Why is it that people suffer from homophobia? As part of the gay community I've had to deal with the usual verbal/physical assault based around the person/s being homophobic. I've always wondered what exactly it is that causes people to react the way they do around/with gays/bisexuals/etc..

And generally speaking, men tend to be more homophobic than women; why is that? And why doe people in general see lesbians as okay but male gays as freaks of nature? The first thing that comes to mind would probably be the whole 'lesbian acts being a turn-on' thing. But it still doesn't make much sense.

As a warning, if you are homophobic and you aren't going to contribute to this thread positively, don't contribute at all. We don't need flaming going on here.
Thats so true a girl i use to be friends with said "male gays are just wrong but its ok if you a woman". So after telling her that shes a arrogent fucktwat i just went into a rage!
I dont see the differnce? I dont care what sex you are be with the person you want to be with its your choice?

Ye and most men are homophobic and refuse to watch brokeack mountain? why? its a beutiful film! plus the sex scene itself is hilerious how do they manege that in that tiny tent?

lol good post you got me all riled up lol

I would naturally assume it stems from one or both of two things:

Religion: As sex is seen only for spreading your seed and furthering the human population, a gay couple would be seen as waisting your god given right/duty to further the human race. People frown upon this, and somehow think that hating them will make them turn straight.
(Note: This is not all religions, but there are a fair few like this)

Biological: Its part of the human genetic structure to have sex with the opposite gender to further create and multiply. If people aren't doing what is considered as 'normal' (genetically speaking of course), then the get scared and don't know how to react, which usually leads to frustration and so forth. This may be under dispute, as seen by the 'Nature vs. Nurture' thread floating around.

I myself am not a homophobic, this is just the reason I believe some people are homophobic.
dolphins are bi sexual arent they?mind you,I think there was a dolphin outcast for being gay,so maybe its natural(not homophobic, just a thought and possibly a misinformed one at that)

I thought that it was the male desire to impregnate other women, and homophobes think that "Gays" are going against their primal instinct, hence the insults to your community.

On the why are lesbians more accepted then there male counterparts, I once read the following:

In our society, strong, male behavior is encouraged and accepted (especially by males).
Gay women are perceived as stronger and therefor easier accepted.
Homosexuality in men on the other hand is often seen as a sign of weakness and is frowned upon.

This has been bothering me for quite a while now. It's just another form of sexism.

edit: and on the nature thing, there are hundreds of animal species in which homosexuality has been observed. Ranging from ducks to dolphins to chimps. Apparently 10% of all ducks are gay.

If you're truly comfortable with who you are who cares if someone else is gay?
I would put this quote, in golden letters, and make kids learn it at school. It doesn't have to relate to homophoby, but to anything you do, or you are afraid of, or you dont tolerate.

(yes in some country's they think black people are scary and all)

I always believed homophobia doesnt mean to hate gay people, but being extremely uncomfortable with intimacy towards people of your own gender. Homophobiacs avoid public dressing rooms and shared showers at the gym for example, because their uncomfortable with being naked among people of their gender. I suppose its based on self esteem, or possible denial of any homosexual feelings, but it happens alot.

I really dont mind homosexuals. And I wont discriminate someone based on their sexual orientation. I just expect people to not make such a fuss about it, including homosexuals themselves. I believe mutual acceptance comes from understanding, so if a homo is open about and willing to share his thoughts on the matter, people are much more likely to accept the way he is.

For example, I had a really good conversation with a bisexual guy once. He explained that he simply didnt fall in love specifically men or women, he falls in love with PEOPLE. After he explained that, I can do nothing but respect this guy.

They don't understand it, nor do they wish to, for whatever reason. So being antagonistic is the logical [?] option..ugh

well it's a couple things

1. being raised that way, much like racism, parents pass on their hate to the next generation or they are simply taught that by someone else

2. they are actually gay themselves and in denial. there is a bunch of guys who are so afraid that they are gay they are homophobic. they did a study a while ago where they focused a thermal camera on a person's crotch while they showed them erotic imagery, both straight and homosexual. for most they got the reaction they expected, however with the severely homophobic males, they found out that they were turned on by gay male imagery

Because homosexuals don't contribute to reproduction. It's an animal instinct. If we were animals still living in the wild we would shun such a creature as it leaves the rest of the species at a disadvantage in regards to population and evolution.

Of course at this point in society most people can suppress this instinct.

I think it's society pushing the ''be macho'' thing on guys. Anything remotely un-macho is a threat to them.

Mostly the problems are misunderstandings by stubborn people not willing to progress. We need to do some real changes to quote Biggie and Tupac.

But I have been in the same room with some obnoxious ones before, and it got annoying with the constant reminder that they like men. So there is something at fault at both sides.

I'm not very homophobic, but I am slightly put off by really queeny guys that are obviously trying to act that way. At Comic-Con waaaayyyyy back in 2001 in the Spider-Man panel, I was sitting in front of a guy that kept LOUDY talking about what he wanted to do to Tobey Maguire. Just a little obnoxious.
That's hating obnoxious people, not gay people.
