My parents found out I watch MLP and asked if I was trying to hang onto my childhood...

It's not my fault that I had an obsession with horses when I was six. So damn cute.

'Scuse me Sir or Mam but I do love your Rarity avatar. Is that gif available somewhere online and if so could you be so kind and procure a link for me or is it something you made?

hahaha, I had a funny moment relating to this kind of thing this easter.

So, my girlfriend is over for Easter supper and somehow the topic of being drunk/seeing bizarro things came up, and for some reason I forget, the topic of "seeing unicorns" came up.

My dad was like "0_o And when would be the last time you saw a unicorn?". And I said "PROBABLY the last episode I watched of that MLP-pheonix wright crossover". And my mom went "MLP? What the heck is that". To which my girlfriend replied "My little pony! Friendship is magic! *happy gesture*" (she's a fan of the show). And my dad gave me this look and said "And you've WATCHED that? Isn't it for little girls or something". So I tried to explain that it's really good, and in fact a lot of my friends are into it (well, two in particular), and my mom replied with "Wait...You are HOW old? Your friends are HOW old?". ...My friends and I are all around 23-24 years old. My GF and I ended up trying to convince them that age has nothing to do with how much you're allowed to enjoy something, especially if it's funny and well made.

My mom just shrugged it off as some sort of immaturity thing, and my dad looked at us like we were crazy. Then again, he has no imagination. Like...They watched Inception and thought it was "too weird...nothing made any sense".

Way to take that scene so horribly out-of-context.

Gee, thinking a man is gay for liking a cartoon show about ponies aimed at prepubescent girls. SHOCKING.
As a matter of fact, this was never the intention in the first place. The point was to make it a legitimate family show. Just because things started out with plastic girl toys, doesn't mean the show was actually pitched in this direction. Plenty of things change dramatically in this way. Just look at Batman, for instance.

I have not watched MLP, the little I have seen from youtube has been horrible, characters are obnoxious little...kids essentially, can't stand it. But if anyone thinks it's good, go with it. I can understand those who have not been desensitized to the whole MLP thing to think that someone is gay too.
Have you been watching redubs or something? Because, the characters in the show itself are actually rather mature.

I hope more shows try to follow in Friendship is Magic's... hoofsteps. Just because a show is meant to be appropriate to a very young demographic, doesn't mean you can't churn in the extra quality that might attract older audiences. You can still have it well-written and everything. It's certainly worth the effort.

It needs to happen. More people should see this. I was just watching the premiere of Avatar: The Legend of Korra and it was brilliant! It's, like... TV-Y7. And it was brilliant. As far as I'm concerned, it just censors some of the violence. What I don't get is why is so acceptable to play E-rated videogames, while you may be considered an outcast for watching something made for the same demographic? Similarly, why are people torn down for wearing pony shirts, while it's perfectly acceptable to wear Elmo shirts?

After reading how and why Lauren Faust took the job to create My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, it made me think about how I had the exact same issue with Pound Puppies as she had with My Little Pony. I've taken some rather advanced media classes and have made several videos. I could possibly see myself working in a Pound Puppies television show, trying to follow the example and standards that Lauren Faust set before us, as shown in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Let me tell you how my family found out i watch the show:
I had just starting watching my little pony, and i was halfway through season 1. That's when i heard my sister coming down the stairs (the computer is in the living room), so i try to switch to another tab before she saw....

Sister:What are you watching?
Me:uhhh....PORN, I'm watching porn...
*Parents look up from couch*
Sister:I saw a bunch of ponies run across the screen......what kind of porn are you watching?
Me:Shit..... ok i admit it i watch my little pony..
Sister: LOL *walks away*

The next following weeks my family would ask me questions; "Why are you watching a little girls show", stuff like that. But they have been very good sports about it, and poke fun at me all the time. My cousin even asked me to brohoof her

If you like seeing ponies running across your screen, might I recommend Desktop Ponies? Ponies on your desktop?

Pre Note: I honestly don't have any problems with people who like shows for 7 year olds, I just don't like it being shoved into my face when I don't want it to (the original post doesn't count though)

I have 2 members in my family who like the show, and insist on shoving it into my face even though I don't like the idea of it. I respect there opinions but I don't need them to pressure me into watching a kids show I have no interest in. I tell everyone that there entitled to there opinions and I don't need it shoved into my face every flipping donkey caked time I walk near them or play an online game!!!

Most people have watched the show in my family. My dad has, he said meh, my mom said it was horrible and she would've had more fun drilling her brain with a power drill, my sister is one of the fans, my younger brother is uninterested and hasn't watched it, one of my older brothers is a fan, the other says (his words) "Saying which Pony you prefer is like saying which is your favorite method of torture", and I haven't watched the show, but always pressured to watch it.

I started watching S2 when it came out on TV, on a big screen TV in my living room. My parents were confused and up until about a month ago, they started believing me when I told them I'm not gay (At least my mother has. I don't think my dad cares much) and that I like the show for the animation. I really do...and for the jokes. Though I can't muster up the courage to ask them for Bronycon tickets for my birthday (It starts one day after and it's only like 30 minutes away, plus I have friends going). So yeah XD

Yeah pretty much this.

There's a lot of stereotypes for gay men, many true (I swear about 30% of the workforce I am in are gay), and if you fall into that, expect it.

I'd be asking questions too.

Fantastic story! One of the greatest things about the popularity of My Little Pony in my view is that it challenges gender-assigned roles: something that I consider to be a bit of a backwards and often hindering element within our society.

How does what someone prefers to watch on TV have absolutely anythin to do with sexual orientation?
Because if you like one 'thing' meant for girls, maybe you like other 'things' also meant for them...
Just how all female gamers are butch lesbians, amiright?
Please, everyone knows the butch lesbians play lacrosse
Gamer girls are the Emo lesbians

Long story short, I brought a pair of Rainbow Dash and Applejack figures home that someone had left for a couple weeks at my work-place and were going to be thrown out.
Did the Applejack figure have the hat? I've been trying to find one, but they're all hatless.

As for the original question, I've had people ask me if I was gay or bi for watching MLP, but it was more of in a joking way. Everyone I know knows that it's just a show that happened to appeal to people outside of its target audience.

oddly, i had a friend over i hadn't seen in YEARS comment on the fact i have Prince Luna as my back ground. "dood, its a pony .." followed by an odd look. while my mom and dad, whom i know for a fact has also seen said background, has said nothing, probably not being able to place it.

(moms seen all kinds a weird shit, even spotted the hidden nudity in this one back ground i had for i while that i didn't notice)

No sadly. The figures aren't actually very good, they look like they came in a happy meal or something. Cutie marks aren't even right. Still cute and recognizable though, so...
