is some shit out there I enjoy a lot of it.

One thing I do dislike about my preferred genres is a lack of much of a decent message in the song (it's not always shit messages though as some people would have you believe, just most of the time it is) However, the music itself is more important to me, and I'd prefer to have a song that sticks in my mind and is 'infectious'.

But this doesn't make me thick, it just means that music means something different to me than to you people. While to some, every song must be a masterpiece that gives us emotion, to me music only has to be distraction to relax or dance to. And I'm sorry, but, people like me happen to be the majority, and we're not all thick.

The reason I posted this thread is perhaps half because I wanted to rant, but also because I really want this judgmental attitude to stop.
______

TL;DR: Read the fucking thread before posting, you lazy bastard.

The best way to stop people being judgemental is not to rant at them and be judgemental.

I tend not to care what other people listen to as long as they don't make me listen to it.

I don't like the modern music industry, and I have various reasons, most not related to the music, but some are. I won't go into them because it's pretty much essay length grievances.

Like what you want, understand where you are, and don't feel a need to justify yourself, or fight for the cause. If there's one thing on the planet that doesn't need people fighting for it, it's the mainstream pop industry.

I'm the same man I don't understand how someone can not like a certain type of music and I like it all. I guess I'm just very open minded. Also take me to Lady Gaga!!!!!!111 I want to party with her it would kick ass of the god's.

I'm quite partial to an occasional bit of pop. A lot of it's popular because it's good. (Or does it have Will Smith in it?!)

As much as I hate some mainstream music, I won't usually bash a particular genre unless I REALLY hate it (gangster rap is my main target).

Though I will steadfastly refuse to listen to most mainstream artists, that's just my opinion.

I think that what you listen to musically says something about your relationship with music in general. This all made sense to me when I read the line about not being bothered to look for better music elsewhere. If you LOVED music you would want to find the best music out there for your tastes. If not, you might be the kind of guy who likes songs that are catchy but music is not a big part of your life.

P.S. Pop music is made to sell to the masses and thus has to be dumbed down so that it can be liked by the maximum number of people. People who say its not as good . . . . are right.

I'm usually very tolerant of other people's music tastes. However, when people who listen to mainstream crap (mind you, not all mainstream music is bad, just most of it) try to force me to listen to it for one reason or another, I may react to it and get into a (a rare time, somewhat heated) discussion about it. I've never lost such a discussion yet. Naturally, if someone makes a suggestion for a song, which happens to be mainstream crap, I won't mind. But all too often people try to force it on me.
All this is my personal opinion, and I respect that some people enjoy mainstream music as long as I don't have to suffer through listening to it. If people do that, I won't force my death metal through their ears.

I loathe pop music. All your post says to me is that you're a casual music listener and not serious about your music like I am.

And that's ok too.

I think you can find good music in pretty much every genre. I really don't see the point of limiting yourself to just a few.

I generally try to keep out of musical debates.

My taste in music is questionable at best.

I'd much rather listen to Sonic Youth but to be honest I would rather listen to Lady Gaga than a lot of the metal and epic classical tracks that these young "gamers" seem to go for these days.

I got nothing wrong with something being mainstream...as long as it isn't shit.

The thing that makes me laugh most about a lot of people (at least my friends who are like this) who bash mainstream stuff and call those who think it's good "sheep", is that they seem to think that makes them cool or something. As far as I'm concerned they're sheep too, they just belong to a diffrent herd.

(I'm thick, aren't I? It isn't a herd of sheep... or is it? Please correct me, google is failing me.)
