The only reason i hate the music is because it's almost always about the same... Love, something, what do i know, something else, whatever. The one thing i hate more then mainstream is HARDSTYLE TECHNO, it's shit and it's about fucking time people realise it!! The music has no meaning, no lyrics. The reason i don't like the people is because they have a tendancy of saying: My music is awesome, fuck you and you're Heavy Metal it's all shit and has no meaning. This world sucks, or maybe i'm just born in the wrong place. All this said, i like you kid.

I keep hearing about this Lady Gaga. Who is she? I've never heard of her. I assume that it's some kind of fancy baby.

OT: I hold no grudge to mainstream music. Hell, I love Radiohead, and they are considered mainstream (at least, their early work is. Not sure about their most recent stuff.)

I'm more of an instrumental fellow, myself.

But hey, I can respect your taste in music...

I am sorry but no one who is like that really cares about your opinion on this at all and is something you have to live with on this forum and makign a thread about it doesn't help infact it gives trolls another medium to ***** about it. You don't see me making threads about the atrocious attitudes towards JRPGs on this forum.

You see, there's an important distinction. You, average joe, like this music on its own merits - the specific chord, instrument and riff choices. However, there's a significant number of people who listen to music on secondary merits - because it's considered good by one group or the other. No subsection of music is exempt from this, but mainstream takes the brunt of the hate, because it has the most noticable number of such followers. The hate itself is also similarly divided. Some hate people who hold regurgitated opinions and don't bother to ever build their own, some hate the sounds (and fuckwits among them extend this hatred to adherents of their hated music) and some hate because that's what the others are doing.
It's not uniform, it never is and you shouldn't argue as though it was.

I don't listen to music. But despite how close minded this may seem, I actually have less trouble than most when it comes to accepting music.
Oh, and on these kinds of treads some people are agreeing with you but probably did what you said was wrong. That seems to happen a lot...

You make a bunch of valid points. This has made me realise that I too (I, being someone who prides himself on being very reasonable) somewhat automatically group then 'People who listen to mainstream music' with the 'Fags'. This has made me decide that I am no longer going to do this, and I am going to try and keep more of an open mind, as you've given me a lot to think about.

Kudos.

And? What do you want, a medal?

People don't like stuff. Just so happens alot of people who label themselves "gamers" on this site don't like the same music you like. Maybe there's something behind there, maybe there isn't. Point being, what's the big deal?

See, now I feel that this is pointed at me, I understand is directed to the forum as a whole, but still, because of my last post on this subject was a quote of your quote about my post (damn, thats a mouth full). I said, I have this problem, I try not to think all people who listen to pop are thick, its just the people that I happen to live near that do, are. Nothing against people like you, because I know that what type of music you like does not affects your intelligence, I'm just saying is because of where I live, it affects my opinion on the genre as a whole. Again, I try not to be spiteful, I just am.

I can understand people who like popular music if they like to dance to it. You don't really need to be thinking too hard about the message of what you're listening to if you're busy moving to it. And for really hardcore dancers, you can't separate dance and music, so it makes sense to only consider dance tunes for your musical collection.

I like rock.

You like other things.

Just don't play it at high volume when I'm trying to do something, and we'll be fine.

I am absolutely guilty of judging people, when I first meet them, that mostly/solely enjoy top40 kind of music as possibly uninteresting etc. but it is stuff like the OP that really makes me think twice about my prejudices.

When someone lists off their favourite artists that are all featured in heavily mainstream music, it does infuriate my elitism. I have, however, just realised that maybe not most people's lives revolve around music, the same way if I were to list any authors I read, I would probably be considered an ignoramus in the literary world.

P.S. Pop music is made to sell to the masses and thus has to be dumbed down so that it can be liked by the maximum number of people. People who say its not as good . . . . are right.
While you have a point, I believe the a more important reason pop music is dumbed down is because it's mass produced.
Think about this:
You're a radio station. You get paid based on the amount of listeners you have.
Would you rather play a music genre that releases 10 albums a year or a music genre that releases 10 albums a minute?

