Same thing happened at my school years back, so they got the fire brigade in and they played a tape to the assembly, all students heard this.
On the tape was a fifteen year old girl whose house was on fire, she was screaming down the phone to the 999 operator, stuck in her room whilst her house was on fire. The fire brigade didn't get to her in time because they were answering a crank call. We heard a girl dying down the phone.
It didn't happen in our year again, but it's appalling that we had to be played a tape of someone our age choking to death on smoke before people got the message that it is not funny.
