BOSON! YEAH!

Now I just need to understand how this is significant.
The Higgs Boson is what gives matter mass. In other words, if we find a way to alter it somewhat, we just discovered Element Zero.
Never said why it is significant, and I also stated I know a lot of what it is.

What I am saying is I want to figure out HOW this is significant, in a way that I can explain it to others. (not that I will bother though)

You see saying "it is a reason we have mass" doesn't make a lot of sense unless you know more about the math involved and what exactly happens here.

PS: WAAAAAAGH

Well, if it didn't exist, neither would matter. It's what gives matter gravity, holds the universe together, allows anything to exist.

I'm really excited for this. Also, for the non-believers, they said 99.999% sure. I don't think Murphy's Law is going to go and strike them down this time.

This is great news for science.

Now we just wait for the tabloids to start spouting nonsense.
And apparently Higgs wasn't the first guy to observe it. There's an old man in Belgium who described it months earlier. Hooray for scientific inaccuracy!

"of course" Don't be a smartass captcha! You didn't know how to write inaccuracy either!

They've SUPPOSEDLY found it. Come on, Murphy's law! Break our whole understanding of physics in half!
But if they turn out to be right, how does this affect the world as we know it again?

"riff-raff"

No wait, "run amok"

Could tampering with this somehow destroy the universe?
It's already begun. Apparently they caused this thing called "The Big Rip" and we'll start seeing the effects pretty soon. You should get into your bombshelter as fast as possible to avoid the radiation.

Its why a quark has more mass than an electron, to put it simply.
Of course a duck is bigger than an electron.

That's just silly.
But a witch is also bigger than a duck and they still float... so electrons must be part witch?
Seems legit.

We should burn them, just to be sure.
I have some bad news about how heat works, man.
Yay for vaguely obscure physics jokes!

We don't need those things anymore, thanks.

With the Higgs, we can make our own space and biology :D

Gonna do a bit of a buzz-kill here, but the Higgs is in fact only responsible for some mass. Mass also arises from the binding energy in hadrons. (A Hadron is any particle comprising of more than one quark). Its still pretty cool though.

Okay, for someone who has no idea about physics and how it works and stuff.
Could someone please explain what this is, what it means and why it is significant?
I don't get the whole "quarks" and such terminology.
Basically, I'm asking for a laymans explanation.

Can we actually do that? Seriously, is that possible? Even theoretically? Because if it is, then I am way more excited about this then I was before, which is saying something.

Quarks form Hadrons

Most common Hadrons are Protons and Neutrons

The Higgs-Boson Particle forms Quarks, despite the Higgs-Boson having more mass.

That's the basest explanation as I see it.
I still don't understand.
What does this actually mean?
I understand what Protons and Neutrons are, but that is about it.

Nah, I think it's a bit more complicated than that.

From what I do understand about it, though, we could potentially create an unlimited fuel source.
