BOSON! YEAH!

Now I just need to understand how this is significant.
The Higgs Boson is what gives matter mass. In other words, if we find a way to alter it somewhat, we just discovered Element Zero.

saw something about this in the paper this morning... isn't it still "unofficial"? like they found it but they aren't willing to just say "It's real!" or did they finaly decide they had their evidence together enough?

Its why a quark has more mass than an electron, to put it simply.

Also, Yay science
My high-school physics brain just exploded. Messily. Thanks.

Of course a duck is bigger than an electron.

That's just silly.
But a witch is also bigger than a duck and they still float... so electrons must be part witch?
Seems legit.

We should burn them, just to be sure.
I have some bad news about how heat works, man.

I've got a fiver that says it involves gravity fields and space magic.

It's basically a case of "we're pretty sure, but want to make absolutely sure as this is one of the biggest discoveries in the history of human-kind".

OT: And the stars became that much closer, the edges of the universe shrinking ever so slightly.

I am pumped for this, being heavily pro-science, but i have to ask, just what can discovering a particle smaller than an up quark contribute to society on the whole?

Other than further ramming the nails in the coffin of creationist beliefs, of course.

This is great news for science.

Now we just wait for the tabloids to start spouting nonsense.
I've already seen people saying shit like that. The wonders of the internet. Instant international audience to idiocy.

Of course they forget to acknowledge that the scientists aren't even saying with 100% certainty yet that they've discovered anything.

So, anyone actually read the OP?
Their "Proof" that this is the higgs boson is literally just "It has mass."

Yeah.
No, seriously, that's all they have.

Could tampering with this somehow destroy the universe?
I'm pretty sure beings quite so insignificant as ourselves could wreck shit to quite that extent, regardless of the tech we pack. At the moment.

OP: I hope this turns out to be it. Hell, it may inspire me to put in another four years to make certain my understanding of this goes from near-nothingness to microscopic.

Besides, I imagine at least a doctorate is required to work with this stuff.

Awesome day for physics is awesome!Even if this isn't necessarily a Higgs-Boson, the potential discovery is still quite significant.

Biological science has to step things up now. I want my man-eating frogs.

Think of it as the world's present to America for her birthday.

We're too busy making bodily functions obsolete [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118178-Science-Renders-Breathing-Obsolete] to worry about physics anyway.

OT: Excellent, now how can we use it in my new world order?

Well...

Or, alternatively, you can convert the LHC into a Quantum Linear Generator capable of changing the nature of the universe at the fundamental levels which inevitably holds the risk of destroying everything.

Was anyone actually following this or are people just vicariously commending themselves because they took physics in high school?

But lmao @ steven hawking, the bbc keeps playing that clip over and over xD
