So I've been on a hip-hop mood recently and being a nerdy white dude, I wasn't exactly sure how much I would like it. I mean, the music itself would be fine but it maybe wouldn't be my cup of tea (for all the Brits here)

I couldn't have been more wrong

So far I've listened to Yeezus and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West and LONG.LIVE.ASAP by ASAP Rocky but I've been really enjoying them and want to get more

I'm planning on listening to Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z and Kanye's earlier works but I want to know what other recommendations you guys have and what songs you liked

My new motto everywhere

Ahhh welcome to where the cool kids hang out

I love hip hop...for a white Australian girl it was a very acquired taste (though they do say that it's mostly white guys who like hip hop)

It's only now that I really apreciate it for what it is without having to fall back on "it's not all crap" to appease people who wouldn't like it in the first place...the lighthearted stuff, the gangsta stuff, the political stuff is all part of the wonderful world of hip hop

Even if you don't usually reddit is check out /r/hiphopheads

On phone so linking is a pain..some of my favourites new and old

ATliens- outkast

Monnie in the middle- by uhh Monnie Somone?

Dirty Gold- Angel Hazes debut album

Frreaks and geeks- childish gamblino

Take a walk- master ace

Zero dark thirty- Aesop rock

The slim shady LP

Kid Cudi- though he's gone from rap into general weirdness, weather or not this is a good thing is subjective

How do you feel about the possibility on getting into some old 90's gangsta rap? That's really where my taste begins and ends as far as hip-hop is concerned, and I could drop quite a few non-mainstream-recognised acts if you're open to it. I know most people automatically deride gangsta rap from the get go, so I dunno.

Yeah, it's all right. I usually prefer the older stuff, though (all are NSFW, the middle one extraordinarily so):

I love the story in 'Lose Yourself' by Eminem. Songs with a story are usually more interesting and memorable to me.

also Lose yourself I think was a gateway song for many kids at the time, it was I remember the first rap song I ever liked (I was about 10 or 11 at the time)

You're a brit? There's actually quite a healthy hip hop scene in the UK.
I'd recommend Akala.

My favourite hip hop is the Old School stuff though, stuff like.....

Styles of Beyond (the group doesn't exist anymore but their music does):

KRS One (he's mostly known for his 90's stuff which is really good but he's making music all the time and I think his post-2000 stuff is better, he's definitely one of the smartest rappers out there so if you want intelligent rap, check him out):

Brother Ali:

Atmosphere:

Rhymester (don't know much about Japanese rap but these guys are great):

If you want to catch up on some of the classics, I suggest:
Rakim
Nas
Naughty by Nature
Public Enemy
Beastie Boys
De La Soul
RUN DMC
Busta Rhymes
Wu-Tang Clan
Cypress Hill

Heard of The Brotherhood? Old Hip hop group from the UK.

Ah, memories...

Other than that most of my suggestions have been put up already. Jeru The Damaja's worth checking out, at least up to the early 00's.

Those are some great albums to start with, for sure! A good recommendation if you liked the kind of industrial-ish style of Yeezus is:

Also, a rapper I've been getting super into recently is:

And one I've loved for ages. He's inconsistent but when he's good (mainly on his first two albums) he's great:

Snip La Snip/quote] Depends on your taste, if you're a nerdy guy you'll like Nerdcore artist like Mc Frontalot. Hip Hop is so deep man, much more than Kanye, and you can dig deeper!

I'm not sure why being a white kid would somehow translate into not being able to enjoy hip hop, or any kind of music. As far as I know, there is no genetic component to it.

I really like Mestizo.
Mainly due to the turntablism (well, scratching) and swing borrowings. It claims it's electro swing but I'd disagree, personally.

Ain't nobody posted anything from Illmatic yet. I am extremely disappoint in ALL of you. I need to rectify this situation as fast as possible.

EDIT: Also, more Wu-tang.

Beastie Boys, and De La Soul are great 'classics'

Also, I solidly reccomend a bloke called Nujabes.

He dips into jazz, trip-hop and japanese style stuff and's pretty incredible.

I'll check him out. I love trip-hop and any jazz influenced hip hop. Been listening to this record by blue and green for the last few days.

Then there's Aussie hip hop. May I direct your attention to Seth Sentry, Horrorshow, The Herd (and any of the Herd's member's solo work, particularly that of Urthboy) and my new favourite thing at the moment: Daily Meds.

Hilltop Hoods and Bliss N Eso are our current mainstream mainstays, so check them out, but they're a bit... clean. Probably not the best adjective, but there you go. My point is, do anything but stop at the festival headliners.