It's true that pop music is, in general, easier to listen to and easier to attract masses, but we're also used to it because most radio stations play the music that's easier to produce.
Why not play it all? Usually people who get attracted to the easy listening of pop music aren't interested in listening to music that has to "grow on you" or requires paying attention to the lyrics.
So it's both because it has to appeal to the masses who mostly don't bother with what they're served and because if you get people to like that genre, you can sell them so much more.

Hi, I'm a gamer and hate mainstream music because commercial radio stations do something called "High rotation".

Essentially, anything that is popular gets played more than something less popular. And I'm not talking like twice a day. Some songs will be played up to 10 times a day on the same station. After that, all pop music seems to melt together becoming one horrible sound.

Once a song comes off high rotation, I'll give it a go. But chances are I'll have heard it 1000 times that week anyway.

Trust me, liking mainstream music and being a gamer doesn't make you special.

Whoopedy-freaking-doo, you and HOW many else?
Alright, that's maybe a bit harsh, but seriously, I doubt anyone cares a whole lot about someone else's music tastes, at least on these very intelligent and nice forums. Of course, there are exceptions, but it's like...you're a gamer, cool, that's all we need to know, we generally don't care if you listen to the god of war soundtrack on repeat exactly 17.5 hours a day or have no interest in music whatsoever. Say one bad thing about Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann or Firefly, though, and you WILL get flamed (just a fair warning/headsup), but generally, people here ain't culture snobs ('cept when it comes to anime...). Besides, most people here has such diverse tastes your "mainstream" tastes probably ain't all that special.
Myself, I listen to whatever the fuck I like, not "mainstream" or "obscure" or "indie" things. I may tend to like metal and rock and punk over things like The Killers (they have one good song in my eyes, and that's somebody told me) or 50 Cent, but that won't stop me giving them a listen if I think it might be good. I have just had the necessary experience to know it's not appealing to me. I admit to skimming through your post, since it's near midnight here, but I see you seem to think in the same way as me, or at least slightly so. You lament the lack of a general message in mainstream music, but think about it: these days we're already bombarded with messages and information from everywhere, what makes you think people necessarily want to spend a whole day dissecting every single song from every single artist? Some people just want a funky beat and/or something that appeals to their sense of estetics instead of their ethics. /lame pseudo-philosophical pun. Oh, and although I don't want to sound too harsh, I will say: get over yourself, you're not the only one and not a special case. Lots of people here like mainstream music from what I gather, although there's a lot of obscure-stuff-lovers here as well. I'm sorry, but I just get the same vibe from this OP that I get from girl gamers that go and make threads like "I'm a girl gamer, ain't that just awesome? I'm so cool and rare, bow down and worship me, for I am unique."
PS: Sorry if I make no sense whatsoever.
PSS: Sorry for sounding like (and being) an ass

I don't mind mainstream music, because I'm used to hearing it, and, truth be told, most of it's not THAT bad. The thing I don't like though, is when people who listen to it think they're better than me because I don't listen to music that they've ever heard of.

If I ever want to listen to the radio in class, when there's nothing else to do, and the teacher will let us, if anyone suggests that we put on the local rock station, I get a riot. usually what happens is that either the radio gets turned off, or it goes to the mainstream channel, where only me and two of my friends don't like the music. I've gotten comments, when listening to Led Zepplin, that "This isn't real music" and "Why was this ever made".

I don't like it when people just judge the music before they've even listened to it.

I like maintsream music, but not from this decade/last decade. I quite like the mainstream music from the 30's - 40's(Swing etc.) and the 80's (Karma Chameleon is a guilty pleasure). I'll also listen to Lady Gaga as she isn't that bad, but wouldn't buy any of her albums. Hell, I even think the Jonas brothers aren't that bad. However, most modern pop music is too electronic for me(what, with all the auto-tuning and all that) so I stick with fairly obscure Punk as the brunt of my music library.
