Once you get to the underground DJ stuff, it's not too bad. Quite the opposite really, there's some truly great stuff out there.
(note I resisted the urge to actually put up an Xzibit clip!)

However, chap-hop...

Why rap when you can rhyme rhythmically to a banjolele beat?
Put up your dukes! Queensbury rules!

Literally!

I have always hated rap/hip hop in all of it's forms, I just can't stand hearing it. If nobody in the song can actually play an instrument, it's garbage, plain and simple. This is why some old RunDMC and Beastie Boys is somewhat tolerable, but it's still not something I'll listen to.

Hell, I don't even like rap rock... Kid Rock always irritated the hell out of me because of that... well, and because he's a douchebag :)

Listen to Canibus' Poet Laureate II and say that 2Pac is still the deepest rapper you know.
I didn't mean to imply that Tupac is the deepest rapper. He's just a rapper with deep lyrics that EVERYONE knows. He is the single most renowned rapper in history and you can find a book of his poetry at any Chapters. And it's good poetry, too. I doubt you could say the same about 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, or Dr. Dre.

Some of the Top 40 stuff on the radio is catchy, but I actually enjoy instrumental/alternative hip hop. Does trip hop count as hip hop?

to be honest, i dont know what the difference between the two is. I like Eminem and Sage Francis, thats about it. i dont pay too much attention to the music outside of what i normally listen to. i stick with my ska and im good.

My opinion on Hip Hop and Rap ranges from "Mildly Dislike" to "Absolutely hate with a passion".

No offense to anyone who does like Rap/hip hop, I just find it annoying... Especially when there's some punk who thinks that it's a smart idea to put his radio on a rap station, turn up the volume as high as he possibly can, roll down the windows and drive through a quiet neighborhood, disturbing everyone's peace.
Most of the shit I hear booming from cars is amateur garbage with awful lyrics, lazy beats and drum lines that sound like free loops from a DAW program, and overinflated bass lines so deep that everyone in a 50-foot radius can feel it in their stomachs.

I like the post-Golden Age stuff a lot, but I can see why people like the highlights of that era more than the best of the new stuff: They don't have to swim through as much clippy bass-heavy shit to find a gem.

I have honestly never got this argument. It's not rock and roll, it's hip hop. It works on a fundamentally different level, so why try to judge it by the standards of an alien genre?

It smacks of elitism to me. It's like saying "I don't like painting or painters. If nobody can actually sculpt than it's garbage, plain and simple".

Totally different thing. Different skills are involved.

Not attacking you for simply disliking a genre. I hate metal for instance. But when I'm critiquing metal, I never say "not one of these metal artists can rap for shit, so it's garbage". That just doesn't make sense.

I rap and yeah there are some artists who are fairly narrow minded. Here's one of my songs so tell me what you think.

Personally, I like hip hop but as soon as it sounds like gangster rap, I'm out.
My favorite hip hop artists are Sweatshop union, Hilltop hoods, the hip hop by overseer and Cunnin lynguists. As far as gangster rap goes, it's just as bad as country music to me.

I think rap is as misjudged as the videogame industry and also very similar:

On one hand you have the familiar and repetitive mainstream stuff that most people judge the medium on: Soulja boy, 50 cent, Lil wayne and COD, Halo etc.

The people who are original: Aesop Rock, Scroobius Pip and Persona, Ico.

The 'Classics': NWA, Tupac and Mario, Zelda, Sonic.

The 'Serious/deep' stuff: Immortal Technique and Silent Hill, Planescape Torment.

I could go on...

One shouldn't really dislike everything from a genre or medium, thats just pure ignorance. There is most likely some rap out there that you will like, this is true with basicly every medium.

I see your Poet Laureate 2 and raise you Poet Laureate Infinity (v004).

The game is Beat Hazard where the song itself actually powers your weapon. Though seizure-inducing, it's one of the few indie games that's actually worth shit.

Canibus is so terribly underrated.

WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE?!

Well, I finally found a topic here on the escapist that was level-headed enough for me to want to make an account and reply to. :D

Rap has seriously degenerated into something that is beyond repair. A lot of mainstream acts from the early to mid 90s agree, and you can hear them talk about it in their new CDs. Rap has a bad name because of the people that are at the top representing it, and I really do not see it getting any better, anytime soon.

Hip-Hop back my way is still very big, and the underground support for it is amazing. It's great to hear some talented people get recognized, but it's too bad they'll never be heard by bigger audience, which can be said about musical artists in any genre.

Digable Planets was one of the groups I missed out on when I was a kid, because I was caught up in the mainstream, but I've found a lot of new artists that I like after putting them into Pandora, give it a shot sometime.

Hip-Hop is a genre worth getting into, it's just too bad that all good stuff is something you'll most likely only hear on a college radio station. Go out and support your local acts if you got em.

As a suburban white kid of the 80's I like some old school rap :)

Run DMC

Doug E Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew (Does anyone have "fresh crews" anymore? :p )

The Beastie Boys

My problem with Rap generally stems from a lot of the current stuff that I just can't stand and the idiots who think it's sooooo good that *I* need to hear how well it sounds reverberating through their beat up little hoopty before the bass shakes their fenders off...

I like it. Right now I'm listening to Eminem. My iPod also has some Jay-Z, Tinne Tempah and Black Eyed Peas. I just emjoy it, but I grew up with a very music oriented family so there isn't much I don't like.
