Has anyone read 'Y - The last man'? It's a kind of fascinating take on what the world would be like if every organism that carried the XY chromosone was wiped off the face of the earth.

I was wondering how many posts I would read before I found someone mentioning this.

I don't see this catching on.

Sperm donation is far easier than using stem cells (you don't need a degree in biology to generate natural sperm, do you?) - and therefore, presumably, is cheaper.

It'll cost thousands to order a batch of artificial sperm, money most people simply don't have - and I doubt there'd be any significant difference in reliability between artificial and natural sperm.

The word "sperm" has now lost all meaning.

Everyone is taking this for a lot more than it really is. Being able to turn an embryo into a sperm is utterly useless in a clinical setting. When we can turn adult stem cells into sperm, then you have something useful. So far, we can't really turn adult stem cells into anything.

As for "what would a baby from artificial sperm looks like", it would look like a normal baby. That's the POINT. You take the embryo and make a fully functional NORMAL sperm.

...Oddly enough, no.

I have to say, though, that even if this did manage to work out (which, as many who have posted have already stated, won't go down well) in my lifetime, it's not like I'd just drop my man and be like, 'Woo-hoo, I can do this myself now!' Seriously, "toys" aren't nearly as good as the real thing... (At least, not the real thing I'm engaged to.)

But maybe I'm the only one looking at this from a non-reproduction point of view.
