This is both wrong, and some what nice. At least the guy will have roof over his head, and 3 meals a day the next 15 years :)

So I guess it's kind of a good thing? But the CEO..... 3 billion dollars.... what the hell did he do with all that money? o_O

If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was "suspected drug profits" and seized by the government for the express purpose of going to law enforcement. I'm not going to go into how wrong our seizure laws in the USA are, but they're not there to protect your freedom.

How do you guys feel about this? Any idea of what we can do to make this shit better?
I feel that I need more information to accurately draw a conclusion. I mean there are three strikes laws all across the country, I doubt the man actually turned himself in over guilt. Not to mention that the 40 months was also probably a bargain deal that had many other stipulations, jail time isn't the only punishment that can be doled out in a court...

Ah who the hell am I kidding, this is the internet I don't want rational thought and clear information on a subject. I want to jump to some fucking conclusions.

BURN THE MAN WITH FIRE AND ACID FOR THE MAN IS EVIL!!!!!

Couldn't you argue that the homeless man is possably better off in Prison? Free food, a place to sleep, showers, water etc. I give him props for feeling bad and turning himself in. I like that bit.

America..... this is just more proof that the justice system is flawed beyond repair. Short of completely tearing it down to nothing and starting again.

This may not be as cruel as people are thinking.

He is going to prison yes but it may be possible that the judge sent him there on such a sentance on sympathy.

I had a Local Magistrate as a Teacher in college he stated once how he had a hearing where a homeless man would commit a minor crime every Christmas and he would sent him to prison over the Christmas holiday, Why do this? The man was committing the crime because he wanted to go to prison where he had shelter and food available and the Magistrate obliged him so he didn't starve over Christmas.

It may be a similar circumstance he may be going to prison but for 15 years he is going to have clean clothes, shelter, food and medical care that he wouldn't have living on the street.

There are two sides to every story and sometimes sending a man to prison is a mercy that looks like a curse.
this is highly possible, if i was ever in a situation where i was THAT DOWN on my luck (granted i would never make myself in that position) i would easily commit minor crimes as such to be in prison for the benefits of it.

honestly when the care and comfort of prison is more comforting than the bums out on the road..i do believe something is kind of wrong there..
My dad works in law enforcement. He used to tell me all kind of stories of people doing this. Rob a bank, hold someone at gunpoint, whatever; and either just sit down in the lobby and wait or turn yourself in in a few days. Prison as a retirement plan. Hell, there's even a term vrooks use to sum of the care you get: "Three hots and a cot" (3 hot meals and a bed).

That being said, it doesnt sound like that is the case here.

I'm going with 'it's fake'.

In fact the only information I can find online points to a COMPLETELY made up story.

http://www.shreveportla.gov/dept/Police/2007/052507.bank%20robber%20turns%20himself%20in.htm

The robbery in question has nothing to do with this prisoner or anything. No I can't verify it either. But everything I can find points to fake. And nothing I can find goes with the original story. It looks like this blogger created this story and used the info of Roy Brown.
"Roy Brown Homless" [http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Roy+Brown+Homeless]

Homeless man gets 15 years for stealing $100 [http://tinyurl.com/3rlcjeh]

It happened enough for it to make it onto several news sites.
Everything those turn up just seems to be a reposting of this image, reddit, forums, fb groups that provide no information, etc. And because you decided to say "Just Google it" in the most asshole way possible: Protip: Google has a 'News' tab you can click on for only News sources! "Was that so Hard?" indeed.

Honestly reading the story sounds like the dude has no place to go. Prison may be better. Plus he threatened a bank teller. But 15 years in prison is 15 years where he gets to not worry about where he eat/sleep. He might be able to make it good thing. I dunno that's how I'm spinning it.

The other guy deserves a harsher sentence for sure. All these embezzlement people and corruption in DC get off way too easy.

Wow. Thats fucked up. Ok the CEo only got 3 and a bit years but the poor homeless dude. 15? thats insane. He robbed the bank, took only enough to feed himself instead of the entire lot, then handed himself in, on top of that he pleaded guilty! He should have got a suspended sentence or something.

Someone said he was a "repeat offender?" have you ever heard of a repeat offender taking only 1 bill when a stack was offered then turned himself in the next day? get out of it. The justice system is screwed up man.

Oh to the guy above me: People get raped in jail. Free food and a bed for some rape? No thanks. Plus theres no girls in a Male jail so no giggidy for 15 years either. (except with the other inmates but yeah....)

Different courts, different judges, different people issuing sentences.

Don't try to blame the guy condemning the homeless man because some other asshole was too lenient on a CEO. Blame him because he issued an overly harsh sentence for petty theft.
I think it stops becoming petty theft and goes to unarmed robbery/bank robbery as soon as you take more than a certain amount (not sure what that amount is, though).

Then again (someone probably mentioned this but there are a lot of comments to look through) he has no place to stay and is hungry.

Prison could help him. A place to stay, food. Yes it sucks that he's in there for 15 years but at least he won't be starving.

I just hope no harm comes to him.

They were different circumstances. Plus, didn't the homeless guy do it solely to go to jail for free shelter, clothes, and food?

So, if I embezzled $1 million while another guy robbed 4 people at gunpoint for a total of $1000, I would get more jail time?

The circumstances matter. Not just how much money is involved.
Yes, yes you would. That is of course only if the armed robbery didn't have any casualties apart from some nightmares for the victims.
I'm thinking long term here, the armed robbery is wrong but doesnt have any long time effects. The embezzlement of 1 million might cause people to loose their jobs or even make a company go bankrupt.

I all fairness though the amount of jail time would be roughly the same.
You: Large amount of money = +15 years. No casualties = -5 years.
Robber: Small amount of money = +3 years. Illegal firearm and threatening with death = +12 years.
No casualties = -5 years
Also, the robber probably did it out of need (sick mother/jobless/hungry). You would do it out of greed.
Spoken like a man who's never been held at gun point.

I'd be willing to bet repeat offender. Most times you see a sentence like this it's for a '3 strikes' rule.
This, its the only logical explanation, there is no way that he would get that much time for robbing a bank. People like to think things like this are just a screwed up legal system but for the most part there is at least an ounce of reason behind it.

I'm cool with the homeless man's sentence, but the rich guy should have gotten a messy execution after seizure of all his assets by the state. I say if they play high stakes theft, make the stakes high for being caught.

Technically, It can be considered assault. Why? Because he pretended to have a gun under his shirt. That invokes the same fear as a real gun, the same fear of death. That is why he got 15 years.

Now, I agree that the CEO got off light. It should have been 7-10 years, but the law is the law.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ that.

Threatening to kill someone for their money is considered worse than taking their money behind their back. The amount of money was probably the least significant factor about that case.
